((I agree that scene with Elia was so funny - it reminded me of sailing with my cousin. He got a new boat with nothing installed, and I was presented with a bucket. We only had one bucket. We also needed a bucket to do the washing up. I leave that to your imagination. On the same trip I also learnt the origin of the anglo-saxon expression 'p*****g in the wind', in a practical way!))
Elia stands on the platform and once again summons a sustained gentle gust that carries you off along the water. Rawk is able to keep up with Dairon and Ellis for the first hour and Erro easily guides the vessel along the water. Kellar sits and observes the teamwork and nods approvingly before retiring to rest about 20 minutes into the first hour. As you enter the second hour of rowing there's a loud snap as Rawk's oar breaks from her strenuous rowing to keep pace with Ellis and Darion. The heavy flat paddle portion of the oar slowly sinks away into the water as Rawk grabs the other oar that is strapped to the platform. She plunges the second oar into the water with frustration and you hear another SNAP as it breaks from her strength. Though he slept through the first oar break the sound of the second wakes Kellar. You all cease what you're doing and look on as Kellar stands to his feet and appears to grow frustrated. He looks out to the shore and into the jungle then back at Rawk. "We have a few options. We are roughly a third of the way there. We can continue on with the three oars we currently have. It will slow our pace, but we can probably make it there within 4 days, maybe 3 with good weather and the right wind. We can run ashore and gather the wood to make some oars. It will delay us momentarily but there is a greater risk from the jungle. Or, Rawk can use her ability to fly and gather the wood herself and bring it back. With her speed and our hampered pace, she could easily catch up."
Rawk- you can make a Dex check to salvage the paddle sections of the two oars if you want.
After seeing the oars snap like twigs, Erro is reminded once again to not get on Rawk’s bad side. “We’re already ahead of schedule, right? Perhaps we can continue on like this and hope the weather cooperates. If it doesn’t, then we can run ashore later.” Erro will not stop Rawk if she suggests flying herself to grab some lumber, as this sounds like the easiest option, but he won’t suggest it.
“I got us into this mess. Please let me get us out of it.” She chirps. Her frustration growing at her own ineptitude. She turns to Kellar and says, is there a specific kind of wood that is good for these paddles or anything I should look for in particular?”
Darion looks surprised when Rawk smashes both paddles "If you are going to try and get some replacement wood, Rawk, I could send Robyn to shadow you and make sure you are okay if you need support. But please don't take unnecessary risks, it was just an accident - bad luck, don't let your frustration make you reckless!" he cautions (to a Barbarian!!!)
Ellis was very surprised as Rawk had managed to break the oars, hearing the options. He was worried about going ashore and also just Rawk going out, thinking that they could continue on with hopefully good weather. But then he had heard her say that she would get them out of this as he sighed and nodded. "Be careful Rawk." Ellis told her, hoping that she will be okay and can catch back up to them.
"I will do my best to bring honor back to my family." she chirps puffing out her chest a bit. Breaking a tool or weapon in times of plenty would've been seen as a feat of strength but to do it in famine was shameful as it could bring death to not only yourself but your family. She knew she had to make amends. She'll wait for Kellar to give her instructions then take off into the sky and fly towards the jungle to search for the right materials.
Darion will tell Robyn to go with Rawk, and help her keep watch. If Rawk gets into trouble, Robyn is to come back and tell them if she can. Robyn will be out of range of Darion's direct ability to communicate I presume for this time, however if perception checks are needed:
Kellar looks at Rawk with an expression of respect. "Be careful. There are two kinds of oar we can make. For the first, look for straight, wide and recently fallen tree limbs or you can use your axe to fell a limb. A single limb should be at least 7 feet long and 4-6 inches wide or two smaller limbs that are at least 4 feet long and 4-6 inches wide. If you are unable to find a single limb to create two oars look for limbs that split narrowly. Using some leather strips we can wrap the gap between the split to create a flat solid surface." he says using his hands to represent the dimensions and difference in tree limbs. Rawk nods in confirmation and takes off into the air. You see her avian body glide over the water effortlessly and disappear into the jungle canopy to the south.
Rawk- make a perception check, athletics check and roll a d4.
Rawk-(due to the amount of time, you wouldn't gain a benefit from raging.) You fly into the canopy and feel the difference in heat from the shade as well as an increase in the humidity the deeper you go. You see a small pod of creatures and glide quietly overhead. It takes you about 10 minutes of searching finding a few likely candidates but you settle on one large branch that seems to have fallen recently. You chop off the small branches and cut it down to an acceptable length with your axe. Luckily the noise from the chopping doesn't draw any predators and you easily lift the long and heavy limb into the air punching through the canopy and head in the direction of the lake. As you reach the shoreline you quickly spot the sail of your vessel and fly off to rendezvous catching up quickly.
Everyone else- you watch as Rawk disappears into the jungle for a minute, 5 minutes, ten minutes... Nearly 30 minutes pass of awkward silent rowing and sailing as you look out towards the shoreline before you catch a glimpse of Rawk's form carrying a large branch of a tree. From this distance it looks like a bird carrying a twig for its nest but as Rawk gets closer you can see how large the 8 foot pole really is dwarfing Rawk's small frame. You see the thick leg muscles and talons clenched holding tightly to the tree limb. She lands and carefully sits the large branch on the catamaran's platform. Kellar looks pleased and impressed then says, "Well done. If all goes well we should be able to make four oars from this. Now if you will assist me in chopping this to a more manageable size..." Kellar points you a centered spot on the limb and steps out of the way.
Need Rawk to make another athletics check. (You could rage for this one because it is a short duration.) Also need two people to make a Survival check or have one person make it with advantage.
Ellis had waited for Rawk to get back as he rowed with everyone else. But then he was relieved as Rawk came back with a large branch, glad that she came back and with how large it was too. He hears Kellar before looking to Erro as he thinks about it. "Maybe you might know something about this sort of stuff." Ellis then said to him.
(Erro, do the Survival with advantage since yours is higher than Ellis or Darion)
You all watch as Rawk quickly chops through the tree limb with a few heavy swings. Kellar picks up one of the two limbs and begins to carve a notch in the top and bottom of the limb. he hands it over to Erro who holds it and begins to wrap the limb in a long thin leather mat that he leaves open on one side. He takes the mostly covered limb and scores it with a knife all the way down the length of the limb in line with notch at the top and bottom. Kellar unwraps and rewraps the limb to score the opposite side of the limb before placing it safely on the platform. He repeats the process with Erro and the second limb before carefully holding a single limb in place with Erro. Kellar holding the top and Erro the bottom. "Strike here, slowly and carefully. Precision is more important than power now." he says to Rawk who carefully places her axe on the notch and begins to split the limb in half with quick shallow strikes. The wood naturally cracks along the vertical line carved into it by Kellar and as Rawk reaches a third of the way in Kellar raises his hand to stop and flips the limb and restarts the process from the opposite end. Rawk again embeds her axe head into the limb following the line from the notch and by the 10th strike the limb pops and splits in half.
You marvel at the near perfectly flat inside of the limb and would assume it would make a decent oar. Kellar places the two split pieces on the platform and you begin again on the second short limb. You watch as the same process is followed meticulously and at the expiration of 20 minutes you now have four flat wooden limbs that Kellar inspects and begins to mark with his knife. "Good work. Both of you. This process is very simple but requires patience and cooperation to achieve such success." He says handing over a marked piece to Erro and Rawk. "Remove the bark and carve with this until you get to the line, like this." he runs the blade down the limb in a long shallow pass and the wood peels away smoothly. You are both familiar with whittling and while Darion, Ellis and Elia row and guide the vessel slowly along the lake Rawk and Erro set to their work.
Another couple of hours pass and you feel your hands begin to ache from the constant whittling. The sun has past the mid point and you feel the afternoon heat baking away at any exposed skin. You watch as Kellar finishes the etching pattern for all four oars and begins to whittle his own oar while simultaneously guiding the catamaran and quickly finishes the first about 30 minutes before Rawk and Erro. He waits to start the fourth until Erro takes the helm and Rawk switches places with Darion to row with her new paddle. Rawk's oar functions quite well given the circumstances but not nearly as well as the properly carved and hardened paddles. Kellar finishes the fourth paddle and carefully straps the three oars to the platform before retiring to his cot for rest. He give Erro a few directions and points him in the right direction adjusting the rudder slightly then eats a piece of dried meat and lies down fully trusting his crew. Within a few minutes Kellar is fast asleep, tired from the long night and morning's adventures. Another hour passes and it is time for a break from rowing. Your stomachs growl with hunger and Elia offers to conjure some berries or assist Rawk with fishing / cooking if you prefer heartier meals.

((Awesome job so far crispy! No worries and no rush, enjoying the fantasy boat ride. It’s a weird one... but Happy Thanksgiving! Thankful for this little ongoing diversion that we have going here to allow my mind to go somewhere else when my body is stuck social distancing at home.))
”Not bad, Rawk! If this whole adventuring thing doesn’t work out, we could start an oar-making business eh?”
((Loving the attention to detail Xtra, liking our little boat trip! And I hope those of you is the US have a good thanksgiving, despite the madness of Covid!))
Darion would hungrily tuck into the food, clearly looking tired after all that (unaccustomed) physical exercise. Still, his spirits remain buoyant as he enjoys the sailing trip. Robyn comes and flutters down next to him, and gives a, somewhat smug, squawk. Darion looks surprised "Really, you've managed to do that?"
Robyn bobs and launches into a, slightly affronted, series of screeches.
"Didn't it hurt, though, all that rearranging?" Darion asks concerned
Robyn gives what to all intents and purposes in a very gallic shrug, and coos. She then flies up and lands on Erro's shoulder, and a look of intense concentration crosses her face. A second later she makes a very smelly contribution on Erro's back. She looks very pleased with herself.
Darion comes over fascinated, poking the contribution with a stick, conversationally remarking to Erro "Look at this - I didn't even realise familiars could take on such basic characteristics of animals like this! My step-father will be fascinated by this, I've never seen his familiar do this!"
Robyn starts flying around, doing a little victory lap, then will help herself to some food. Darion then would realise that perhaps Erro is not to happy with what just happened and apologise a little shamefaced "Err, sorry about that..." and will use prestidigitation to clean it up.
As Robyn alights on his shoulder, Erro initially wears the expression, “aww, Darion, look!” as he excitedly looks towards Darion. This slowly turns to revulsion as the warm offal begins to drip down his back and his affection quickly turns into the type of swat one delivers when one realizes there is a spider on them. “Ahh! What sorcery is this!? I thought you said she couldn’t do... that!”
After getting cleaned up Erro thanks Darion while glaring at Robyn. “I’m not sure which one of you is in control here...”
“So, a step-father eh? The magicking type as well I take it?”
