Gash- Lvl14 Goblin Wizard - The High Court of the Aasimar Queen
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Althus, still paying attention to the conversation outside as he enters the place accidentally triggers a trap. A dart shoots from the wall at him. Dart Attack: 17 Damage: 5. Fortunately, he is able to dodge the dart, deflecting it with his forearm and taking no damage...or whatever else the dart might have imparted. While exploring the house, he sees a lot of interesting things, but the only thing that seems pertinent to the present task is a stack of letters neatly preserved. It seems as if Ritter was working on placing them into a book with great care. Each letter is a note or instruction from Axonia in the same ornate script as the letter that was found on Ritter. One of the letters identifies 18 Garrison Avenue as the location where the negotiators for the Hells are residing.
Gash, while preparing his spell, notices a thin, taut line feeding into a hole the back of Ritter's desk. (DEX or INT to disarm. Anyone can do it, assuming Gash shares the information.) While casually looking through Ritter's effects, he finds nothing explicitly magical out in the open. He does happen upon a business card advertising a stationary shop made with a thicker form of the same paper that Axonia's letter is composed of. It seems Ritter was buying from the store as well in the above-mentioned efforts to preserve the notes and letters from Axonia.
Martin, meanwhile, comes upon an unlocked chest. It is obvious, however, that the chest is trapped with some kind of acid sprayer. (As above, anyone can attempt to disarm with a DEX or INT check.) While looking through the pockets of an overcoat, probably worn when it rained last, he finds a notebook with a list of what looks like possible important information. Many of the items, like addresses, names, numbers, items, and dates are crossed out. One is not and is even underlined. It reads: Adjudicator - Passalwyck?
Dog does not notice anything else untoward in the place. While investigating the small library/parlor, he finds a personal vault located behind a number of books on one of the bookshelves (It has a lock, so a DEX check with thieving tools or an INT check using investigation bonus to open it.) One of the books he removed, Dog notices, is dogeared to page 333. Scrawled in the inner margin is a hasty note: Axonia - 7 Pearl Street, Market District.
It looks like you chose DEX? (They have different DCs)
Martin tries to slide an arrow in to cut the taut line attached to the lid of the chest. Unfortunately, he pulls the lid up too far, setting off the acid sprayer, coating his shoulder and neck in painful acid (Damage: 12 before it stops burning.)
Inside the chest, he finds 258 gp in various denominations of coins.
Gash tries to unhook the taut line but bumps it. A flash of heat pounds from inside one of the drawers and smoke begins to rise out of the desk. The drawer opens with a stiff tug, revealing piles of ash and scraps of illegible paper.
As the dart bounces off his armor, Althus remarks, "Seems Ritter suspected his life was at risk."
As the others continue to set off traps and destroy evidence, he'll read through the rest of the letters to see if he can get a better idea of who Axonia is or was.
“G*%#$@?!£ trap setting thief-kings!“ Martin shouts as he tries to douse the burning acid away with a sleeve of his leather coat.
He goes to wherever a kitchen in the house is to eat whatever food there is while looking for something to sooth the pain, but before that: he slaps down the notebook with the listing for “Adjudicator Passalwyck.” He’ll share it with the rest when they wrap up.
Flipping through the letters, Althus can tell that Axonia is well spoken, compassionate, and straightforward. She asks Ritter directly about his progress in spying on the devils and demons they are negotiating with. She raises concerns about the welfare of Gentoa, the child at the heart of the negotiations, and her mother, Neventi. Her hand writing is crisp and florid and she uses a dialect of language that is extremely proper.
Tockis speaking with the half-orcs outside, "So I'm into foreign stuff, like souvenirs and weapons and shit from far away lands. Who do you think might have such things or know someone who might?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As various traps get set off, Dog tries to be helpful, but always finds himself a bit too late. When Gash sets off the desk trap, he gives his friend a look of agony followed by profound sympathy. "It's okay, Gash. We'll find some other way of figuring out what Ritter was telling them. Boy we've got some rotten luck today, don't we?" He accidentally crumples one of the fancy paper stock samples in his fist as he's talking.
When he discovers the vault in the parlor, he calls Tock over. "Maybe I can help you with this lock? If I keep the bookshelf out of your way so you've got a clean entry point, and if I need to hand you a tool, just say the word." Dog will attempt to help Tock open the vault. Here's two vanilla d20 rolls for advantage, and plus 1 if it's Dog's modifier and plus 4 for Tock's: 62 (Just trying to save winenose time)
While waiting for Tock to get set up, Dog's leafing through books, and discovers the note. "Hmm. Axonia - 7 Pearl Street, Market District. That would seem to be helpful. Always check what people have dogeared in their books, my old man used to say." He looks remarkable un-self-aware while saying this.
"So 18 Garrison Avenue is a place worth checking out. Gash, maybe Friend could take a look from afar and see what's going on there, and who's watching it?" Dog says, once he has a chance to look through the letters. When Martin shows him the paper from the coat, he says, "So adjudicator sounds like the title of someone who played referee for the two sides, if I'm guessing correctly. Anyone know what kind of name Passalwyck is?" Dog history check: 9
(Does dog have thieving tools? If not, it has to be Tock or it has to be an investigation check. I will assume it is an investigation check and that Tock is busy chatting outside. Because I can. :-p)
Dog examines the personal vault carefully. It is old and scratched, paint peeling in some places. At least, that is what it is supposed to appear to be. It lacks any rust and the scratches appear to be fairly uniform in their depth and lengths, even if they are somewhat random otherwise. Ritter took pains to make the vault appear old. It is curious until Dog steps back and sees that some of the scratches reveal letters and numbers: A J VOL 3. Looking over the books on the nearby shelves, Dog finds a series of books by Arcus Janusson. Volume 3 has a key secured in a custom-made pocket on the inside of the back cover. It easily unlocks the personal vault, revealing 152 gp in various denominations, 2 Banded agates (10 gp), an eye agate (10 gp), a malachite (10 gp), a moss agate (10 gp), an obsidian (10 gp), a Lantern of Revealing, a Potion of Fire Breath, and a Potion of Water Breathing
Dog has never heard the name Passalwyck before and has no idea on its origin.
Tockis speaking with the half-orcs outside, "So I'm into foreign stuff, like souvenirs and weapons and shit from far away lands. Who do you think might have such things or know someone who might?"
(Dangit! I forgot about this.)
The leader of the trio shakes his head, but one of his buddies speaks up. "Oh, yeah. My half-brother runs a curio shop near the west entrance. You should go check his stuff out. His place is called...uh...Found Treasures."
Curious about the lantern, Dog lights it up and looks around the place with it. Otherwise he will spend his time poking through the books, looking for other notes while the others finish their investigating/trap springing.
"I assume his money should go to his cousin, though we should at least ask his friends out front. Not sure about the items. Some are valuable and could be useful in this task. But they're his. What do you think? Also should we try going to the meeting place first, or Axonia's house?"
The light fades and the house goes from dim and colorless to nearly pitch black. Outside, only a handful of streetlamps light the cobblestone and most of the neighbors have retired for the evening for dinner. The half-orcs and Tock continue to chat on the stoop as the party inside finishes their search.
Bulwark:
Across town, Bulwark and Neventi stand in silence, staring at each other as the light fades. Gentoa begins pulling on her mother's skirt. "Fine," she says, and turns and storms back into the inn, carrying Gentoa upstairs to her room for her own dinner.
Althus packs a few of the letters into his pack before turning to Dog, "Perhaps we should visit Axonia first. If someone is targeting Ritter, they may also be after her. We should ensure her safety before anything else."
Tock is elated, "This is so cool! I'll definitely pay him a visit."
And as it seems the party is finishing the search, Tock will rummage around in his pouch and give each of the half-orcs 10 gold. "It's been a pleasure fellas. I'm sure you're hungry and thirsty after all this waiting around. Here's a little something for your trouble. It's a gift. To be honest, I don't really understand how money works."
"But.. if you see or hear anything that could be related to what happened to Ritter or if anyone else comes snooping around, we would love to hear about it. You can reach us through Sister Muna, bless her soul."
