Alten will go over, move the cover out of the way and take a look (darkvision 60' if applicable, passive perception is 11, if active perception check is needed: 12)

There's a rusty looking iron ladder leading down into darkness. There is a trickle of a small stream running down the middle of what looks like a five-six foot tunnel. It looks like it runs deeper into the city and probably out towards the river. It smells musty, dank, and a bit like human sewage. You can hear more rats scratching and squeaking and moving around. There is no immediate sign of the cloaked figure.
hearing Alten move the m the manhole Shake turns away from Rees and sees what Alten is doing. "Hey! where did that manhole come from?!? I could have sworn it wasn't there a moment ago. The rats must have been protecting the manhole. Weird. Is there anything down there?

DM Note: Grom is still back in the shop.. this came in via PM over the weekend:
Back in the pawn shop..
Grom will move toward him [the shop keeper], and swing in an attempt to incapacitate the shop keeper
Unarmed Strike: 19 Damage: 2 - DM Note:Unarmed Strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier
The old man is just a commoner and the blow takes him by surprise. It knocks him unconscious and Grom collects the Mithril and takes a look around for anything else of interest
Perception: 13 Investigation: +1 more (so 14)
Behind the counter on the floor Grom finds a rather filthy cloth bag that looks like it was used to store the mithral. Not finding any other "evidence" he scoops it up and leaves the shop, as he is leaving he casts Arcane Lock on the door and will go after the group...
So Grom catches up.. do you fill him in and ask him if the group is going to follow? Or would you have made the decision to go down without him? (Doesn't seem like your PC would but want to ask)
I thought Grom was with us when we went after the guy. If he went back in the shop, I missed it. My bad. I was just trying to RP letting Grom be in charge since we voted him leader :)
Alten is going down in the absence of anybody stopping him.

"Singing songs one moment, chasing down rat masters the next. Who knew being a bard would be so exciting?" Shake is a bit shaken, but will follow the party down.
Alten climbs down, followed by the rest of the party (assuming those who haven't said it yet are going so you don't split party).
After climbing down your suspicious are confirmed this is definitely a sewer albeit since it's the middle of summer it is dry. What water is in the sewer runs towards the mirabar river and the way you traveled. It is flowing from deeper in the city. The sewer is wide enough for single file travel and tall enough where you do not have to hunch in this section. There is no immediate indication of which direction the suspicious figure went and there are rats in both directions based on the skippering shadows, chatters, and slight scraping of nails you hear from both.
You can make another investigation check to see if there is something you missed from above that you are not immediately seeing.
It is faint, but you spot a symbol etched into the wall across from the ladder. It looks like it's in thieves cant! It says "Iron Hand" but the "R" is backwards and faces down the path deeper into the city. There also appears to be more rats that direction than the other...
Assuming Rees point it out, Alten whispers to everyone
Iron Hand is the group that Bozack was concerned about, right? Let's take a look, but if we run into anybody, we've never heard of them. We noticed the guy paying undue attention to our bard and ran when we approached. We're just trying to find out who he is and what he wants.
