Ooc: yes, everyone has stayed within range to back then up if needed. Close enough to spring and attack or move into. rangered attack. And they will need help.
Th gnoll is completely taken by surprise and in his panic fumbles around trying to grab for his spear knocking it over.
Those where creeping up can make ranged attacks still at surprise with advantage, running up into melee will loose advantage
Wormsquinrts attack somehow managed to hit a piece of bone still attached to the hide armor and gives a glancing blow while simultaneously an arrow sinks into into shoulder. It's taken 10dmg
ooc: You can get into normal range. Everyone was following close enough behind to be prepared for attacks. It's pretty much right as everyone see's that Wormsquirts blade didn't really bite, and saw the arrow just hit a shoulder, it was a universal "Oh shit moment" and everyone sprang to action
Zarbof takes aim with his crossbow, and lets a bolt fly.
Attack: 12 Damage: 9
He then slings the crossbow onto his back, and advances, pulling out his battleaxe and shield as he goes (OOC: Is that possible? I know drawing a weapon is counted for free as part of your attack action, but not sure how putting a weapon away and drawing another works? I guess I'm effectively just attempting to stow the crossbow as part of either my movement or a bonus action, and drawing the battleaxe would happen if/whenI attack with it in the next round?).
Zarbof your bolt goes wide and clatters harmlessly off the boulder
ooc: you would use your bonus action to put your crossbow away and draw your weapon in the beginning of the next round. The ruling I've always used is that you can drop a weapon and draw a new one in the same round, but not put one away and draw a new one. For instance if you had you're crossbow out and something charged you, you could drop your crossbow and draw your axe, but you wouldn't have time to sling the crossbow over your shoulder and draw your axe (excepting a skill or feat that would allow this) Does that make sense?
ooc: Zarbof messaged me some good questions about Surprise and I feel I should clarify here. There isn't technically a "Surprise round" everything would usually take place in a combat round. Being "Surprised" is a condition. Creatures can be surprised in combat at different times and such. I just didn't want everyone to roll initiative and then have everyone say they're holding they're attacks for Wormsquirt and Thorum, etc. So since it's just the one gnoll I'm bending the rules a bit to try and streamline the round.
Belaluin creeps up from behind trying to be stealth. He feels a wild impulse of danger when approaching the cave. As if his arcana itself whispers about it. He helps Mysti with the body and looks to understand what's happening and what the better way to approach the gnolls would be:
Stealth: 11
Perception: 20
He looks around for any kind of water source around.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Now that we're this close, could someone sneaky see if you could get a glance in without being seen, maybe get a count on their numbers? And whilst we're here, maybe a couple of us could check for tripwires, or any kind of rudimentary alarm system?"
I'll make a perception check myself looking for tripwires, traps or alarms: 12
Belialuin, you creep very stealthily to a spot near the back trail leading into the crag area and can find a position where you can see into the camp somewhat.
There are 2 gnolls in a heated argument. One is slightly bigger than the other and carrying shortswords, the other looks like it's wearing better armor than the rest of the gnolls you've seen and he is gesturing furiously towards the spear he's holding amidst much snapping and growling. They are surrounded by a larger group of gnolls that seem somewhat divided. Half behind the sword wielding gnoll and half behind the armored gnoll.
OOC: We're still able to see this happen, right? We can see them attack?

Ha, wow.. Indeed you do come to the rescue, just barely ;)
