Nok Nok shrugs as the mama hawk falls lifeless from the sky, grumbling, "She looked shady." He loads another bolt in his crossbow and lets it fly toward the final cultist.
The knight is greatful for the assistance. "I am Emarkos. Thank you for their heroism. I urge you, avoid Triel, as it’s where these cultists came from." He casts find steed and calls his faithful warhorse to his side. He smiles upon you all and says that he will find a way to help them if they ever find him in Elturel.
However, you can hear the faint hum of magic growing stronger from the stones. Something is opening a portal!
When the material world was born, so were its two siblings the dark Shadowfell and the bright Feywild. The Shadowfell is a dimension where nearly everything is black or colorless. This shadow plane is the opposite of the Feywild, a place where darkness consumes the light and the sky is bleak and dim. The Shadowfell is a dark echo of the material world, touching it in places of gloom, death and deep shadow, called Shadow Crossings. When the material world and Shadowfell share familiar landmarks, those on the shadow side appear as twisted and warped copies. The plane is not fully evil, but those who inhabit the Shadowfell generally are drawn to the darkness.
The Raven Queen, the Goddess of death, spinner of fate and patron of winter has made the Shadowfell her home, leaving behind the plane of her predecessor Nerull. Her true domain is in the midst of the cold mountains of Letherna. On top of a steep mountain overlooking the surroundings is her home known as Fate’s Palace. She decides the end of every being within the realms, excluding the Ancient Ones. She is the one who cuts the thread of life but there are those who defy her by choosing the path of undeath. Once a creature dies and his/her/its soul enters the Shadowfell for the next journey, the Shadar-kai are the first to greet them.
Ages spent in the Shadowfell have shaped the Shadar-kai into a people that live passionately and fearlessly, to combat the apathy and gloom of their home plane. Shadar-kai society is meritocratic and based on power and prestige of great deeds. This prestige, however, has managed to escape the grasp of our glum adventurer, Persephone Witherstone.
Most Shadar-kai do not fear death and live for the moment, or risk succumbing to ennui and fading out of existence, experimenting in all sorts of stimulation and extremes. Cursed with an infinite memory in terms of longevity, Persephone is greyed out and joyless. There’s not really a point to learning or remembering when everything is going to be the same dull experience regardless.
That dullness, by the way, is the Raven Queen's Curse. Anything that Persephone can do to feel something and add emotional color to her existence is getting out from under the curse, and the tragedy of her existence is that the experience is always temporary.
Persephone Witherstone, having lived a thousand lives, is stuck in this rut of absurdism. Marooned in a repeating cycle of boring desk jobs, endless dictation of upper management memos and edicts, she yearns for adventure beyond the gloomy gates of the Shadowfell. Much to her surprise, her first glimmer of hope in a thousand years made its appearance one day, in the form of a standard inter-office scroll. Addressed to the Raven Queen herself from an outer planar explorer, the memo described signs that Bhaal, the God of Murder (and a consort of the Raven Queen), was making plans to leave Gehenna and vacation in Avernus. The memo was a request for the Queen to send a viceregal representative to ascertain whether or not this was true, and if so, to represent the Queen in Bhaal’s court.
Forging her managers signature, Persephone appended a small note to the bottom of the memo: “The Office of Shadowfell Human Resources hereby assigns Agent Persephone Witherstone as Vicegerent of Shadowfell.”
With a blinding flash of choking black light, a figure appears and floats gently down to the ground in the middle of the cultist shrine. A murder of crows suddenly appears, and flies away in a flurry of activity, cawing a raucous cacophony. The woman who appears in your midst appears quite young, but she has an aura of gloom, sadness, and depression which really dampens everyone's excitement of winning the recent battle.
"Oh fiddlesticks! Didn't mean to make such a shocking entrance, ya'll. Mi name is Persephone. Persephone Witherstone. Is this Avernus? I'm looking to head there, but this is my first time using the Queen's portals, and I got a little discombobulated and think I took the wrong one."
Amelia stows away her shield and sword and rushes over to Corrin's side, kneeling down to see if she had gotten hurt in any way, shape, or form. The tiefling girl whines a little, "Moooom, I'm fiiiine! Jill protected me! No cuts or bruises!" The blonde gives a sigh of relief, looking over to Jill, "Thank you for looking out for her." Before giving a swift lick to her thumb to wipe away from dirt that got on Corrin's cheek. "Moooom!"
The two barely noticed the newcomer till she spoke out loud, Amelia turning around to face her and keeping Corrin at a distance. "Er... No. You took the wrong portal. We're, uh, heading to Baldur's Gate."
