(Ack! It appears I didn't hit send or something? I had typed out that Bulwark gave Nev a nod and followed after Gash, though only to leave the inn. He'd now be outside the inn, scanning the rooftops of the surrounding buildings and the streets around him for anything out of the ordinary.)
Althus packs a few of the letters into his pack before turning to Dog, "Perhaps we should visit Axonia first. If someone is targeting Ritter, they may also be after her. We should ensure her safety before anything else."
(Is this the consensus? FYi I usually look for at least 2 or 3 people to agree with a course of action before I assume that's the way the group is going.)
It is past dinner time when all six of the adventurers arrive in the Market District. Dog, Bulwark, Gash, and Tock all realize they are only a couple of blocks away from Neventi's Inn, the Wheat and Mane. While that establishment was certainly high class, this one puts it to shame. Knocking on the door results in a stiff but polite butler answering. Upon requesting to visit with Axonia, he ushers them into a sitting room to the side of the foyer. "Please keep your weapons stowed while on the premises," he says, but makes no further request or action to disarm the party. He then leaves them to wait while he sends a girl to fetch Axonia.
Ten minutes or so pass before a demure young elven woman, clearly not fully matured, descends the stairs and enters the sitting room. "Greetings protectors," she says as they all stand. She waits until the butler and the messenger girl are both out of earshot before she continues. "I bring Herald Axonia's regards. As you have now made contact with Mistress Neventi, the deva, nor any direct representatives of the Heavens or Hells, are not permitted to meet with you. This is an explicit stipulation of the Accords, which went into effect once the child was reunited with her mother. As I am not a direct representative of the Heavens, I am permitted some limited contact with the Protectors. Please note that I have only second-hand knowledge of what the Accords state. I have no knowledge of the languages it was written in, but I shall do my best to answer any questions you may have."
"As of now....? Well, with regards to Gentoa, her mother, and you lot...nothing. They can observe, but nothing else. Both sides agreed to a complete hands-off approach to things."
"Thank you for meeting us. My name is Dog, but perhaps you knew that. What is your name?"
He will pause and then, over the course of the conversation, waiting for her to reply to each set of questions, start a few areas of inquiry with patience, trying his best not to be annoying or press to hard.
"We have been stumbling around in the dark and you can understand we have some questions! You said we are not permitted to meet with the deva nor any celestial representatives. Who or what does not permit this? The accords? Something else?"
"We tried to meet with Ritter, on recommendation of a sister of Tymora, his cousin. Before we could speak with him, someone shot him dead with a crossbow. Can you tell us anything about who might have cause to want to do that? And also what can you tell us about our role in this whole thing - even if you can't speak to the Accords... what does your side think about us? The fiendish side? And what of the giant? Would anyone want to try to keep us from finding oit what is going on?"
"Have you seen Neventi recently? Did you, and does Axonia, know that she is wearing an amulet like this? These amulets affect your mind and are nearly impossible to remove. The minotaur that kidnapped her and Gentoa tried to get us to wear all these and presented it as something Axonia's side agreed to. Neventi is wearing one still, and she is acting much differently than she did before. This can't be what the heavens had in mind. Who could help us try to remove the one around her neck? My colleague here tried and it wouldn't budge. Can you or Axonia recommend a priest who can break curses?"
"How did you get involved in all of this? We are merely circus performers who stumbled upon Nev and Genny as they were about to be attacked by fiends and decided to keep them safe. What were you and Axonia doing before all this? How are you feeling about the whole thing?"
“I’ve never met this Neventi person, nor Gentoa. I’m not hired for any job related to them. I’m here about a man named Ritter. Could I meet Axonia about that?”
(Not sure if this would be persuasion or deception, but they’re both at -1)
"We have been stumbling around in the dark and you can understand we have some questions! You said we are not permitted to meet with the deva nor any celestial representatives. Who or what does not permit this? The accords? Something else?"
Viviora speaks slowly, choosing her words carefully. "I believe that darkness you speak of was orchestrated. And yes, the Accords prohibit any involvement of the Heavens or Hells henceforth."
Viviora's eyes momentarily widen at the news. "That is terrible news. When..." she says and regains her composure. "Ritter was an agent for Axonia. He frequently met with her to provide information about...the opposition. It seems they may have discovered his role in things." She frowns slightly.
"As for your role, you are the designated protectors of Gentoa. Your task is to deliver her to her final destination. As to Axonia's opinion, I...cannot say. But a lot of trust is being placed in you." Viviora says this last part extremely slowly, navigating the words as if they are obstacles. "This is an attitude the opposition is not known for. Thus, your aforementioned darkness."
At the mention of the giant, Viviora looks puzzled. "I'm unaware of any giant," she says.
Again, Viviora speaks very cautiously. "I have been introduced to the Mother but I think it is fair to say that none of us have ever truly met Neventi Drahm. As with any negotiation, both sides played this one like Dragon Chess, making moves and counter moves to try and create as advantageous an outcome as possible. Unlike Dragon Chess, negotiations such as these do not have a very restricted set of rules. Indeed, it was a process of determining what the rules must be." It takes nearly a full minute to complete this otherwise brief answer. At the end, she gives a slight upturn of her hands as a shrug of apology. "Neither Axonia nor I are permitted to make recommendations of any sort."
"How did you get involved in all of this? We are merely circus performers who stumbled upon Nev and Genny as they were about to be attacked by fiends and decided to keep them safe. What were you and Axonia doing before all this? How are you feeling about the whole thing?"
Viviora smiles wistfully. "Axonia required assistance in navigating Masa and the negotiations. She approached me as a devout follower of Oghma, the god of knowledge. I was studying for my application to be an apprentice librarian at the great Library in Alciondria when she appeared to me. Axonia traveled from fourth heaven to head these negotiations."
At Dog's last question, she smiles. "I can only answer for myself. Having met all of you, I feel hopeful. You have allayed much apprehension in me."
“I’ve never met this Neventi person, nor Gentoa. I’m not hired for any job related to them. I’m here about a man named Ritter. Could I meet Axonia about that?”

"As of this meeting," Viviora says, "You are considered a protector of Gentoa and may not, under any circumstances, meet with Axonia."
"A protector from what? Both sides are supposed to be hands-off, yes? Are we meant to enforce these Accords?"
Viviora shakes her head. "No, but the world still has bandits, dragons, and other dangers. Arguably you also protect the interests of..." She stops, holding her breath to keep any more words from spilling out. "Forgive me. I almost overstepped my bounds."
"My new friend here does bring up a good point," Dog says. "While we have had to protect Nev and Genny from dragons and bandits, we've also had to protect them from fiends. But not angels. It seems that the hells are trying to play both sides here -- threatening the child and her protectors, and also engaging in an agreement that they seem to treat more as a charade."
Dog takes a look at the elf's neck to see if there is an amulet there. Also would Gash be getting any pings from his detect magic spell?
"Thank you for your answers and the time you're giving us, Viviora. You are a scholar! A worthy endeavor. Even if you cannot tell us relevant information, perhaps there is a library here that you could recommend for answers?"
He pauses. "No, our timeframe is a bit shorter, I'm afraid. We need to get to the bottom of this before Nev decides to leave, which might be tomorrow. You said that you can't tell us anything directly about the Accords. But if the only people who are telling us where the child will be raised are the minotaur, who kidnapped the mother and child and represents the hells, and Nev, who does not appear to be of her own sound mind thanks to magic sourced from the minotaur, is there not already interference by the hells already? What power can enforce an accord? Is there an official representative of the mage king that is aware of this that we could talk to?"
His brow furrows. "You said none of you have 'truly' met Nev. What do you mean by that? And... hold on a second. I understand you said you cannot speak about the accords, and you seem to be choosing your words carefully. But I asked you about the amulets, and you did not answer or acknowledge them. Am I to take that as a sign that they are actually a part of the accords? If so, we may just have to deal with Nev as she is. But if they are not, it is critically important that you tell us that somehow. The amulets, it seems clear, would be a direct interference in the accords and the decision of where the child's final destination will be. So this is a matter we need to address directly. I understand this may be hard, and that you may feel over your head in all this. I do too. But we have to try to do the right thing."
Viviora nods. "Both the Heavens and the Hells are bound by the Accords as soon as it went into effect," she says. "Which was the moment Gentoa was reunited with her mother." The young elf pauses to consider her words carefully. "Certainly prior this very moment, many more options were available to both parties. Henceforth, the job of the protectors will, hopefully, be more mundane."
Dog takes a look at the elf's neck to see if there is an amulet there. Also would Gash be getting any pings from his detect magic spell?
Not only does she wear no jewelry but she has no magic cast on her either. She appears to be completely devoid of any magic influence, almost as if great care has been taken to make sure that this was the case.
"Thank you for your answers and the time you're giving us, Viviora. You are a scholar! A worthy endeavor. Even if you cannot tell us relevant information, perhaps there is a library here that you could recommend for answers?"
Her smile looks sad. "Perhaps the next time you visit Masa I will be able to give you a personal tour."
"I said that I cannot read the Accords as they are written in languages I do not understand. My knowledge of the Accords is merely secondhand. I am trying to tell you what I know without putting you in danger of breaking them. My understanding is that both the Heavens and the Hells have put a lot on the line if the Accord is broken by their side." She looks to see whether or not Dog comprehends, then says, "From this point forward, The Hells...and the Heavens....have a lot of incentive to follow the rules laid out by the document."
"As for King Haddian, he personally knows what is at stake." Viviora's smile turns friendly at this statement, which she leaves conspicuously truncated."
His brow furrows. "You said none of you have 'truly' met Nev. What do you mean by that? And... hold on a second. I understand you said you cannot speak about the accords, and you seem to be choosing your words carefully. But I asked you about the amulets, and you did not answer or acknowledge them. Viviora watches with that same friendly smile as Dog puzzles things out, broadening the smile at the final statement. "The Accords are merely the rules that the Heavens and Hells must abide by in allowing Gentoa Drahm reach her final home without any further interference." Her emphasis is very slight on the second to last word and she seems to hold her breath as she thinks through whether she has said to much. She lets her breath out, confident that she has not.
"We screwed up. We brought the child back to the mother before we knew what was happening. I cannot believe that Neventi chose to sign her daughter over to the Hells... I know that amulet is controlling her I know it. She stopped me before I could dispel it. I even considered having Bulwark hold her down while I did it. But she is family and to do that in front of her child would be so traumatic, even given what she has seen already..." Gash stutters through the speech with great difficulty.
Gash casts message to Viviora:
"I know you don't want to overstep your bounds. And respect the Accord, but can you give me any information privately, through this message to help us. We need to set things right, can anything break the deal struck?"

"The only deal that has been struck is between the Heavens and the Hells. Mortals such as us...had no say in the matter."
What happens if we break that deal? If we release Neventi of that amulet and she does in fact not want to give her child to the warlock... What happens if we ignore that and give Gentoa to the heavens or something else? Please feel free to speak freely, I promise to never say anything about this conversation.
