"Brother Eadyan, I am Soar, a paladin of Kelemvor,"she says, trying to project calm urgency into her voice. "We just came from the keep through a secret tunnel with an entrance by the river. It's locked, but we have the key. That battering ram will eventually win out over the door, so we don't have much time. We got rid of the group trying to smoke you out before we entered, but there's another larger jeering group perambulating the cathedral in addition to the jerks with the battering ram. Can everyone here walk about 250 feet, or be carried by someone strong, quietly? We may have a distraction that can help us. But distraction or not, this will be a fighting retreat, hopefully with the four of us and anyone here who can fight between your flock and these dopey murderers. Plan is, as quickly as possible, we open the back door, scurry quietly out and to the river and safety."
(Just so I have this right, the place we agreed upon for the bonfire signal, that's between the cathedral and the keep, and we told them to fire upon the largest group of meanies they see. If the people in the cathedral run from the back door to the river, and we light up the bonfire, are they going to be in the line of fire? Is there a way to run to make sure the church refugees stay out of sight from the keep's arrows AND the cultists? I'm not sure where things are and what we've seen on our dash from the river to the cathedral.)
(Based on what you discussed, the archers at the keep will fire at anyone near where Elspeth casts her Create Bonfire cantrip. No, the people fleeing the church towards the river bank and then towards the keep would not be in the direct line of fire. There's no guarantee that the raiders won't spot them, but if you can convince the fleeing people to be quiet, it might work. There would be a lot of elements to making this happen...)
"So the plan is, wait until this mob turns the corner, quiet all the people making them ready for a scurry, open the door, scurry to the riverbank, head back to the keep to the opening we'll show you, unlock it, get everyone inside, and lock up behind us,"Soar says to him, but calmly and strongly enough to the surrounding people so they can understand what's about to happen. "We'll be safe behind strong walls, and men and women with very sharp weapons pointing at the jerks. Along the way, if the jerks decide to try to stop us, I'll tell them to piss off."
She hoists her warhammer menacingly, with an ebullient smile radiating across her face.
"Think we can go in about twenty seconds? As soon as this mob moves around the corner away from us?"
Eadyan nods, but also sounds a note of caution. It can be done, but these folks are terrified. Some are wounded, and cannot travel easily. I believe we have enough able hands to execute your plan but not...
Thump. This time the shaking of the door's fixtures is unmistakable; it will not hold long.
But not easily. I will do my best to gather them, but could use your assistance.
(We'll treat this as a skill challenge. At the moment, you are in the cathedral, and need to get all the townsfolk ready to carry out your plan. Some are wounded, most are terrified, and there are elderly folk and children as well. I'd like each of you to suggest one way in which your character assists in this effort. The skill challenge will have a few stages, including distracting the raiders etc., but we'll leave that for later. This is stage one, getting the people ready.)
Rather unnerved by the crowded interior of the otherwise beautiful temple, Elspeth shuffles a little closer to her companions.
"We'll do the best we can to help, but we can’t wait for long.” She pointed out, trying to keep the urgency out of her voice. “I don’t know what we can do to hold the raiders off. I can help clean up the wounded, make it easier for them to be moved. Soar, maybe help try calming them down? Make it obvious that the cathedral is far more dangeorus than a trip to the keep.”
She looks around, at all of the splendor within the temple. On a good day, she would have stopped to really appreciate all of this.
"We must be able to use all of this somehow. Makeshift crutches, and the like."
Elspeth, you help tend to the wounded, and use what knowledge you have to form makeshift crutches to help the least mobile in their escape. Make a Medicine check.
She approaches the group, and speaks out in an easy, bright, calming voice.
"Hi! I'm Soar, a paladin of Kelemvor. My friends and I just got to Greenest this afternoon with Jasa's merchant caravan, who we left safely outside town. We've been fighting off these jerks all night, and came from the keep, which is still very secure, to come to help you to safety. Governor Nighthill sent us. There's a secret tunnel into the keep, which we'll take you all to, following the riverbank. The cathedral's not going to be safe for very long -- that pounding on the door will knock it down. But we can leave, right now, if you'll all ready yourselves. We'll protect you from these dragon weirdos. Any of them try to stop us, they've got me to deal with. And my friends."
She raises her warhammer and puts on a scary face briefly, followed by a smile, directed at any kids she sees.
"If you can't walk easily, someone can help you. Everyone ready? We'll need to go as quietly as we can to give us the best chance, as soon as this group with the torches turn the corner. Everyone ready? You're all so strong. I could not be more confident in all of you. We can do this!"
Jalt walks over to Brother Eaydan and places his right hand on his shoulder and his left arm on his holy symbol on his scapular Kwi Jennu Bahamu Vur Chauntea. He catches himself for a second, and gives a slight apologetic look to everyone around Brother Eaydan Oh great Bahamut and Chauntea, give us the strength and the courage to find guidance and safety through the dark of this night. Protect those who do good, who worship you and seek your honor. Light their path to the keep, shield them from danger and show them that their faith in you is not unheard.
He looks to those who have gathered. The glory of your god has brought you to this cathedral to be safe, to be found by us. Let the glory of mine, assist us in getting you back to the keep.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
Jalt, as you pray, you feel as you have felt many times before, the comforting sense that Bahamut is with you. You hope that his guidane and strength will pass through you and into the crowd of fearful folk who look on. Make a Religion or Performance check.
Soar and Jalt, these are simple but pious folk - as you might expect, since they sought shelter in a temple - and they are lifted by your encouraging words. However, your speeches did take quite a while:
Thump! And with it, a very very slight sound of crack. You are running out of time.
Soar has been keeping track of where she hears the jeers and sees the torchlight of the roving band, where is it right as she and Jalt finish talking? She'll dash to the door and get ready to time opening it when the band's just turned the corner out of sight.
She looks to Elspeth and Breena, who can see in the dark, to lead the group from the cathedral, quietly and out of sight, along the riverbank to the secret door. Whoever wants to lead the group, she hands them the big key.
She's ready to, as soon as she opens the door, gently push each refugee through the door with an encouraging smile and a finger to her lips. She's keeping an eye on the big door, and says, "can anyone make it hard to see from that door through the cathedral to this door? Elspeth maybe a quick bonfire just inside the big door to distract them if they burst in?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

As Jalt and Soar convinced the villagers to move on, Elspeth spent her time near the back of the crowd, tearing makeshift bandages and splints from whatever is available to her. It's not teh most idea environment, and the atmosphere is stifling, but she does the best she can.
“Fires? No problem.”She replies to Soar, and, making sure that there is no one remaining near the main entry, casts create bonfire on the ground near the door to stall the raiders if they come rushing in..
‘Let me know when you’re ready to send off a signal, and where exactly you want that signal to be. I suppose I should be on the flanks, so I can set off the signal, but if you want me near the front that’s fine.”
"Not to worry, friends, we'll get you all squared away in just a few minutes. This will be a great story to tell your grandkids one day!" Once they're ready to go, Breena will take the lead using her dark vision and memory for geography to lead the group in the most advantageous route back to the passage.
