To Kerowyn: Nay lady. I cannot take advantage of a simple mistake. I pull out the additional silver piece and put it on the counter.

At the General Store...
”Why thank you for forgiving an old woman her transgressions my dear. Good luck to you!”
At the Shrine of Pelor...
Corkie shifts her robes a little uncomfortably before replying, “Well... there is one thing a paladin like yourself might do for us...”
“A perfect, ruby-red apple ripens on the Gulthias Tree at the summer solstice. The midsummer fruit grants vigor, health, and life. It heals those who suffer from any disease or other ailment and I could use it to aid the sick and poor here in Oakhurst. For the past twelve years the goblin tribe infesting the Sunless Citadel has been selling a single piece of this magical fruit to the highest bidder in town (the fruit sells for around 50 gp, which is all the townsfolk can bring themselves to pay a goblin). I have tried to plant the seeds at the center of each fruit the shrine of Pelor received, hoping to engender an enchanted apple tree, but when the seeds germinate in their proper season, they produce a twiggy mass of twisted sapling stems. Not too long after the saplings reach 2 feet in height, they are stolen — every time! The townsfolk and I assume the goblins send out thieves to ensure their monopoly of enchanted fruit. If you can get use one of these fruits without the goblins knowing we have it we may be able to grow a tree for ourselves! The shrine would be able to aid people in Oakhurst and likely become a pilgrimage place in which case we will be able to help others as well!”
“If you can accomplish this noble paladin then we would be in your debt forever. Of course if you agree I will supply you with the holy water you requested and whatever else you might think you need... though mind you.. time is of the essence.. it is almost midsummer!”
DM Note: It is the 1st of Summertide today.. you have about two weeks til the solstice.
Even if you agree and fail you still get what you need XD (of course this would be out of your character's perceived personality so far for you, but then again none of us know about anything you may be hiding behind the veil so to speak)
Are these apples the property of these goblins? I shan't steal from them, as that would be unbecoming, if they lawfully have claim to them. Should I acquire such an apple in our quest, I would be happy to donate it to your temple upon my return.
But I don't understand something. Why would you think one I bring out would sprout true or that you would be able to bring it to full maturation?

Corkie is slightly taken aback by your response and seems to plead with you, "The goblins are squatting in the Sunless Citadel. In the past they have attacked villagers and stolen their goods. Now, the goblins sell us the fruit which becomes rightfully ours once purchased... should we decide to plant the seeds from this fruit does it not make the tree that grows from it ours? Except in this case the goblins seem to steal the saplings! This is not right, nor just brother paladin and in the eyes of Pelor these goblins are evil. If you were to bring me an apple though, without the goblins knowledge they will have little chance of stealing the sapling for they cannot steal what they do not know exists. I do not see this as malicious.. the fruits of our labor as priests go to benefit the common folk after all. I beseech you bring me an apple if you can for the people of Oakhurst will need our help in hard times."
Alten: I would like to try to get a read on her veracity
I know nothing of the history of this Sunless Citadel, nor of your history with these Goblins. Your descriptions do imply an unjust nature from these goblins.
One our precepts is penance, specifically what we call the Debt of Persecution. This would seem to fit. I pledge my attempt to secure an apple. If I am successful, I return it without letting goblins know you have it. Will that suffice?

Nat 20 regardless, lol.
Corkie seems to genuinely believe the goblins are malicious and that the shrine could use the apple for good. She does seem a little hurt that you asked if she was asking you to steal the apple. However, there was a little gleam in her eye when she said if the shrine had a tree that could produce these magical apples then it would become a place of pilgrimage. These leads you to believe that Corkie may have higher designs than being a simple priestess of a small town shrine.
Corkie responds to your pledge with outward glee, "Oh thank you! This is wonderful! Wait here I will be right back!" She goes into a side room for a few moments, after which she emerges and hands you the Holy Water (flask) you requested and a Mirror, Steel. "Here is some holy water, I blessed it myself. And please take this mirror. You can use it to direct the blessed light sent down to use from Pelor. Good luck to you brother.. I hope to see you with the apple in a fortnight!"
The mayor has been re-elected many times and has taken up residence in the Village Hall across the way from the Ol’ Boar...
Grom you arrive at the Village Hall, knock on the front door, and are shown in by a servant who asks you to wait in the parlor for Mayor Vurnor Leng — a middle aged human nobleman — while he finishes speaking with Oakhurst’s constable Felosial — a female half-elf veteran. The two are in the room next door to the parlor having what sounds like a heated discussion. As you are waiting and trying to make out what the two are saying, Alten is shown into the parlor by the same servant who let you in. You motion to him to be quite and listen as well.
DM Note: One of you please make a perception check with advantage (I am assuming one is helping the other hence I’m giving advantage instead of doing separate checks) to try and discern what the mayor is saying.
Talien, now finished honing the edges of his blade, begins to polish it with a rag. Still sitting at the table alone, waiting for the others to arrive if they do as the time draws near to the time he is planning on departing. He thinks to himself as he polishes the blade, he should have just enough time to complete this one and his masters blade before the time is up.
All the time the others spend checking the town for supplies and information the little halfling Chatra is entertaining patrons in the tavern. Playing his Lute and singing songs of heroic deeds he has done in the past.
When a song ends, before Chatra can start another, Talien says to him, Are you ready to get this journey underway? It is getting close to time to leave, are the others coming?
yes, it is about time we get rest before tomorrow’s venture. But the others are not back yet and we should probably wait. Speaking of which, I have not met any “warforged” in my travels before. Does your kind sleep? Well even if you do not, the rest of us do need it. We can’t venture into this rumored place and expect to come out alive if we’re all half exhausted.

I think we should leave today Tailen grumbles, We do not sleep as you call it, I will simply just stop when i decide to rest, and I will resume my activities after about 6 hours. I can hear and see in that state, but if I react, it pauses my rest and it will still need to be completed so that I do not tire. Also I did not know that talking requires alot of energy, is this common to all of your kind?

well I understand you may not need to rest. But some of the party we’ll need to. It would be better if we all are in our best form so you can reclaim your dagger as you said.
Talien's eyes start glowing red, staring directly at Chatra. He stops polishing the blade as he speaks the words in a quiet but grave tone. You doubt my skills to reclaim my dagger alone?

The patrons of the Ol' Boar write your playing and singing off as drunken banter. The nobleman reading looks up at one point, shakes his head, and mumbles something indiscernible under his breath. Eventually he just gives up, rises from his seat, and exits out the front door slamming it shut behind him. The older gnome who was drinking at the bar alone also gets up to leave, but as he does tosses you a few copper and says, "That's for getting under the skin of that stuck up nobleman... haha!"

I strive to serve, if Torm wills it. Many thanks.
I'll leave the shrine. I'm curious about the goblin attacks. Is there any kind of obvious town guards, sheriff, or militia that I can locate?

There is a town jail that anyone has yet to explore.
