Darion gives a satisfied smile as the fireball hits, and as the rest of the fight ends he turns to look at the bound Yuan-ti. At Faeler's comments, he nods in agreement "I still may be able to get something useful out of it, though."
He walks over to the Yuan-ti, staring at it "There is no need to remove the gag for this...." he touches his wand to his forehead, making an image of a stylised eye with the tip. As he completes the spell, there is a brief flare of crackling blue light that highlights the eye, before fading away.
Darion casts Detect Thoughts, and focuses his mind on the thoughts of the Yuan-ti. He will use his portent to cause it to roll a 1 on it's saving throw against the initial use of the spell as he delves as deep as he can into the creature's mind "So, what are the Yuan-ti planning?" he asks first (he chooses this broad question to try and glean as much as he can from this initial first impression). He will then ask follow up questions (I presume each round, so will roll an intelligence check for each presuming the Yuan-ti tries to break free).
1. "What do you really not want me to know?", intelligence: 6
2. "How many Yuan-ti are left?", intelligence: 19
3. "Are you planning an attack?", intelligence: 23
4. "How will you defend against us?", intelligence: 13
5. "Where are you weakest?", intelligence: 23
6. "Are the Yuan-ti loyal to Fenthasa?", intelligence: 8
The first time he rolls less than a 10 on his intelligence check, Darion will use Lucky to re-roll: 16
If the Yuan-ti beats his roll before question three, he will cast the spell again to try and continue the interrogation. If the spell is still working by the end of this, he will ask if anyone else has any questions.
When he has finished, Darion stands up with a disgusted look on his face "That was an unpleasant place to be!" he turns to the guards "I suggest we kill it now..."
Ellis was so glad that they had won the battle, leaving just this one that was tied up. He heard that they should kill it now, thinking. But then he heard Darion, watching and hearing him ask the questions. Is he reading his mind? So he waited until Darion was done, sighing as he nodded in agreement. "Being able to read minds, that seems really useful." Ellis had said to Darion, smiling.
Rawk & Erro- the tower is dimly lit from the sun above and a few arrowslits in the stone tower. you make it safely past the upper level of the tower. It appears to be mostly stairs and supports. The stairs are immediately illuminated by Erros torch and you see a mid level platform with a barrel, two crates and a few scattered weapons. What Rawk doesn’t see is the missing chunk of stair and you take a small tumble down 4 stairs before landing on the middle platform.
Make an investigation check! Either one with advantage or two straight rolls.
Darion- You cast the spell and immediately feel the hatred of the yuan-ti towards you. It wants to kill you and everyone around you. You ask your first question and as the yuan-ti goes to resist you tap its forehead again and watch the eyes glaze over from failing its save. You sense its frustration at the situation and hear Fenthasa's voice say "Attack on Dom-Eko!" as if from a memory. You follow up with question 1, his mind shifts to the temple being open to attack. You ask question 2 and he fights to resist but you shift fate and sense a number range between 80-140. You get the sense that he isn't high up in rank so he doesn't know how many are out on patrol. You ask of the yuan-ti defense and you feel the intensity of his resistance against you. The yuan-ti's eyes squint and all you sense is a repeating "Die" before the link its mind is severed. (Knowing the answer to the first question, you'd probably skip question 3 and go to question 4. Either way, the yuan-ti succeeded against the 10 and would succeed against the 5)
"What a junky tower, yeah? oh Rawk, watch your st--!" Erro winces as he sees poor Rawk tumble down the steps. Once he sees that she is okay he calls out, "Thanks for taking that one for me!"
Rawk lets out a short wimpering chirp. She quickly stands to her feet and checks over herself. Feeling only a blow to her pride she bows and hops over to the crates and equipment. "Anytime" she chirps wanting to move past what just happened.
Rawk & Erro- You find numerous daggers, two longbows, three shortswords, none of which appear to be special. You also see a couple spears and a large collection of arrows that appear to be coated in some kind of poison. You open the barrel and are immediately hit with the stench of decaying fish. You shift your focus to the crates and Rawk finds a unique looking vial of viscous liquid among the cramped supplies of nets, dried meat and rope. You continue to the second crate and find 6 vials containing a slightly different pale green liquid. You find various instruments and recognize the tools and pieces needed for making a variety of traps.
(While not as complete asa general store, there is a good amount of equipment here if you want to take some.)
Erro is interested in the liquids, though he doesn’t begin to try and figure out what they are. “Best left to eggheads, like Darion.” He will secure store the vials and bring them back to the party. Erro would also be interested in the traps and take items associated with trap building. “Lovely!”
Finally, he will also restock on arrows, taking a few of the poison-coated arrows. Who knows if it works on Yuan-ti? Either way, they could be useful against the giant beasts of this land.
Darion shakes his head, making sense of the images he had seen. He will quickly relay the summary of what he gleaned to the various leaders around, then comments "By Mystera, I pray we are not to late if they have already launched an attack... but it looks like their numbers are not great and if their temple lies exposed, perhaps we have a chance to land a blow. Still, I feel we need to get back to Dom-Gar as quickly as we can. Events may move fast..."
He calls out to Rawk and Erro "You two okay... we should move soon...."
Turning back to the leaders "Even killing these Yuan-ti, we cannot disguise the fact that we have a substantial force under arms. If we are lucky, the various predators that inhabit the jungle should soon start to feast, hiding what has happened. I suggest we spend a few minutes stripping them of their armour, weapons and such like then press on..."
Ellis hears Darion, thinking and nodding back in agreement with it all. "Yeah, we should get what we can that would help us and keep going." he said back to him as he would help with the gathering of supplies and such.
Darion & Ellis- Faelar and Arion each bare a dreadful look at the mention of an attack on another village. Elia hides her face and whispers a short prayer then quickly begins having the wolves tear into the bodies. Faelar casually walks over and slits the yuan-ti's throat. He steps away as the creature writhes in its final death throws and over the course of about 12 seconds bleeds out. "Animals don't take armor and weapons. If we want to stage an animal attack we have to leave most of it here." Elia says, her voice somewhat hoarse.
Rawk would take 10 poison arrows, a net and some additional rope. "All good. The tower is clear. There are some additional supplies up on the mid level but nothing of importance. We did find some vials of potentially poison and this vial." she says holding up the special vial and hands it over to Elia. "I agree with what Elia said. Animals don't take armor, but they do take whole bodies. If we hide a few we could take the armor off those and leave the others with armor on to the beasts."
She'll make her way closer to Ellis and Elia and whisper, "Erro took some pretty bad hits up there. He won't let onto it but he probably needs some healing."
“I’m alright, I’m alright...” Erro limps out of the tower alongside Rawk and listens to the conversation. He gestures towards the smoking craters and shrapnel of trees left by Darion’s fireballs, “I don’t think animals do that either. Let’s not spend too much time trying to cover our tracks; just enough to make them stop and wonder, and perhaps shudder.”
Darion goes over to Elia, noticing her worry, resting a hand lightly on her shoulder. He then comments "I wasn't thinking of trying to disguise this as an animal attack," he grins slightly at Erro's comment "Unless we can persuade them a dragon flew by! I was more commenting that the predators will help create some uncertainty over what happened. Let the Yuan-ti worry for once! But again, I feel we must be swift, the troops probably need a brief respite in the village, but events are moving fast. We should decide on what we are going to strike, and how, and waste no time putting the plan into effect."
Darion hasn't enough military experience to gauge the troops condition with any certainty, but he always has a preference for speed and action when dealing with an enemy.
Ellis listens to everyone, trying to think of what to do. Then he hears of how badly hurt Erro was, seeing him limp. So he goes over and casts Cure Wounds on him. "If anything, we can take some of the armor and leave the rest. But yes, we should get going soon in case reinforcements come and so we can rest once we are far away enough or at the village." he then said back to everyone.
Faelar nods in agreement with Darion and the others. "We should get underway. We have a few more wounded but thankfully none deceased. I believe the wolves and your healers are to thank for that." he says looking first to Elia and then to Arion. "Prepare to depart. Take what you need. We march in 10 minutes." Faelar shouts to the troops who chant and cheer in response.
You take the few minutes to tend to Erro who accepts but plays off his pain. The army mobilizes and you start off on the final leg of your return to Dom-Gar. The jungle fog slowly burns away leaving a slightly cool humid air behind. This coolness lasts for an hour or so before it too succumbs to the sun's heat. You continue your trek and in the last hour you see the familiar markers of Dom-Gar. You approach ever closer feeling the weight of a burden lifted as well as a small sense of dread. As you enter the more spacious farmland you begin to notice the plants have grown rapidly, some bearing fruit. You see a few villagers gathering who smile, hug one another and even shed a few joyous tears as the army group marches by.
You enter through the defenses and enter the village to find some of the homes fully restored, some in progress and still more being built. The villagers all cease their task to cheer and applaud the successful journey of their new found heroes. Still you continue to march towards the village center where you are met by chief Quirin and Seresh of the council. "Blessings and welcome heroes and friends. It appears you have been quite successful in your mission." Arion and Faelar step forward and each give a small nod followed by a handshake and embrace. "It has been too long old friend." Faelar says. Arion hugs Seresh and turns to Quirin. "You have some very talented villagers. Are we the first to arrive?"she asks.
Rawk was so excited to be back. To see her father and Tempest and the other villagers. She would look through the crowd trying to spot her father rather than pay attention to what anyone else was saying.
This was the closest place to home that Erro had had for a long time, so he was elated to be back. Erro will want to hear what is going on, and is particularly interested in seeing if the others have returned yet. However, he will be most interested in taking a load off of his feet and resting up in his newly furnished home, forgetting about danger and the jungle for at least a day.
Darion is relieved to be back in the village. He will listen to find out what else is happening, then will gratefully take the weight of his feet in their house. He will be in a thoughtful, pensive mood, not really talking much to the others - still disturbed from seeing into the Yuan-ti's mind. If needed, he will relate his findings to whoever needs to hear it, especially Quirin and Seresh.
