Scimitar vs. Killian: 18 Scimitar vs. Killian: 9
A field of energy shimmers around Killian as sweeps twice, cutting through a man's throat and into the lungs of his companion, sending both of them to the ground to bleed out. The other two men don't hesistate, stepping around to flank her. "Oh, you'll pay for that," the talker boasts, but both men's responding strikes are too slow. Killian easily parries one while deflecting the second with her shield. Gasps rise from the crowd, marveling at the speed of the woman who has come from nowhere to defend them.
Round 2 Order: Bandits Killian <=====
Tracking: Two bandits remain, both engaged in melee combat with Killian.
OOC: What are Gruun and Hox doing with the rest of their night?
Hox nods his scaly head, "Then we must go for this Kurth ship. Hox cannot make master wait any longer." Hox hops up, "Know the way to ship?" He asks the elf man.
Killian plunges her sword through an attacker's leather armor, then spins, batting another attack away with her shield and slashing across the last man's chest. The four bodies fall in near synchronicity around the paladin. Not knowing how to react, the crowd cautiously stares at her in the eerie glow of the burning structure.
Within a minute, city guards have arrived on the scene, quickly directing bystanders to put out the fire. With the situation under control, the guard captain approaches Killian. "We've been looking for these clowns all week. I don't know or care who you are or why you helped, but tonight your drinks are on the city watch," he says.
_______________________
"You show up at Ship Kurth unannounced, you're as good as dead," the half-elf responds to Hox. "Do what you will, but I'm telling you you need to make a name for yourselves in the pits first. Your bugbear friend looks tough enough to handle it, and we can make some good money while he does it."
Hox is quiet for a moment before nodding, "Gruun just needs to fight then, yes? Beat those in the pit? Then we can go to this ship...Then Gruun will fight." Hox agrees to go along with the half-elf. He looks over to Gruun with a slight look of confusion, "...we need one that knows of Sal, this seem like a good way..." He sort of pleads and reasons quietly.
Killian, flush from battle, stares around a little wildly as the fourth thug falls, causing the bystanders to shrink back. But the fury fades, if slowly. She cleans her sword on the clothing of one of the dead, and examines the masks they wear. She glances disinterestedly at the beaten man, and brushes off any thanks from the crying woman.
When the guards arrive, she engages them in conversation. "I am... a paladin of Ilmater, I would know more about these men," she waves the mask she is still holding. "To whom do they owe allegiance?"
"If I must fight to get there, then show me where the pits are that I can get started." Gruun, with a tightness in his voice, is short a curt with the response staying focused on the street ahead of him.
OOC: Sorry guys, had my phone crash on my and was home with a sick baby for a couple days. I should be back to at least daily now.
The guard captain answers Killian as his men finish dispersing the crowd and unmasking the bodies. "They only owe allegiance to themselves. These men have been shaking down easy targets and burning sections of Luskan every night. That one's a former guardsman...explains how they were able to evade our patrols so easily. Once push came to shove they were clearly no match for a trained fighter. You've made all our jobs easier. Will you accompany us to our keep while we report this? I'm sure we can dig up a reward and drinks for your help."

Gruun and Hox begin making their way toward a brawl.
Killian considers... balancing her desire for meting out more justice against the chance to advance their efforts in Luskan... and drinks, of course. "I would be glad to make report of this Captain, lead on," she says.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
The rest of the night is a complete blur, but the party awakes in the same room at the One Eyed Jax the next day with a splitting headache and aching muscles. As you come to, vision swimming, you realize all of your weapons and armor are missing.
Zane only vaguely remembers the beginning of his conversation with the hooded man at the bar, and discovers a piece of parchment within a fold of his pockets; a deed in Zane's name to somewhere called Alterwood on the island of Tuern.
Killian remembers nothing after accompanying the guards to report the deaths of the arsonists, and wakes up holding a tiger cub in the process of licking her face. The small animal wears a collar, but has no identification.
Hox remembers a fair amount of whooping and hollering alongside a group of gamblers, and remembers the intent for Gruun to fight Ship Kurth's champion, but can't recall any of the actual fighting. He is holding a crumpled parchment in his hand that reads "Wanted for Obscenity: Lord Bartle", complete with a picture of the grotesque red-cloaked mage. It is dated around the same time Hox and Gruun were working for him, seeking a ruby hidden in a kobold mine.
Gruun remembers nothing more than Hox, and awakes 41 gold pieces richer, wearing a saddle. There are whip marks on his body, and he carries the bruises and cuts of a long night of fighting.
OOC: 41 gold pieces have been added to Gruun's inventory. 1 gold piece has been removed from each character's inventory for the night at the One Eyed Jax. 1000 gold pieces have been added to each character's inventory for the sale of most of the stolen gems.
Each character has gained the benefits of a long rest but has awoken with 3 levels of exhaustion (disadvantage on ability checks, speed halved, disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws).
Killian wakes blearily, then, "What in the nine hells?!" she sits up and holds the tiger cub out with both hands at arms length. Then she sags, dropping the cub, "Ooh, I hurt. What did I drink last night?" She looks around at the others. "I need to rest more," she says as she lays back down.
She will attempt to get a Long Rest. Given how this has gone, I do not expect she will accomplish this, but this is her intent at the moment.
Edit: She has not noticed that her sword and armor are gone.
Hox awakes to find his pockets full, a random note, and having lost his stabbers and leathers...So somewhat nude and on top of gold, just like a dragon.
Gruun struggles awake, sitting up bleary and glaring around. He'll remove the saddle and look around for his Greataxe, not finding it he'll locate the best weapon available, drink anything in the vicinity, and pass back out in a corner.
Zane wakes up, sees the surroundings and is not impressed. He casts Prestidigitation for a few minutes cleaning everything up, but seeing nobody else caring to get up.
He drags others closer together, casts a hut around everyone and also takes a long rest.
Suddenly (before Zane is able to finish casting his hut) the door to the room opens, and several dour looking children enter. Looking no older than nine or ten, their faces are serious. They display no emotion. Telepathically, a voice booms loudly (too loudly for your hungover state) in your minds.
"Awaken! Follow the schoolchildren. They will take you to our meeting."
A shout emanates from the hall, "What in the hells is going on up there?" The barkeep from the night before, still not dressed for the day, enters the room. Taking a single glance at the children within, he doubles back, terrified.
"ټکان" One of the children speaks a word wholly unfamiliar to your minds, and the barkeep stops in his tracks, his horrified visage locked in place.
For Zane:
You immediately recall more of your conversation with the hooded figure last night. One of the leads he had buried within the conversation mentioned schoolchildren frequently.
Killian springs up, reaching for her sword, and notices for the first time that it is missing. Then she wobbles a little on her feet, staring at the children. Then her eyes widen as the barkeep is held in place. Gathering up the tiger cub, she nods at her companions, then to the children. "Lead on."

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
OOC: Assuming Gruun and Hox are also coming along.
The bright sunlight of the morning assaults your senses as the children lead you out of the One Eyed Jax, leaving the barkeep behind. The strange procession takes you through a series of back alleys into a street of artisan's further into town, and into a butcher's shop.
The children hustle you into a room, still in various states of undress. Inside the 20-by-30 foot room, it is well appointed, tiled in reddish-brown, with several drains and a few chained hooks hanging from the ceiling. After barely a moment to acclimate, the door opens, and a figure walks in, heavily cloaked with an extremely large hood. A middle-aged female tiefling follows the shrouded figure and seats herself on a chair that abruptly materializes. One of the children, a young tiefling girl, pushes a mop in a bucket into the room and closes the door behind her, humming a jaunty tune to herself. She leads you to chairs of your own, smiles, and says, "Headmistress wants to know if you stole something last night." The girl begins juggling some rings while balancing on one foot, seemingly uninterested in what is transpiring. You quickly realize your rings of mind shielding have gone missing from your fingers.
OOC: This is another "social encounter" of the adventure, a moment where character responses can shape the direction the story takes. How does each character respond to the situation, in either first or third person?
