The flame moves silently through the air and the smoke, catching Kobold Two unawares as it is focused upon celebrating its strike on Elspeth. The holy flame is enough; the Kobold seems to have the life sucked from it, and it collapses, unmoving. Kobold Two is dead.
Raider One is shocked by his fellow's sudden death, but doesn't seem to realise that this leaves him outnumbered. He moves in to attack Soar, seemingly confident of victory.
Attack: 4 Damage: 6
It's a clumsy miss; perhaps the smoke is getting to him, but he doesn't even come close to hitting the paladin.
E: Soar is up. Elspeth and Breena can also post if they wish, as they will be at the top of the next round.
In the past hours, and the battles you've fought, there have been times when it felt as if the luck was relentlessly against you, as every strike of your enemy landed, and every attack you attempted fell just short. That seems no longer to be the case; perhaps Kelemvor's gaze has fallen upon you and he is not ready to take the souls within this cathedral. Your warhammer comes crashing down on the raider's head, and he falls down to the ground, dead.
Round Two
A: Elspeth and Breena, in any order. B: Kobold One C: Jalt and Soar, in any order.
A: Elspeth and Breena are up. The only remaining enemy is Kobold One.
Elspeth gasps with pain when the stone hits her, hand automatically going up to touch the graze beofre refocusing on the remaining Kobold and slinging another stone at the creature.
Still in some pain from her wound, Elspeth stumbles as she slings her stone, and you hear it strike the cathedral wall and tumble to the ground.
Breena's arrow, however, finds its mark, shooting the kobold through the chest. It gives a little yip of surprise, but even that is cut short as it slumps to the ground, twitching for a moment but then falling still.
Combat is over.
You stand near the rear door of the Cathedral of Chauntea. The door itself is large, wooden, heavy-looking and very firmly closed. There is still burning straw and other bits and pieces of flammable material next to it, producing a fair amount of smoke; some smoke is getting into the cathedral under the doors, but most is escaping into the night. It's not a pleasant smell, and the smoke is overpowering when you get close, making it hard not to choke.
You finished your battle quickly; the group that is moving around the temple should not return to see you for a few minutes; it's easy to know where they are because they are still shouting and laughing, taunting the people trapped inside the building. The light of the burning straw is enough to make the surroundings visible, but you're still in the middle of a very dark night. You don't hear anything from inside the temple.
The moment the last Kobold dropped, Elspeth strids forwards to the doors of the temple, pausing temporarily only when the smell of the acrid smoke provoked a coughing fit. At the door, she turned, directing a scowl at the dead cultists.
"These guys have some nerve, attacking a temple of Chauntea."She mutters to herself, under her breath.
She then turns back, pushing the door to the temple, gently, hoping not to make too much noise so they continue to go unobserved.
Elspeth, the way to the door is blocked by piles of burning straw; you would take fire damage if you simply walked up to it. You could do so, or perhaps find a way to extinguish the flames.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Soar takes her shield off and uses it to sweep the burning straw to the side, away from the wooden door.
She moves back to the door and puts her head close.
"Brother Eadyan? My name is Soar Jestalle, my friends and I are here to rescue you. The Governor and Escobar sent us here from the keep and we can get you all back there. Can you open the door quickly so we can come inside and the very soon we'll all leave this before the front door falls in?" Soar speaks quickly and quietly through the door crack.
(Persuasion: 18... she will look to her friends to help if she can to get advantage on her attempt.)
Soar, make an Athletics check to clear away the burning straw without taking any damage. You can roll with advantage, as I assume at least one of the others will help.
Elspeth and Jalt do their best to assist, and in a minute or two, Soar is able to clear away the straw or otherwise dampen and stamp out the fire.
Elspeth, you move to lean upon the door, and gently push it. It holds firm; it is locked or barred or both, and does not move.
Soar, there is no response to your words. You wait a moment. Still nothing. Elspeth and Soar, if you are right next to the door, you can make a Perception check.
As she is sweeping the straw away, Soar will look for windows, and as soon as she finishes and speaks through the gap (perhaps the one on the floor through which the smoke was flowing) she will listen for any sound at all. She is going as quickly as she can because she doesn't want the other group to get there before they are inside. She will knock softly and then if there is no response, knock louder.
Perception20
She'll turn to her friends and ask if anyone has a magical solution or if she should just bust open the door...
Soar, you listen to the door and peek through the window; the window is stained and a beautiful ruby red, but not really helping you to see the interior of the church all that much. Nevertheless, you get the sense that people are staying away from the door that was previously the source of smoke entering, and that perhaps no-one heard your knocking.
You knock louder.
You wait.
You hear the group of raiders making its slow, twistedly joyful way around the cathedral. They are not close, but time is limited. And although you haven't heard it in a minute or so, now you hear once again:
Thump.
The battering ram at the front door. It's hard to know just from the sound, but the front doors which sounded very solid a while ago, sound just a little less solid now.
You hear a voice from behind the door. Who's there?
Soar, you hear nothing for a few seconds, then the sound of much activity as the bars and bolts sealing the door are removed. Finally, the door opens very tentatively, and a man looks through the gap at you all. He takes in what he sees, gasps in relief, and opens the door wide enough for you all to enter. Come in, come in, hurry, we must close again. The Goddess preserve us, but come in, please! There is urgency, even a hint of panic in his voice, and as he speaks he looks left and right as though he expects raiders to leap out of the shadows at any moment.
Jalt lets the others enter before him and lends a hand closing the door. He quickly turns his attention to the people inside Brother Eadyan? I am Jalt Rhogar, of the Platinum Cadre. Priest of Bahamut. Friend to those who serve Chauntea. There is no need to fear further, we have come to assist you.He kneels and places his hand over the holy symbol on his scapular.

Welcome, welcome. Um, no. That is to say, welcome you certainly are, my friend, as are all who serve Bahamut. Welcome here indeed. But also, no, I am not Eadyan. He is... there. As he has been babbling all this, the man - apparently a cleric of Chauntea from his dress - has been ushering you into the cathedral, and now he and another few bystanders seal the door again.
You stand in the Temple of Chauntea. It is beautful, with coloured stained glass reflecting the lanterns and torches the people inside are holding, so that multi-coloured lights flicker and dance across all the walls. In the daylight, it must be truly magnificent. But now, in the darkness and terror of the raider's attack, the colourful lights dance across the faces of terrified farmers and townsfolk huddling together in families or other small groups, some standing, some slumped on the floor, a few tending the wounded. There are perhaps three dozen people here.
Thump. The front door rattles once again.
A half-elven man walks up to you; as the cleric you met at the back door was nervous and afraid, this half-elf is serene, confident and calm. Good day to you. I am Brother Eadyan. I wish I could welcome you under better circumstances. He leads you over to one side of the cathedral, away from most ears. Tell me, have you a way for us to escape these attackers?
