Epos, seeing Rogue dispatch the final zombie, hurries back to Xel and HDP. He thinks back to his training on how to help the Doktor... OOC: Medicine 17
Epos thinks he might be able to help, hunting close by for the ingredients for poultices and applying remedies. "There... I have done what I can. May the spirits of his ancestors bring him to light."
Epos, showing a healer's touch, is able to stop the bleeding and patch up the wound. The Herr Doktor Professor's breathing slows as he rests and recuperates.
OOC: Per the rules, HDP will take a short rest, then roll Hit Dice to recover hit points and consciousness. That'll happen in about an hour. What do you want to do until then?
Xel, examining the stain of blood and feathers suspended several feet in the air, suspects the barrier is still up -- and that Nihm flew into it beak first.
Xel tells the party: " I am at my wit's end on how to get past this barrier. And I don't think we can survive another surprise in our condition."
Xel looks at HDP to see the his chest rhythmic rise and fall of his chest as he breaths. Hopefully he'll have some healing magic to help himself and us when he comes to.
Xel thinks aloud - "Night is setting in. We'd better set up camp in a defensible area. We are being watched and our "friends" may just be waiting for the opportunity to strike while at our weakest. Epos, Khial, where should we set up camp?
OOC: Guys, do you want to take a short rest first to gain some HP back then proceed to settle in for a long rest to recharge?
OOC: Khial and Epos, please roll an Intelligence check with advantage to assess and evaluate what you've learned about this trap. Xel, do the same, but make an Arcana check instead. I'm allowing you all to roll with advantage because you're all very familiar with the traps now, since you've set off most of them.
As the Herr Doktor Professor rests, the party mulls over what they have discovered so far about the Dragon Grove.
Khial realizes he knows nothing about magic or magical traps. His hard life as a rogue has left him little time for such bookish learning.
Xel has figured out that the trap has two layers of spells placed upon it: the first is an evocation spell tied to the breath weapon of a chromatic dragon. The second, more cunning portion of the trap, he realizes is an Animate Dead spell that transforms those killed by the trap into undead guardians. What he cannot he figure out is what "resets" the trap -- allowing someone to start again if the sigils on the trees were touched in the wrong order.
Epos, like Khial, knows little about magic. He just wonders why -- if Xel is right and all that is needed is touch the sigils in the right order -- the goblinoids had a copy of that funny poem with them.
OOC: This is all based on your individual insights; no one else in the party knows them unless you talk to each other. Tell me what your characters are doing now. At the end of their actions, I will roll to regain hit points for HDP.

Epos says to the group: "Perhaps we need to look more closely at the poem.." Epos takes the parchment and reads it once more:
"From left to right / Walk the path / To the great queen // From left to right / Traverse the dangers / Left unseen. // From left to right, / Our queen's plan / Slowly unfolds.// From left to right, / The queen's return / Brings riches untold."
Do any of the sigils represent the "great queen" spoken of in the poem? OOC: HISTORY 11 RELIGION 21 INVESTIGATION 17
As Epos reads the poem aloud, Xel (whose Detect Magic spell is still active) notices that the magical energies forming the barrier around the grove seem to shift in a certain way. The barrier is still there, but it seems less stable.
Still not getting any insight, Epos, inspects the sigil on the tree to the left of where he recited the poem last. He reads the poem aloud to the group again. He pauses a bit, waiting for something to click in his mind... Nothing. He goes to the next tree on his left, trying with no luck to figure out meaning in the sigil. He then reads the poem aloud for the third time, pronouncing the words slowly and carefully, seeing if anything in the words of the poem gives a clue about the sigil
OOC: Sorry, been busy so haven't had time to post.
"Epos, as you read the poem the magic of the barrier shifted" Xel states.
OOC: When you said less stable does it mean it weakened?
OOC: Did Xel notice that as the poem was read the barrier shifted more and more. What was the condition of the barrier at the end of the poem and how long did it remain that way until it returned to its normal state
OOC: If Xel had to guess, he believes the barrier is now ready to come down -- if the sigils are pressed in the right combination. Apparently, reciting the poem is a requirement before touching the sigils.
Khial steps back further away from the sigil, traumatized by what happened the last time he tinkered with the sigil's power. "Not to be a wuss, but I would like to be alive while we figure out the secret of the sigils", the rogue half-confidently says.
Even from where Epos is standing, he sees the wizards face light up as if he just realised something. The monk continues to observe his companion with disciplined calmness, suppressing the expectant excitement welling up within him that perhaps the mage has solved this puzzle...
"Xel, it seems you have gained insight into this challenge confronting us. Do you have ideas you wish to share?"
Xel moves from sigil to sigil, each time reciting the poem.
OOC: Xel would like to see if there is any difference in how weak the barrier gets depending on which sigil he speaks the poem before. He is trying to determine which sigil should be pressed first. He is thinking the sigil where the barrier becomes weakest after reciting the poem would be the first one that needs to be touched.
Xel explains to the group: Our trial and error has not been all to waste. It would seem that this poem about the dragon queen needs to be recited prior to touching the sigils. It would also seem that we need to touch the sigils in a specific order to safely disarm this magical trap.
Xel asks Khial: "Did you find anything else on the hobgoblin body which may be another clue to this magical trap. Anything, however you may think insignificant, may be the key to this."
