Max hides a bit of surprise at Tally so willingly furnishing their new manor at cost. He shakes Tally's hand vigorously and says "excellent, I knew you were the right man for the job Tally!" "You be sure to just call me Max then, my friend." "Now, more importantly, we have some other business, if you'll oblige." Max puts an arm around Tally and rolls out his sketches on the counter. He starts whispering to Tally and pointing at his designs.* After a bit Max steps back, smiles at Tally, and shakes his hand once again. "Thank you Tally, feel free to stop on by the Manor during the work, or we'll just stop by again in a day or two."
"Callan, I think we need a new name for the ol' Trollskull, my friend!"
When Callan reminds Max and Zyllee about the loot, the bard replies "ah yes!" "I almost forgot amidst our payment here. Wait just a moment, I'll have a friend come along to assist." Max walks over to the stairs, transforming himself into the younger, more stylish, adventuring Max in the process before calling up"Simmons! Simmons! Could you join us for a moment?" Max waits patiently for a moment before a very handsome man dressed like a banker or a finely tailored barkeep comes down the stairs without making a sound, his sleeves rolled up, sweat on his brow, and a bit of dirt on his otherwise pristine white shirt. He stops at the bottom of the stairs and makes a small bow of the head to Max. "I trust the room is cleaning up nicely, Simmons. Well done as always. Hmmm Apologies Simmons, but you're just too pretty to risk in the part of town that we're headed to. Please do carry on with your work." Simmons looks pleased, nods again, and silently walks back up the stairs. Max seems to think for a second and says"of course!" "Bjorgen! Bjorgen! We need your services!" Suddenly a massive barbarian of a man is at the top of the stairs and descends, the individual stairs creaking under his massive weight. Anyone paying particular attention might notice that Max is mumbling something and moving his hands as Bjorgen approaches. As the man reaches the base of the stairs Max walks behind him and Callan and Zyllee get a waft of Bjorg's terrible body odor. The large man asks gruffly "what'ya need boss?" "Want any heads smashed?" Max rounds from behind the man, his hands folded behind his back and looking quite pleased and says "no thank you, Bjorgen." "Would you kindly accompany us down to the bad part of town, however? Thank you." Bjorgen only nods, his body odor somehow having vanished.
Max walks up to Zylee and Callan once again with a grin that goes from ear to ear. He says quietly "what do you think?" "I think I've finally figured out some of my magic! Bjorgen can even help carry some of that loot we left down there!"
Simmons (probably minus the weapons much of the time)
Bjorgen (probably some Grog fan art, I'll admit, but I like it anyhow)
Max (in his younger, more casual form for adventuring and street performing, as seen before)
Will tell Seath what Max has in mind with his designs.
Spells above include unlimited Disguise Self for Hugo's various forms, unlimited Silent Image for his NPC assistants, the Actor feat for imitating other voices when hidden behind Bjorg, and Prestidigitation for creaking sounds, smells, etc. Unfortunately the Verbal components of some of those spells give Max away a bit during his 'performance', but otherwise I think it all flies. Projecting his voice across a room to make them talk is another challenge, but at least he can make Bjorgen speak when hiding behind him.
Callan nods to Max concerning the name, "Oh yes. It sounds like the locals don't have too much of an attachment, so we can make it ours. We have time though, a week or two at least before we'll be ready to open. Let's mull on it for now, talk about it over several pints of ale, sleep on it and decide the names we picked while drunk are horrible, and then repeat the process a few times."
Later, when Hugo shows off, Callan claps in delight, then proceeds to circle around Bjorgen, occasionally poking the fake barbarian with an inquisitive finger, "Oh yes, this is marvelous. Illusions of this kind of quality are quite rare, Well done, well done indeed!"
"Shall we get moving then? I'd rather be back out of that region before nightfall."
"Thanks Callan! Right, let's go. Bjorgen, would you please?" The barbarian walks past the trio and there is another waft of strong body odor combined with wet dog. Max is standing behind the other two practicing his craft, performing his magic while hiding the various required verbal and somatic steps as best he can. Bjorgen arrives at the front door of the private part of their new manor and opens it, holding it for everyone and lowering his head politely. Max giggles a little from behind Zyllee but quickly recovers, keeping a straight face otherwise despite his excitement for weaving all of this new magic into his craft.
Unseen Servant stacked with the silent image. Max will probably be stacking these along with any ability to add sounds and smells quite a bit during their down time.
Max and Callan finalize the deal with Tally to get things at cost. He mainly wants some better tools to help him work better and faster at his craft. He asks Callan if he has any ideas for potential things to help him churn out his pieces faster via some engineering. He doesn’t mind using metal tools if needed, but he won’t incorporate such things into his work.
Jynks is enraptured by Callan when he tells him about potentially getting access to a spellbook. He looks to his friends Nat and Squiddly with a bright gleam in his eyes as he hops up and down clutching his owlbear stuffed animal.
“Oh boy, oh boy, this is the best day ever you guys! I’m surely going to become the best wizard alive! Isn’t that right, Waffles?” he asks the stuffed owlbear.
Nat then signs something to Jynks with a serious and determined nod, and he responds back to her in a similar sign language. The language appears to be a mix of street signs and thieves cant, though it’s a very basic version with some custom meanings. Zyllee notices that she says something to the effect of, “Congratulations, but you are already a great wizard.”
After handing Jynks the old notes, the three children eventually run off after saying their goodbyes. Their spirits seem much higher after the encounter.
---
Fala is happy to sell Zyllee a potion of healing, “Thank you so much! I hope it serves you well. Please feel free to stop by anytime. I’ll even give you a tour of the greenhouse upstairs if you’d like.”
---
The three of you eventually finalize the paperwork with Volo and the magistrate to put the manor legally in your name. When the tiefling magistrate asks for payment of taxes and fees, Volo hands her a pouch of gold and says to you all, “Courtesy of Floon and Renaer.”
---
The three of you make your way back to the abandoned building where you encountered the Kenku. You quickly find the loot that you weren’t able to retrieve the first time around. It’s still sitting in the secret room.
As you begin making your way back with the hoard, Zyllee notices that someone is keeping tabs on the group from the shadows. Furthermore, whoever they are appear to be watching Max in particular.
Reminder of loot:
Four wood-framed paintings wrapped in leather. The paintings depict the cities of Luskan, Neverwinter, Silverymoon, and Baldur’s Gate and are worth 75 gp each.
The second crate, stolen from a caravan on the High Road, contains fifteen 10-pound silver trade bars, all black from corrosion but still worth 50 gp each.
Max reverts to his more regal form for the signing of paperwork for the manor, pulling Volo aside if need be to resolve any confusion. He signs in the name of Maximillian Mercutio Eovaldi.
On their way to get the loot adventuring-Max walks proudly in front of his new bodyguard, probably being a bit too confident considering the type of folks they have gotten themselves entangled with. He has Bjorgen carry one of the paintings, wishing his magic could support more weight in honor of the barbarian. The novice adventurer doesn't take many precautions on the trip.
Callan nods in response to Tally's request, "Certainly! Lets start by narrowing down where the greatest need is. Can you walk me through the most time consuming tasks common to your work? I imagine that planing and sanding are two big ones, but you know your field better than I."
---
The gnome smiles as he watches the kids run off. There was no telling at this point whether the aspiring mage had the knack for wizardly magic, few did, but there was no harm in passing off a few notes on how to change the color of a surface. Who knows, maybe the boy's dreams will come true.
---
Callan looks around as the group heads back from the warehouse. He was pleased with how smoothly that had gone, "You guys know anyone particularly suited to taking these off of our hands?"
No need to actually go into detail on Tally and Callan talking shop if you don't care to, its liable to go on for a while :P
Did some quick research on vintage woodworking tools. Looks like a surprising amount of stuff is doable. Oscillating saws and belt sanders (with considerably less consistent sandpaper, but still) are doable, as are various relatively high speed planers and turning lathes. A grinder would also be doable, though that's a poor choice for woodwork in my experience, its better off being reserved for sharpening his tools. Given Callan's particular field of expertise, it should be possible to make such tools that move on their own to at least a limited degree (IE a magical version of an electric motor, If I can make an articulated cat leg work on its own effectively, making a shaft rotate should be easy stuff), further improving their effectiveness. It is not an explicit ability though, so of course it is up to DM fiat if/how that would work and how it would impact the difficulty and cost of making the thing.
As they walk along Zyllee feels tension enter her. While her companions enjoy their triumph something seems off. Glancing casually she notices someone that seems to be shadowing them. Speaking softly she says, " Guys... be careful. Someone is following us. They have been for a few minutes. Whoever it is seems to be paying extra attention to Max. "
Callan's eyes go wide at this news. "Okay, um, uh, do you think we can lose him for just a moment? Long enough for Hugo to conjure up a member of The Watch? Have the illusion stand somewhere the follower would have to pass by in order to keep following. If he doesn't want to be seen by The Watch, that would probably give us enough time to truly lose him."
Max whispers back to Zyllee and Callan. "Oh, ah, yeah, maybe I, we, I shouldn't have been so obvious coming back here, huh? Live and learn, right? Or perhaps just learn?" Max swallows hard at the last thought. "Zylee, where are they? They could be getting awfully sleepy, if they are close enough."
"Sure, we can do that around the next corner if you like. This follower can run into a Watchman, or Bjorgen." Max has a particularly mischievous tone when thinking of having his new 'bodyguard' scare someone off, but knows a member of the Watch may be a safer bet.
Zyllee looks unsure about their suggestions. " I am not sure that we can lose him for enough time Callan. " She glances at Max. " It is worth a shot though. We do not need to be followed to our home. " Still speaking softly she describes where the furtive figure is currently located
"Oh **** this, follow me!" Max and Bjorgen thrust the paintings they were carrying at Callan and turn and start to sprint towards the alleyway that Zyllee referenced, hoping to startle their stealthy observer and send him or her running so they stand out to Max. The unseen servant does it's best to keep it's cargo safe and close to Callan, following the artificer as quickly as it can if need be.
Movement: 30ft
Action: Command Bjorgen, changing the image's shape so he moves naturally.
Bonus Action: tell unseen servant to make it look like Callan might be carrying the painting and follow if necessary
Right as Max begins sprinting towards the alley, several Waterdavians who were going about their business are startled by the abrupt painting toss and sprinting through the streets. Meanwhile, the shadowy figure immediately notices the charging half-elf rushing towards him and runs away deeper into the back alleyways of the city.
Bjorgen disappears as he and Max reach the alley and suddenly appears at the far end of said alley, arms folded and looking mean. Max looks to see if he can spot the figure.
Max does not find the figure, but he does find something he believes the figure dropped. A black eye patch lays on the ground near where the figure once was.
Max picks up the eye patch and examines it, beckoning Bjorgen to join him once again. "Hey, Zyllee, look at this. Do you think his other nine eyes work? Or is it eight? You know, because beholders and such? No? Bad joke? Ah well... I gotta tell ya, I wanted to just put that guy to sleep, but through the crowd I just couldn't gauge the distance for my spell no matter what I did. The alleyway was a much further run than I thought. He was fast Zyllee, so fast. You don't even know. I guess it just wasn't my destiny to catch him no matter what I did."
Callan comes huffing up at a run after Zylee, awkwardly carrying the painting foisted upon him. He looks at the eyepatch, and then down the alley where the spy had disappeared, "Hey, it was a good try. Looks like he had a shorter distance to run than you did to get away anyways. Regardless, we seem to have lost him for now, lets get moving again, in a different direction, and pop into a store or something until sure he's off the trail. It will give me a chance to make sure that eyepatch is just an eyepatch too."
I can pop Detect Magic, but unless there's particular need for haste I'd rather run it as a ritual given the limited number of slots I have.
"Yeah, sounds good Callan. There's no rush, at least not until nightfall. Perhaps being so obvious about this wasn't such a good idea, huh? Maybe Bjorgen needs to find new employment? I guess this adventuring stuff comes with enemies. I'll have to be more careful, I guess."
Max continues "I can dismiss Bjorgen and change my appearance, but I don't think I can disguise all of us, and the paintings. Maybe I could create a large illusion to completely cover one of you and the paintings, though. Do either of you have a bit of magic to complete our party's new disguise, just so we can get home?"
Max moves out into the street again and announces to no one in particular "sorry, sorry!" "False alarm! Thought I saw a troll. Those things need to be dealt with, and all. Apologies, carry on!"
Zyllee frowns as the strange figure got away. " Yes, we must be more cautious in the future. We arent homeless urchins anymore that attract no attentiion. In response to Max's query she grins. " Can i help disguise us? This is what i do for a living. " She waves her hand and a large half-orc stands there in heavy armor. " Shall we go?" The elves voice sounds unsettling coming from the large figure.
"Hehe, I figured you could... Not sure HE fits our new, stealthy approach but I do really like him. Nice work! Let's find a shop as Callan suggested and then we can reset our disguises."
(also happy to roll to investigate this eye patch, if there's anything unique about it)
Callan hurries along as the group heads off in a different direction, trying not to look as if he's hurrying, and trying not to stare suspiciously down every alley they pass.
