As the distance between ships closes, Killian will look for Hox. “I would use your new bow, little dragon, if it is too much for you. Take a test shot, once we are within 800 feet. Then leave me some arrows.” She shields her eyes and looks at the enemy in the distance.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
OOC: Characters have gained the benefits of a short rest.
As the hours roll by, the black dot on the horizon grows slightly larger, becoming the faint outline of a large ship. The Flying Mermaid breaks through the waves, using its speed to close the gap.
"Most of my crew is human. I would be remiss to close in under nightfall," Captain Thitcher tells the group atop the deck. "Unless you object, we will follow at a distance until sunrise."
OOC: How does each character respond to the situation, in either first or third person?
“I would not object, but we must be wary they do not turn and strike in the night. They know they cannot outrun us. Cornered prey is more dangerous than ever.”

"Darkness does not stop my hunt however, I will not strike when my pack is hindered. I will help keep watch and we will strike with the sun." Not going to stay up all night and miss a long rest but I can at least take a guard shift.
"Very well. My men will hold a watch. Feel free to keep your own if you would like," Captain Thitcher says before hollering orders to the crew. His men begin to tie up sails and prepare to slow for the night. A few minutes later, a sailor calls from the crow's nest, "They've slowed, Captain. We'll be good to keep pace."
OOC: A character can take watch for up to 2 hours during a long rest and still gain the benefits, so Zane will still get his long rest, as long as it's not interrupted for longer than an hour.
The oppressive darkness of the night weighs over The Flying Mermaid as the crew and the adventurers it carries begin their night's rest. Zane returns to his purchased quarters below deck, while Killian, Gruun, Hox, and four crewmen find spots along the deck to sleep. One member of the crew will patrol the deck throughout the night, while another roosts in the crow's nest above. Gruun, Hox and Zane fall to a slumber while Killian takes up watch.
For Killian:
All is peaceful throughout the first hour of your watch. A light mist rolls in soon after, causing lessened visibility on the ship and the waters surrounding it.
A light mist lingers throughout the night as the watch is taken up by Gruun, and then Hox, who moves below deck to wake Zane.
As Zane sits atop the railing above his sleeping companions, watching the crewman's patrol, the calm ambience of lapping waves is broken by a muffled grunt. A dark form falls from the crow's nest, landing painfully and broken onto the deck.
Zane immediately drops into a crouch behind the railing and looks up at the crow's nest. Was there an obvious reason for what just happened? Did the patrolling crewman see this happen? Does the fallen form look like part of the crew or something else entirely?
He also silently nudges Hox awake and signals for him to be quiet, then points to the fallen form.
He then scans around for anything else being weird or about to happen.
(OOC: do I understand correctly that this is before the benefits of the long rest are attained?)

(Oooo that is just right...)
Killian will take her short rest, and expend 4 hit dice.

Zane using hit dice: (song of rest: 1) + 2 + 3 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 7. So using all to get to full.
(Hox will use three. Back to Full.)
3 + 5 + 5

Zane says, "No objection here, I could really use a long rest."
Killian does not turn from watching the ship.

Hox groans, "Hox no like bright light but know that others can't see like Hox and Gruun. Will watch ship too."
(Kilian will take a watch too, as part of the group's (futile?) attempt to get a Long Rest.)

Gruun can take second watch when it is fully dark.
Zane needs a long rest, but if that can be achieved and also a watch taken then he would take the last one.
Hox will take third then.
