Once you head toward the arena, Lucia says, "You know, I think I'll wait outside. I'm a cop and I'm not too confident that they won't pit me against the champ right away so I'd just stay out here and make sure my limbs remain attached to my body." Lucia will not be entering the arena.
Once you get ready, the woman running the arena explains the rules in great detail (I'm going to only explain the mechanics).
There are two types of battles you can take part in: Regular and Challenge. The Regular fights take place in even ground and there are no special traps or weapons on the field for anyone to use. However the audience get more agitated easily and act like a separate entity on initiative 20. Hidden rolls will determine whether what they do is in your favor or in your opponents.
The Challenge fights don't have audience participation but the arena is moddled to effect how the fight goes (Darkness, traps, special architecture etc).
In both cases, opponents you face is in the form of a ladder. You can keep going for as long as you feel like but it is recommended to stop after every fight and call it a night. As you climb the ladder, harder and harder opponents will show up but the rewards will also be better. Challenge and Regular both have separate ladders so if you do only one and then do the other, your first opponent will be pathetically easy. The only exception to this rule is at the top where your opponent will be the Champ herself.
There are 2 ways to die in the arena: Take damage that puts you at negative max HP or lose a Performance contest. Basically, when you hit 0 HP, instead of doing death saves, you get in to a "Mortal Kombat dizzy state" and you have to make performance checks Vs opponent's passive Performance. 3 failures means the crowd wants blood and the opponent finishes you. 3 successes mean you survive. A nat20 counts as an instant survive. Again, the only exception to this rule is the final opponent (Champ) where she will kill you if you hit 0 HP.
You can enter each of your party members (Max 4) into the arena. They will all have separate battles. In this situation, you can either take control of their character in combat (Though what they say is still up to me if they are DMPCs) or you can let dice decide their fate. If you chose to not control your DMPCs, a d100 will be rolled and if they get below a certain number, they lost. The number will be determined by how easy or hard the fight is. DMPCs can't fight the champ. Some DMPCs (Like Lucia) will refuse to enter the arena.
Now make necessary decisions like what format to fight in and who are going to fight and if you will control them or not.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Okay so forgive me if I seem a bit sloppy. I had a blue screen of death and had to install a new windows. Now I'm trying to install MS Word, MS Access etc. So if things seem off, it's because I can't access my important notes)
As the three of you step through a marble door that is supposed to lead to an arena, you realize something. The arena building itself looks like a small 3 storied tavern. However, the gate in the basement actually leads to a Demi-Plane, making it possible to have large elaborate battlefields in such a small space. (The fights are taking place at different times but for simplicity, I'm running them together as far as mechanics is concerned. All three battlefields look the same)
The arena is a flat circular ground that has a diameter of 360ft. There is a white line painted on the ground that splits the arena into left and right areas. Each opponent starts 30ft away from the center line (60ft away from each other). The announcer announces, "Today we have two lovely ladies returning for a 2nd crack at the arena. And they brought a little friend! Joining them is a 16 year old paladin of golden hair. Last time Tomoe and Brown Fox where here, they demolished the competition and took down King. Now they are back not with a specific target but to see if they can survive the arena.
Tomoe:
" Tomoe, the princess from the far eastern lands of Edo will be going up against the fan favorite newbie: Gunther! Will the warrior princess be able to stand up to the swift half-ling's knife attacks and stick the small man or will she find herself overwhelmed by the flurry of blades?
Kate:
"Brown Fox, the Tan tank-top barbarian with a big-ass sword will find herself going up against Tinfoil Merc. Her big sword and brute strength did a number on King but will her blade fail against the Tinfoil Merc's armor or will he find himself opened like a can?
Ingrid:
"Finally, our newest contestant and the youngest of the trio, Emi will be facing off against Red Guard. With both fighters being a spear-and-shield warrior, may the sharpest pokey-stick win!
General (Again):
"With the introductions out of the way, place your bets and let the bloodshed begin!"
DM: Though I'm running all 3 battles at once, in terms of narrative, first is Ingrid's fight, then Tomoe and then Kate. Remember: No healing potions.
You won initiative. Ingrid, Tomoe and Kate's turn. The crowd (Initiative 20) can't act before anyone does anything. It will do shit starting next round.
Tomoe starts the fight with her crossbow, she launches a bolt at her opponent.
Attack: 24 Damage: 13
She then backs away, keeping her distance.
Ingrid casts sheild of faith, magically bolstering her defense, and makes her way towards her opponent.
Kate makes a seeming mad dash to her foe, but the experiance Merc is still a bit cautious. She rages, but stops part way to her foe and patiantly readys an attack for when her foe gets close.

Ingrid:
The Red Guard is a cautious type he falls back 60ft and tries to play to the crowd's sensibilities. It works and the crowd is worked up into a Frenzy. They toss what appears to be a harmless bottle at first. It manages to pass through Ingrid's defenses and then it explodes into a ball of fire. Ingrid screams as the liquid inside the bottle sticks to her and continues to burn. Shards of Glass from the explosion cut her eyes and makes Ingrid's world go red and Blurry. She can't see the Red Guard anymore. The crowd laughs at her pain. In spite of that though, Ingrid manages to hold her focus on the spell. Too bad it's not going to save her from the fire on her body.
Kate:
Tinfoil Merc rushes Kate like an idiot. Kate effortlessly avoids the charging attack. "Really? That's what you're going to do?" The crowd boos the merc and he gets demoralized. His lack of morale will have an effect on his next attack. (Bane Effect)
