Before departing Conway thinks backs to the stories he heard growing up. This sword "Talon" was once carrier by Sir Aldith who died fighting off the orcs that attacked through the hidden caverns below his manor. The blade was thought to have been lost to history but it appears Gilga has found it.
You begin to head in the direction that Iarno fled. You pass through the Secret Door and then through the Crypts. You then recall the Cell block and you stop by there.
The woman and her children have now calmed down as no further Redbrands have arrived to watch over them. They look up to you hopefully.
Mirna the mother says, "You're back! Did you find the key?"
“Good to know Conway” as Fawn snatches back the sword and rolls her eyes. She then goes to the cell door to the woman. “Yes ma’am. Halben got the keys to let you and your children out. We must make haste as we do not know if or when more of the redbrands will return.”
Halben unlocks the cell and the family hugs tightly grateful that they are appear to be making it out of here alive.
You all proceed to the formal exit where the Cistern was. When you arrive, you see a wet bag next to the cistern flat on the ground. Two empty flasks lay broken on the stone floor as well as the clothing Iarno Albrek was wearing. It appears that Iarno had hidden a type of bug-out bag in the cistern for emergency situations. He is no where in sight.
As you peak out the main door of Tresandor Manor, you see the familiar town of Phandalin. If you wish to do anything before you leave you may do it now.
The Dendrar family shrieks in excitement as they see daylight although the sun is starting to lower now as you have been in the Hideout for the better part of the day.
The mother Mirna Dendrar turns to you with tears in her eyes, "I wish I had something to give you but unfortunately I have nothing. However, as you all seem to be the adventuring type I can tell you where a valuable family heirloom may be hidden. When I was a young girl, my family and I fled from the town of Thundertree after undead overran the place. My family had an herb and alchemy shop, inside was a case containing an emerald necklace that was hidden beneath a section of storage shelves. I never dated to return and retrieve it. The shop was in the southeast part of Thundertree. Thank you so much again. I hope you find the heirloom and it brings you great joy or fortune."
With that the Dendrar family begins to walk to town clutching each others hands as they go.
DM Notes:
Well done! You may now all add 201 Experience Points to your Character sheets. This should put you all at level 3! This is really when your class begins to take shape so be sure to really look at the different options you are presented.
Now... Where do you go next? As a recap, here are a few options although you may feel free to get creative:
Head to the woods and rest for the night.
Head back to the Stonehill Inn to rent rooms and rest
Go back to the Townmaster's Hall as Sildar tasked you with finding Iarno Albrek
Go to Thundertree to find Mirna's Heirloom
Go investigate the Old Owl Well as tasked by Daran Edermath
Continue to investigate to find the Cragmaw Castle to free Gundren
Go sell/buy goods(Barthen's Provisions sells general adventuring goods/Lionshield Coster sells weapons and armor)
I agree” Says Fawn, “Let’s go to the woods for a short rest, split the loot, and Halben can study the staff while I study the sword. That way if trouble arises in town we are prepared.”
"I agree, although I may want to get a long rest instead of a short rest. I keep hearing whispers of people's thoughts since Gilga invaded our minds. I believe if I focus hard enough I can Detect Thoughts now."
You all make your way to the forest where you sit down for one hour. Those of you who wish to use your hit dice, please roll for them below. Also, when using your short rest hit dice, please make sure to tick it off as you are only allowed so many before you must take a long rest.
As you rest, Halben takes the Staff of Defense and concentrates on the magical power of the staff. He learns that the staff is the following:
This slender, hollow staff is made of glass yet is as strong as oak. It weighs 3 pounds. You must be attuned to the staff to gain its benefits and cast its spells.
While holding the staff, you have a +1 bonus to your Armor Class.
The staff has 10 charges, which are used to fuel the spells within it. With the staff in hand, you can use your action to cast one of the following spells from the staff if the spell is on your class’s spell list:mage armor (1 charge) or shield(2 charges). No components are required.
The staff regains 1d6 + 4 expended charges each day at dawn. If you expend the staff’s last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff shatters and is destroyed.
Fawn then takes her new Longsword into her hands. She swings the blade and becomes an expert on it's weight and it's magical essence. She learns the blade is not just a longsword but Talon is a Longsword, +1 which means that Fawn will have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls mage with this weapon. Since the blade is magic it will also allow her to harm some enemies where a normal blade would not. The Longsword is a Versatile weapon which means Fawn will be able to either use the Longsword one handed or two handed. One handed would allow her to also open doors, grapple enemies, or carry torches while also wielding and attacking. However, if she decided to attack two handed she could do so which would do more damage. Fawn cannot dual wield this Longsword and another blade currently.
You are both now attuned to your new weapons. Please be sure to add them to your inventory, equip, and attune them. Congratulations!
”Hold your items Fawn. If anyone needs something let her know but I honestly think we should take these items back to town and turn them to liquid and purchase some quality items. I’m sure we will be fine going back” Conway says as he gets to his feet.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
DM ROLLS:

You all settle in for the evening. You could not have asked for a more peaceful night. The moon and stars are in full visibility with not a cloud in the sky. The insects of the night sing their songs as you rest around the campfire reflecting on the events that have taken place so far.
Cypress first spends some time with the mysterious spell scroll you found. After studying it you find that it is a Scroll of Augurythat could be used by a Cleric. As you have no Clerics in your party at this time you determine that it would be best to sell or trade this item if you can find a buyer.
All of your watches go without cause for concern. The only time Conway became tense was when his keen eyes picked up something moving in the night. Upon further inspection it was just an O'Possum checking out the fire.
You awaken the next morning feeling refreshed as your Long Rest has completed. There is a very light fog and morning dew on the ground. The fire is now but embers as it's heat is replaced by the morning Sun. Now with a clear mind and healthy body, you begin to discuss among yourselves.
DM Notes: Now for a bit of Roleplay Immersion. I would like for each person to share their thoughts about something that has transpired so far. It doesn't matter what and also share what they feel should be the next step of action. It is Fawn's turn in decision making so it will ultimately be up to her but everyone needs to share their opinion.
Fawn awakens from her peaceful slumber, “I don’t know about you fellas but being under the stars and in the dirt really helped recharge and align my chakras” she says as she stretches. “What did you make of that staff Halben?” As she looks in his directions. “I’m assuming the watches were uneventful?” She says to the other two comrades “I supposed it’s time to head back to town. Maybe go get this loot melted down and turned to coin first and while we’re there get some supplies. Then I reckon we need to let Sildar know about his colleague” she addresses the group “what do you boys think?” With one hand on her hip and the other arm held in a questioning manner.
Halben twirls the staff around a bit and says to Fawn "I feel like I am finally able to use this staff correctly. The defensive spells in this staff should help quite a lot. I do feel that whole encounter with the red brands has finally allowed me to move on from my past dealings with this town. I agree that we should try to sell as much as we can an try to buy items for our next journey. How do you feel about your new sword Fawn?" Halben asks
Cypress stumbles to his feet, “Do you guys have to be so loud in the mornings?!” He asks in a disgruntled tone. “That scroll I studied last night doesn’t seem to be much benefit for any of us, I think we should find a buyer for it in town. I feel that this adventure has strengthened my Druidic powers, I’ve come to realize I belong in the moon Druid circle, I believe this will strengthen my shapeshifting capacity” he then turns to Conway, “I feel as though we may have met before this adventure, what is your last name Conway?”
Sleeping off away from the others Conway wakes from sleep, eyes wide open, covered in sweat, and hears the voice of the demon god holder ringing in his ears. He feels a searing in his left hand and smell of freshly burning meat. He winces in pain and looks at his hand and there rests a tome. Knowing this day would come he quickly tosses the book up in the air and right before it hits the ground he snaps his fingers and the book vanishes.
Conway gets to his feet and walks over the small mounding hill and reaches the others. He is greeted as Fawn begins speaking about getting the items sold and gearing up for the next slot of the adventure.
His stomach begins to rumble and he knows he hasn’t eaten since the day prior but hears Cypress’ question about his last name. “I don’t have a last name anymore. It was taken from me but that is a story for another time. I say we go back to town and grab some food and get ourselves situated” Conway says.
”I do believe we should inform Sildar as soon as possible of our findings. I am almost regretting letting Glasstaff go. May come to bite us or help us but either way we must live with our decisions.” Conway says as he looks down at has flesh still burning under his skin but it appears to be normal.
The morning sun is now up and the fog has started to burn off and the day is clear. You begin to make your way back towards town in the direction of the Townmaster's Hall as that is where you last saw Sildar. You continue your conversations as you travel.
Fawn turns to Halben “I feel I can make great use of it” as she makes a slashing motion with her hands as if the sword were in her hands. She then turns to Conway “What is going on with your hand Conway?”

“I will take the loot and put it with the rest of our treasures. I will take the sword and study it. Now let’s follow Iarno and get out of here”
"Agreed. I really need to rest."
“Wait Fawn, let me see that sword” Conway says as he runs up and snatched the sword from her pack. I believe I may have seen these insignias before.
