Donavich's expression saddens. "A little over a year ago, a wizard in black robes came to this land and stirred up the villagers to revolt against the devil Strahd. My son joined them. All of them were slaughtered, and my son was returned to me, turned into a spawn of the devil Strahd. I managed to trap him in the undercroft and have kept him there every day while I pray for the Morninglord to restore him. He cries out in hunger from time to time, but he will not hurt a soul as long as he remains in the undercroft and undisturbed. Now shall I bury the Burgomaster for you?" "Yes, Father." The priest leads you out into the cemetery, where a plot is ready for the Burgomaster's body to be lowered. Donavich says some words, asking the Morninglord to deliver his soul while you lay the coffin into the ground.

Hadrian's countenance grows dark, and he broods over the ceremony. After the burial, he asks, "Father Donavich, what is the nature of your son's...affliction? You say he is a spawn of Strahd. You make it sound like he now serves this Strahd—is that the case?"
"He thirsts for blood, but he does not serve Strahd. I'm keeping him sealed up in the undercroft so that he does not hurt anyone in his state, there is really nothing to worry about! I am sure that in due time the Morninglord will restore him!"

"You've been trying for a year without luck, I think your son is gone," Elyse says sharply, before softening a bit. For the first time she looks directly at him with a hint of sadness in her eyes and says "Believe me, your son doesn't want to live as a monster. Let us put an end to his suffering."
"No. My faith is strong, I will continue to pray to the Morninglord for my sons revival. He's a young man, his entire life is ahead of him." Donavich has a fervent look in his eyes and he clearly believes that if he continues to pray as fiercely as possible, he'll get his son back. "The journey to Vallaki is long and the five of you appear to have gone through an ordeal. Stay the night here, so that you may regain your strength without being attacked by the servants of the devil Strahd." He says, half out of genuine concern and half out of trying to bargain with you to stay your blade.
Enialis sighs and says, “It’s a waste of time. Let this man pry for his son. We should bury this body and then, if the church is safe, maybe stay here for the night and start our trek tomorrow.”
Fae gives the man a bright smile. "Thank you for offering to let us stay the night," she says sincerely. "I don't know your Morninglord, but I'm sure that he'll help you and your son soon!" Without asking, she gives the man a tight hug.
"I don't like it," says Hadrian, when we are out of earshot of the priest. "I admire the man's faith, but it is clearly misplaced. The church is not safe while that monster is locked underneath it."
"I agree, Hadrian, nobody in this town is safe. The next time we hear a scream we should follow the sound to its source and take care of the problem ourselves."
Fae crosses her arms. "I think he's being a sweet, good father. What if it was your father? Or brother? Would you just kill him? He has hope, and that's more important than anything." She pushes out her lip. "He's just different. I'm not helping you kill some innocent boy because he got attacked by a vampire."
"That 'boy' sounded like a grown man to me," says Hadrian. (Making an assumption—lemme know if this wasn't the case)
"And anyway, his affliction is obviously one that can be spread, if he contracted it from Strahd. Perhaps one day, if I find enough favor with Kelemvor, I will have the power to cure such a curse." His manner softens for a moment, but then returns to the grim resolve he'd had before. "But as it is, I cannot simply stand by while such an unnatural, dangerous creature lurks, awaiting its chance to escape and consume innocent blood."
"Fae, you don't understand. The boy is gone, this vampire they call Strahd eliminated him and left behind the thing we hear screaming. You hear that screaming, don't you? That thing is in pain and we can put an end to that, while making this town safer. This will be mercy."
(Fae is just calling him a boy because it's the descriptor she decided to assign to him, lol. His age doesn't matter in the slightest)
Fae crosses her arms. "He was trying to do the right thing and defend his village, and all you can think about is killing him," she says angrily. "He deserves your hope and belief, not your blades."
Enialis lets out a giant sigh as he says, "To go out of the way to kill him when he's already contained is, " He then lets out a giant sigh as continues with, "Such a drag." He then rubs the back of his neck as he adds, "We're staying here anyways. So lets not kill the hosts son. That's common elf hospitatility. I hope all of you here would share the same common practices."

"Fae!" Fae introduces herself with a massive grin and absolutely no trace of composure or deference. "What's up with the creepy noise?"

"Enialis." Is all the winter elf offers as he broods about.
Elyse's hand instinctually goes toward her glaive. "What was that scream?"

(The five of you would be able to deduce that Donavich's son is an adult, seeing as he took up arms and participated in a rebellion against Strahd.)
