Rend is going to look up at the dragon, preparing to strike. "I have already pledged my allegiance to another dragon, one much more powerfull than you!" the kobold would say running towards the dragon as he lets out a savage growl before lunging through the air and attempting to stab at the large red dragon.
Attack: 30 Damage: 15
"You are a couple days to late friend! I had always hoped to serve a dragon, but Tessa is much more beautiful than you!" Rend would growl as he plunges his spear forward a second time.
I was thinking that Hal was within 5ft of the dragon so I rolled with advantage because of my kobold pack tactics... but if he wasn't that close you can take whichever was the first roll or I can re-roll. (without advantage the first attack would be a 22 and the second would be 12 to hit.
OOC: Ahh, ok, yeah. The dragon was still up the cliff so you had to make your way up to it. By this time you'd made your way mostly around so it's not like he's 60' up. I probably should have explained better. It's like the small edge of a cliff where it starts to slope back and there's some shrubs and small trees growing it. Something like this from the dragons point of view with you guys down at the end of the rock wall looking section. So you can easily get up there but it would put you out of tactics. I'll just use the first of the rolls.
Klee takes J'Anna's advice and gathers the mounts before they get too skittish and runs them back down the trail out of danger.
ooc: I think I'm going to have to whiteboard this encounter. For everyone's reference. Especially for breath weapon area. Right now with Rend in melee but everyone else still together he can position himself to start the cone on Rend and extend it to the rest of the party, but if he gets his breath back it will be good to know where everyone is.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The dragon takes a few steps back to position itself properly using it's bulk to push any trees in it's way and releases a blast of fire starting at Rend and extending out toward the rest of the party.
DC17 DEX save for half damage. Rend you'll be taking half anyway from resistance correct? and saving for 1/4?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
J'Anna dex save: 13
Failing the save J'Anna is caught in the midst of the flame and burned for 60 damage.
OOC: Can I use my War Caster feat to react to the breath weapon and cast a 1 action spell on the dragon? and if yes do I still get my turn then on my initiative? I’m not 100% sure how it works yet I took it so I could still while cast holding sword and shield
Rend will raise his shield and brace himself as the flames wash over him! (Rend dex save!!!! 15)

You have advantage on DEX saving throws against effects that you can see while not blinded, deafened, or incapacitated.
Shield Master
You use shields not just for protection but also for offense. You gain the following benefits while you are wielding a shield:
If you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to try to shove a creature within 5 feet of you with your shield.
If you aren't incapacitated, you can add your shield's AC bonus to any Dexterity saving throw you make against a spell or other harmful effect that targets only you.
If you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you can use your reaction to take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, interposing your shield between yourself and the source of the effect.
Shield Master Shove: 1 Bonus Action
Shield Master Evasion: 1 Reaction
The kobold tries to get his shield up in time but the flames wrap around it and engulf the kobold, badly singing his bearskin cloak as the kobold takes 30 damage. (I was devastated to read that i couldn't add an additional +4 to the dex saving throw because it didn't target only me lol!)

(Crap forgot to say I moved back after getting in close to cast blight.... Just a suggestion but we need a map for combat so we can at least have a vague idea of what is where since it makes it hard to keep my character away from the dragon...)
Halizthan Dex Save: 7
(And Halizthan is out of here now that he is down to 2 up.)
Ooc. Yup map is coming. My girl is working from home today so when she's off the table I'll have that ready for next round. Rend. Ok totally didn't know that about the shield either. Thanks for keeping honest! JAnna the dragon hasn't done anything to provoke an opportunity attack. It basically just sidestepped so Rend was in front of it. But in general you could cast as a reaction to an opportunity, instead of weapon attack, if you choose and it has no bearing on your normal turn. So your initiative would be the same and normal.
Edit. No bearing in terms of actions. It would still burn the spell slot. It's not a total free bee :p
OOC: ok so using the war caster ability is basically the same as using the ready action and setting a trigger, only difference is normally it's just a weapon attack but with warcaster its can be a spell attack?
In all honesty that part of war caster seems pretty usless, for a pally anyhow that can smite on a melee hit, but no matter the real reason I took it so there are no problems casting with sword and shield out.
Yup. And yeah. There's definitely some debate about how useful it is. Personally I think casting with both hands full is a definite advantage but some folks feel it's a little weak compared to other feats
(Yeah it sucks since I had no way to get out of the way since it is hard to place the dragon. Also I never said I wanted to get off my horse but it was kind of taken out from under me. My plan was to use it to ride around on in order to keep both in and out of range with spells....)

You're chill touch unfortunately does not hit.
Rend you are able to find a way up to him and attack
(I'm confused about the advantage on attack rolls though?)

So the first attack does hit, but the second misses.
With the failed save he's suffered 49 DMG

(Yeah Halizthan is staying as far back as he can while still being in range to hit with his spells...)
(I am more than happy to soak up hits and damage but am hoping someone else gets close so I can use my pack tactics :D )

Halizthan is at 2
