"We're your men then sir!" Fjolnir enthusiastically replies and approaches the skipper to shake on it. "I've had my heapin share of pirate run-ins, and worked for a few years to track them whence they've berthed. We'll check with the harbormaster at Baldur's Gate while ya off the cargo- if there's passage for work across the shining sea we'll take that, failing that we'll take ya up on that offer. Not that i'd be stingy with my coinpurse, but I want to make sure we have means ta supply ourselves for a trek overland."
He returns the handshake. "It'll be good to have someone with experience. Welcome aboard. I'm Captain Balor Miggeter. We set sail soon, if ya need anythin', ask me or first mate Filclarin. It's three days and a wake up to Waterdeep, settle in."
After all the goods are loaded, the ship pulls out of the harbor and the sails are opened. There are enough food supplies onboard to not need to dip into your personal stash, and there's room for your warhorses and carts, even if they'll get a bit messy. You and your Barrier Peaks guides are all settled in on the main deck, (the lower deck smells like b.o. and is a bit cramped) and trade-off between keeping lookout and working on sails, oars, or whatever needs doing around the ship. Mary does not work, if that's a surprise, she sits near the middle of the deck petting her cat familiar and shuffling a deck of cards, claiming sea sickness. Gearbox follows Garrett around and helps in whatever task he's doing.
Az doesn't have sea sickness but has trouble maintaining balance while walking on deck. He does everything he can to complete the tasks that need to be done. But falls down a lot.
Every time Az falls, a nearby crew member helps him up, and for some reason, pats his head.
Your journey proves smooth, the seas aren't normally rough this time of year, but late into your first day at sea someone on lookout runs over and quietly notifies the captain about something. He gathers you around with some of his other guards and announces, "The lookout noticed 'humanoids' watching us from the water. Not sure how many, but I'm guessing merfolk. In my experience, they're either curious or they're going to attack. Probably just curious, otherwise they'd have made their move, but anything's possible, merfolk are crafty. We might be trespassing and they're just waitin' for the right moment. You're expert bodyguards, what do you think we should do?" He asks, with an expecting grin on his face.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Mostly a lot of greenwater experience myself, but i've definitely heard of em..." Fjolnir scratches at his beard a moment thinking about them; History 12"If need be, i'll shimmy up the main mast an keep an eye peeled on them... I can track humanoids well, but an approach that's hostile or friendly I'll not ken- Er, wheres that... she's a smart one..." he looks around for Mary- "Oi Mary?! ...Somone wannna ask her if she knows how to talk to mer?
Fjolnir remembers tales of merfolk. While rare, the captain's words coincide with what he's heard: They watch passing ships with curiosity and sometimes jump aboard to raid the ship of their treasures. If they decide to attack, it's usually because they know they'll overwhelm the ship's crew, so larger ships are at lower risk of attack.
Mary rolls her eyes. "Merfolk speak common." Her cat's tail twitches as it tries to sleep and Mary continues shuffling her deck of cards from the portion of the boat with the least amount of movement.

'Oh ye roll yer eyes, missie, I don't assume to know their culture or language anymore than id assume they knew how long to heat yer pickaxe fore breadbaking on-" he rubs his furrowed brow and looks up at Dirk, "Whatcha see up there, ugly?"
I counts about 7 total merfolk at any given time, but some go beneath the waves, and he's unsure if it's the same or different ones that pop back up..... that was weird. ( I wasn't actually attempting to be practical, I was just bored and wanted to walk vertically up the mast) I then walk upside down along the main topgallant yard, or the horizontal beams attatched to the mast.
I yell from upside down. Ahoy sea people! Let us all have a great day, and not get hostile and murdery at each other! Is there any business you would have with us otherwise?
They all look at each other and go below the waves for a few seconds. One comes back up and says, "We were just ensuring that you had good intentions, as there have been fishermen poaching the killer whales lately. We have agreed that you are not a fishing vessel and may pass, but while we're here, do you have anything worth trading?"
At this point in time, you may trade with the merfolk. For flavor's sake, I'll say you can swap any weapon or armor or other piece of equipment as long as it makes sense and is within reason, with a similar item from the merfolk that has been constructed of items that you can only find in the ocean or coastal regions. Like a sword of coral and bone, or a barnacle-covered set of armor. This would be for flavor only and has no bearing on stats, just a cool-looking sea item, if you're into that.
Also, you each receive 100xp for not initiating confilct.

I communicate with the captain and suggest a most diplomatic exchange of food that either side might not otherwise have access too. Trade one of my daggers for a merfolk dagger.
I look at Fjolnir to make sure this makes sense.

I play music from time to time, begrudgingly help with some of the labor, and discretely inform everyone that Az likes to be pet.

Staff in hand, I cast spider climb on self and walk up the mast to the top for a better view of the Merfolk.

Also, the rigging and... the ladder, would've enabled you to get up to the top, but I see you're going for effect.

Dusty clings to the rail of the ship, trying desperately not to hurp -hurp - hooork. Shit. "Talking is good."

Dusty smiles weakly at the sea people and tries not to chum the waters again in their sight.
Fjolnir pulls the Goblin Scimitar he grifted a few days back and drops it handle first over the gunwhale to trade.
Absinthe pours some of his brew into a flask and tosses it to one of the merfolk. "That's complimentary!"
