Jorin greets Sandis with a nod saying, "Jorin Maul, I lived in the pig as well..." he pauses for a moment, his eyes shifting up as if deep in thought, "...high on the hog you might say!" and then chuckles at his own joke before pointing to Drusk and adding, "He and I, along with Hildi here, were out for sah-kay at the Dashing Satyr. Have you had sah-kay? It is a drink..."
"Drusk. Stayed three nights ago at the FP, checked out at that time. Traveling with Hildigrim. Planned on checking in again, before hearing it burned down."

"Well," she says, after looking and noting Jorin and Drusk on her papers. "Then the three of you are welcome to stop at the Palace if you have needs. Though," she glances up. "They will be closed this time of night. Good luck," she signs a paper and, turning, hands the lot back to the watchman as she walks off.
He shrugs at you. "Welcome home, I suppose."

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
The Watch waves you onward, and you enter Waterdeep. It is late, but there are still some people about. The High Road, 120' wide at its widest, stretches south ahead of you. Lamps illuminate the snowy night, and carriages are still operating along the road. The High Road is divided by a raised stone sidewalk in the middle, and there are wide sidewalks on either side.
As you walk south, you first walk through the North Ward, pretty posh, well policed, and comfortable. The Watch has a notable presence here, especially on the high Road itself. To your right (west) at each crossroads you can make out the even wealthier district of the Sea Ward, where much of the nobility lives.
Light snow has begun again, obscuring your vision slightly.
About twenty minutes into your walk, as you are approaching the Market on your right (west), the city has gotten much quieter. It is night, and though you have seen occasional citizens hurrying along, mostly it's been a Watch patrol here, or one of the Lamplighters checking on their charges. Now you hear behind you horses and a carriage. You turn to see, and an ornate enclosed carriage thunders by, gilded in gold, two horses, with a driver up top. As it roars past, not slowing in the intersection, you see inside one of the Masked Lords, apparent because of the flat black mask they wear. The person's eyes meet yours, and note your group, and then the carriage is past, clattering off into the snow, southward.
You are still about twenty minutes from the Yawning Portal.

Waterdeep is ruled by the Open Lord, meaning everyone knows who she is, Laeral Silverhand, and the Masked Lords. There are maybe nine of them, and nobody knows who they are. When they appear in public as Masked Lords, they are always dressed in black with their black masks. They can be seen most often at the Palace, sitting in judgment with the Open Lord over important matters. They do not speak, in those circumstances, instead communicating through the Open Lord.
There are more than a few rumors about who is a Masked Lord. Pick someone, and an argument could be made that they could be a Masked Lord. Durnan, proprietor of the Yawning Portal, is a popular guess, among many others.

"One of the Masked Lords!" Hildigrim says excitedly as the carriage rides by. "I wonder about his destination?" The halfling is silent for a few seconds, watching the carriage continue down the snow-littered street. "My father thinks Regalis Windlesail is one of them," he says casually. "He owns the biggest shipbuilding yard, and he's lived in Waterdeep since before the Spellplague — not in the Dock Ward, of course; his home is in the Sea Ward — but he is looked at as a kind of local magistrate around the docks, even though he doesn't have any official power. He's been a big supporter of my family's business over the years, which has been helpful during slumps in the economy." After another half a minute of silence: "Personally, I think there's some truth behind the rumor that Santar Belrune is one. I know he's relatively new to Waterdeep, but since the assassination of so many Masked Lords last year, it makes sense that someone like Belrune, who has so quickly become an individual of power, would be a good one to have by the Open Lord's side." He looks around to the others, especially Pascal, who's been in Waterdeep a while. "Have you any suspicions?"

"Xanathar?" Hildigrim asks. He thinks for a moment. "Usually, the Masked Lords are Waterdhavians seen out in the open every day when not masked. If Xanathar is in fact a drow from the underdark, as Semmy suggested, I don't see how that could happen. They would be watched too carefully, I think." He puts a finger to his chin. "However, if this Xanathar is in fact one of the usual races — human, elf ... even halfling — they certainly could be one of the Masked Lords." He gives Pascal a satisfied nod.
As you move on south from the Market, the Wards have changed. On your left, the North Ward gives way to the Trades Ward, with many shops and smaller guilds, all shuttered this late. Past the buildings at the cross streets you can just see the tops of the trees in the City of the Dead. On your right, the Castle Ward begins its sprawl, though most of the important buildings (the Palace, Blackstaff Tower, the Halls of Justice, etc.) are far to the west and out of sight.
The High Road continues southward, until it meets Waterdeep Way and turns left into the Trades Ward, to dogleg around Mount Waterdeep and the Castle. That's how you would have gone to get to the Fiddly Pig. Waterdeep Castle looms above you to the right, and Mount Waterdeep behind it.
Pascal's Baker's Guild is to the right, along Waterdeep Way a few blocks and north on the Street of the Sword.
The Yawning Portal is best reached by going straight ahead, onto the much smaller Snail Street, another ten minutes to Soothsayer's Way and then some side streets.
It is our equivalent of about 10 pm. At these latitudes, and in winter, it is well dark.
Drusk casts Light, then drapes a cloth over it to make the lighting dimmer (but still bright enough to walk).
Following the others, since they are the residents. Up to them if the group should take a direct route to the Tired Hole, or a longer path on wider roads. (Have there been any troubles on the "much smaller Snail St"? I think Bruce Wayne's parents decided to take a short cut in an alley.)

Sorry, the night is dark, but Waterdeep, especially in the North, Trades, and Castle Wards is well lit by regular streetlamps. Again, imagine Victorian London, complete with lamplighters and Bobbys. The streetlamps along the major thoroughfares and in the wealthier districts are light by Continual Flame spells, in other places they are oil and wick, or candles, maintained by the youngsters of the Guild of Chandlers and Lamplighters.
The Yawning Portal is in the Castle Ward, and close to the Castle itself, so there is little danger there, even at night, as it is well patrolled by the City Watch. Were you in the Dock Ward, or the Field Ward (the lawless section you passed through between the Guard and the Watch gates, to get to the city proper) it would be a different story.

OOC: As the Dock Ward is described as a "riotous, nigh-perpetual brawl that covers entire acres, interrupted only by small buildings, intermittent trade businesses, an errant dog or two, and a few brave watchguards who manage to keep the chaos from spreading beyond the docks," I think Hildigrim is used to keeping an eye out for danger and isn't worried about the streets they're currently navigating. The faster the better!
Jorin walks through the city streets with an ease and level of comfort that would be surprising to his kin. When he first arrived in Waterdeep, that was a different story, not afraid per se, but he always walked with ever vigilant eyes and hands near his axes. Now though, after 2 years of being in the city, he has gotten more used to it and, while still keeping his eyes peeled, he walks with a more easy manner.
Pascal nods, “That’s right. Mutual friends of an old friend of mine. Helped to get her house in order after she moved in.”
