So Darion wouldn't have rolled the luck, sadly so gets 14!
As they go about learning how to sail, Darion perks up a lot, the fresh lake air helping clear his hangover. He will enjoy learning something new, and asks a lot of questions around the tasks they are given, trying to learn as much as he can about sailing. He is really happy about the thought of not having to traipse through the jungle again.

Elia: 7
Rawk takes the first turn at sailing and appears to be a natural sailor thanks to her strength despite her small stature. Kellar looks on with admiration and a bit of surprise at how easily she manages to board and grasp the small details of control and quickness needed for controlling the catamaran. You watch as she uses her flight to quickly pull the sail and guide the ship with her strength in a small loop by the harbor. Ellis follows behind and though he struggles to control the heavy boom and sail, he is able to safely execute some of the orders from Kellar. The constant motion and balance throw Ellis off a bit but he is able to safely guide the vessel back to the harbor with a bit of assistance from Kellar.
Erro nimbly hops aboard and unties Ellis' knot. He follows Kellar's instructions flawlessly allowing gravity and the wind to his advantage in maneuvering the vessel. With cat like speed he quickly pulls and ties down the sail before grasping the rudder and steering the craft with such execution that Kellar has nothing negative to say as Elia takes her turn. It's a rough start for Elia, who slips on the dock and nearly tumbles into the lake. Sailing seems wholly unfamiliar to her and at one point the sail knocks her into the water. After about 5 minutes of trying, Kellar takes the helm and guides the catamaran back to the harbor. Darion boards pensively after witnessing Elia's abysmal attempt and uses his intelligence to aid his efforts. His enthusiasm for learning pays off and he is able to successfully execute Kellar's orders and maneuver around the catamaran without losing his balance.
Darion- you can add half your proficiency bonus to a sailing roll with this vessel. Rawk and Erro- you can add your whole proficiency bonus to a sailing roll with this vessel.
Kellar looks over the group and nods to himself. "You will all do fine. Just remember to help one another as much as you can and always be aware of what's going on around you. If there is nothing left you'd like to do here, we should be going now." he says looking expectantly out across the lake.
(Need two people to roll a sailing check and need a perception check from the other two.)
Darion is impressed with Rawk and Erro's handling of the ship, and by the time they are all back to shore all trace of his hangover seems gone - in fact he is in better spirits than he has been in days. "I suggest I take lookout - you two were amazing!" he enthuses. He will check on Elia, amused but genuinely sympathetic to her plight trying to control the ship. He will also send Robyn up and scouting as per normal.
Darion perception: 2, as they were warned this could be dangerous, if his roll is less than 10 he will use a lucky roll and take the highest number: 10
“My great, great, great grandmother was part-tabaxi they say!” Erro feels confident. Perhaps this would be the end of his long parade of botched maneuvers.

Ellis saw how good Darion, Rawk, and Erro were at the sailing; amazed by Erro and Rawk really. He felt bad for Elia as she had tried her best. He nodded back to Kellar, thinking as he had heard Darion. "I'll help with lookout too. You two were so good with sailing after all." Ellis would say back, smiling at Rawk and Erro before helping out Darion with keeping an eye out. Hopefully they can get across this lake quickly enough without any trouble.
(@ Rawk-Yes, sailing will be either Dex or Strength. )
You gather your things and set off, placing your bags in covered wooden compartments of the canoes, and settle in for the long journey. Kellar takes the helm guiding you out of the harbor and plotting the course with Erro. Two of you sit in the right canoe and two on the left while Kellar and Erro stand on the center platform. The canoes are long enough that you can stretch out your legs and with some slight effort lie down only partially curled up. Four short wooden oars and a single long oar are strapped to the center deck and Kellar points to them saying, "These will help us expedite our travel but you must work together as a team. Unless you are paddling, these must always be secured to the deck. They are our only way to travel if the sail rips." He unstraps the short oars and hands them carefully to each of you except Rawk saying, "Work together in rhythm like so." Then he begins to mime rowing in a smooth leisure pace making eye contact with each of you before handing the fourth oar to Rawk. "On my signal." he says "Row.....Row....Row..." You each begin to row and feel the small spray of water from your oars as you dip them in and push the catamaran forward. While you each have a decent knowledge of how to row, rowing in synchronization is a bit different, but thanks to Erro and Kellar's guidance, you quickly grasp the concept and speed the light craft across the water.
While you row, Erro follows the instructions of Kellar who instructs him to stay within 300 feet of the shore before he takes a moment to sit and observe. Overhead, Robyn soars with keen eyes on the vast expanse of water and shoreline. The first hour passes by uneventfully and though the shoreline is occasionally inhabited by pods of beasts you drift by without issue. Kellar observes your progress charting your path mentally before saying, "Continue on course along the shore. Wake me should you change hands. You can cease from rowing for an hour. Make sure you secure the oars then return to rowing taking it in hour long shifts." He moves to the front of the deck and pulls out a thin bedroll from his pack and sets it out on the deck. Using a rope and thin leather hide he makes a small canopy to shade his upper torso and quickly falls asleep. Robyn spots a few schools of fish nearby as you glide along the lake and about a quarter mile north she just catches the glimpse of a large splash from a creature or creatures eating or fighting.
As the day passes beyond midday you look back and can just make out the walls of the village in the distance. You take a moment to relax and look around taking in the natural beauty of the lake with the jungle surrounding it. The vast open expanse to the north a testament to how large the lake truly is. Rawk stands and takes the helm, which is more a rudder attached to a long pole at the back of the platform and you wake Kellar. He rouses quickly glancing about and admiring your progress.
“Well done. Rawk, with our current pace we will cross in front of the river before sunset. it is very important that you stay at least 300 feet away from the shoreline. You can sail out a bit deeper but no more than 400 feet. Ellis will be your guide.” He says pointing to Ellis who sits at the front of the shore side canoe. “Wake me if any trouble arises or if the sun begins to set.” He says and confident with your progress after a few minutes he lays back down to rest slightly adjusting the rope to provide shade from the moving sun.
Hours pass as you continue your laborious tasks. Though the journey is going much quicker the heat from the sun is beginning to bake away at you. Luckily the cool breeze and abundance of cool water around allows you to manage your temperature so far. the heat on the lake creates a small layer of haze on the surface of the lake and makes it harder to tell distance. After another hour you begin to notice the lake turn and realize the catamaran seems to be picking up pace. It is then that you notice the bend in the lake... only it’s not a bend it’s the beginning of the river.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ellis watched Rawk row, thinking that they will be able to make it across quickly. He heard Kellar, nodding as he helps guide Rawk while rowing, feeling a bit hot from the sun. But then he noticed the lake turn and feeling them go faster, now seeing the bend as he realized that this is the beginning of the river! "Kellar, wake up!!" Ellis yelled loudly as he attempted to row with the others to try to stop this.
Darion grabs a paddle, glancing at the river. Deciding that they need a dose of luck, he reaches into the web of possibilities and uses his portent roll of 15 for sailing.
You begin to quickly paddle, unsure of exactly what to do. Everyone except Rawk is drenched in water as you frantically paddle. Kellar stirs from the shouts and loud splashing and looks out across the lake towards the river. Rawk begins to chirp out a rhythm, albeit a rapid one, and you start to settle in. Ellis helps Erro catch up to the pace while Darion calms Elia who seems to be slapping the water more than rowing. Kellar watches this unfold and chooses to remain mostly silent, impressed by the display of teamwork. He occasionally adds a bit of guidance telling one side to paddle a bit harder to help turn the craft, or adjusting Rawk's stance to shift the rudder to a better angle.
The mist clears slightly as you reach the center of the river and you can see now that you are roughly 100 feet from the shoreline. Rawk continues to steer and maintain the rythym while Kellar gives subtle adjustments. The catamaran is now turned diagonally facing the open lake at a 45 degree angle. Your muscles burn and sweat drips from your head. You feel the current of the river pulling against you every time the paddle enters the water. You struggle and fight the current for about 20 minutes feeling it strengthen and weaken as Rawk and Kellar guide you. Through hard rowing and determination you successfully manage to escape the pull from the river. "Well done everyone. Let's paddle a bit further away from shore and then we can take a moment to rest." he says looking back at the shore that is now only 30 feet away.
The river current against the boat weakens and you begin to pull away from the shore. On the shore you see a pod of duckbilled creatures that swim in and lap the water in groups while others keep watch in the mist. At the sight of your vessel two of the creatures release a high pitched honk that bellows through the air. The other creatures all lift their heads in an instant and watch as you paddle out and away. "Slow your paddles, go deeper and quieter. These creatures are dumb but very large and protective of their group. If we pass quietly by they won't attack us." Kellar says softly but firmly. You adjust and can immediately tell a difference from the animals as you begin to quietly glide by. A few minutes pass and you safely exit the view of the pod of hadrosaurs disappearing into the mist. You paddle on for another 15 minutes and exit the patch of mist and can see the shore a distant 300 feet away. Kellar nods and returns to his makeshift cot taking a moment to study the position of the sun and their location on the lake. "Take an hour to rest and cool off. Wake me when your break is over." and he falls fast asleep. The catamaran slows as you pull up your paddles and secure them. Your muscles ache and the afternoon heat and humidity makes each breath heavy as sweat falls from your body.
Rawk looks over to the others and flaps her wings a bit to provide some artificial AC. She looks over to the lake and walks to the edge of the platform to look over into the water. If she doesn't see anything dangerous she'll jump off the side and take off into the air. She'll make a couple passes around the boat and skim her body across the water to cool off then land back on the platform and exhale feeling refreshed. "Anyone want to take a dip?" she asks.
Erro lays back exhausted from that last bit of exertion. Still, better than tromping through the jungle, he supposes. Baking in the sun was nothing new to Erro, and he enjoyed the open air and sunshine, but he is wholly unacclimated to the humidity. Unless it is an obviously dangerous or suicidal idea, Erro will unironically say “yeah, that sounds nice; what’s the worst that could happen?” He’ll join in just long enough to cool off, but not to exert himself.”
Ellis is really relieved that they were able to get out of that river, sighing. Once they can finally rest, he was surprised to see Rawk and Erro go jumping into the water. He heard Erro, honestly worried that a lot could go wrong and unsure if going in the water was such a good idea. So he shook his head no to Rawk's question as he just rests in the boat, cooling off another way.

As the catamaran settles you take a short respite. Rawk and Erro immerse themselves to cool off while Elia and Ellis simply palm some water over their head. The sun continues to bake as you cool yourselves. Despite the relative danger of the lake Rawk and Erro's calm and simple method of cooling does not draw any attention. At the expiration of 10 minutes you all feel sufficiently cooled. Rawk and Erro return to the boat and you oepn the sail again to begin moving in the direction Kellar instructed. You quietly glide along the surface of the lake for another hour watching the sun begin to set. You wake Kellar who is quite appreciative of the rather talented crew he is afforded. "Thanks. After another hour of rowing you can all retire for the evening. Sailing during the night will be low but progress is progress." he says taking the helm from Rawk.
While Rawk and Erro were both able to skillfully guide the vessel, you watch with admiration the smooth and methodical way in which Kellar handles the catamaran. His movements are fluid and confident, refined over years and years of experience. The catamaran seems to float as he gently twists the rudder to find the right lane between the ripples. He begins his chanting for the row frequency. His voice calm and low. You quickly match his tempo and begin to speed across the water. The shoreline becomes dimmer as the light from the sun begins to fade and the shadows grow around the jungle. The stars begin to appear like glowing pebbles in their own giant lake and the moon rises up from the east. The air cools, still warm but much more comfortable. The sky in the west grows amber then red as the sun slowly disappears. You finish your hour of rowing and only a small sliver of sunlight remains on the horizon. You look out to the shore and see creatures, appearing more as large dark shadows, drinking from the lake. You slowly pass by and they appear unaware of your presence.
