Darion grins slightly "Good to see my natural suspicion of the world seems to be rubbing off on you!" he glances around "Not much we can do though, than keep our eyes peeled.... I don't think Fenthasa knows about this army, at least not for certain.... and she probably doesn't know that we know about her plans. We just have to trust to luck, sometimes you just have to roll the dice and see how they fall...."
While you converse, Rawk leads the scouting party ahead through the jungle. The hours press on from light to darkness and as you approach the final hour of the march you begin to serach for a campground. Rawk flies east and finds the remains of a small pack of hadrosaurs in a large cut swathe of the jungle. It takes a few minutes for the tell-tale signs to click in her mind then a cold shudder runs through her small frame. The yuan-ti marched through this place and slaughtered the pack of hadrosaurs for food. The lack of meat on the bones makes it hard to determine the length of time but the large blood stains on the ground depict a window of 2-18 hours. Rawk returns to the army group and relays this information to the group and the leaders. "It appears they are still ahead of us and rather close. It would be unwise to cross paths with them on our way. We need to be on our guard for their scouts as well." Faelar says his brow narrowed. "Perhaps a circuitous route would be best. If we travel quickly and for a few additional hours, we should still be able to make up the difference in distance." Kurrk adds. This discovery has you all on edge and you reflexively decide to halt progress and make camp where you are to reduce the risk of running into the yuan-ti. The jungle floor is damp and scattered with vines and mushrooms. The trees are relatively close and the roots make finding a large flat section of ground difficult. Still, the army makes the best of the situation and begins to setup the camp.
While Rawk was investigating the dead animals she'd cast speak with animals and try to find any creatures that could give her more information about how long ago the yuan-ti were there.

Erro feels encouraged by Darion’s words, though the prospect of trusting luck made him uneasy. Perhaps he’d pray to Tymora, but was that any different? Erro smirks, “yes, you’re a bad influence on me, Darion. How do you always live like this?”
Hot on the heels of the Yuan-ti Erro finds it very difficult to rest, though even despite that danger and excitement halting the pace in the sweltering jungle was still a relief.
Erro will keep an eye out. He inspects the dinosaurs to see if there is anything unusual about how they were slain. Quite a large quarry.
Rawk- you find a small bird fluttering through the branches and ask if saw the attack and how long ago the yuan-ti left. It cocks its head at you curiously but chirps back a reply. You find out the yuan-ti attacked and ate the creatures about 6 hours ago. Then they left about 4 hours ago. You would know that it became dark two hours ago so if the yuan-ti are choosing to rest at night they are roughly two hours ahead of you.
Erro- Looking over the broken bones you see the marrow extracted and little to no clues of the majority of the bones. On some of the ribcage bones you find deep cuts and shatters that appear to be made from spears or arrows rather than a knife cleaning the meat off. Many of the neck bones bear similar cuts and you find a femur that appears to have the iron arrowhead still embedded in the bone. From all this you gather the herd was surprised or trapped and encircled in an ambush of multiple yuan-ti who downed each with a combination of spears and arrows.
Erro displays the arrowhead, “Well, everything seems conventional so far. They are at least not casually slinging eldritch bolts at their prey at any rate. Let us hope no surprises are in store.”
Ellis would have helped with setting up camp, nervous at how they're so close to encountering the Yuan-ti. Then he hears his friends and nods in agreement, thinking. "Yeah, we're stronger than we were even before gathering allies. So I think that we all can defeat those Yuan-ti." Ellis said back, smiling and trying to be positive about it. Surely with all their forces, they should be able to win and save Dom-Eko.
" I spoke with a bird who saw the whole thing. They attacked 6 hours ago and left 4 hours ago. If they aren't marching at night then they're only 2 hours march away from here." Rawk says. "We have a good chance of out pacing them. as long as we keep moving quickly."

Darion listens to the reports from his friends, then turns to Robyn "I need you to scout out for us, see if you can find the main body of the Yuan-ti forces." he would get the general direction they should be in, based on the direction to Dom-Eko "When you have found them, do not linger as that will arouse suspicion, do a flyby at a distance, then return here and feed back. Keep yourself safe though..."
He blows on her tummy a couple of times, then Robyn flies off in the direction indicated
(apologies all. Had two birthdays this weekend and playing catch up.)
Robyn takes off into the air disappearing into the muggy night sky as the army group finishes setting up camp. You watch as Darion sits and his eyes suddenly roll back in his head while he connects to his familiar. He relays his view as Robyn soars through the branches heading west towards Dom-Eko. Robyn stays roughly 100 feet in the air, her vision like that of a prehistoric owl, accustomed to the darkness. It takes about an hour before Robyn picks up on the yuan-ti's track through the jungle. Once on it she follows it another 20-30 minutes and comes upon their camp. Rather than tents or canopies the yuan-ti sit or lie on the ground in the elements scattered across nearly 500 feet of ground. Robyn takes a swooping glance and perches on a branch of a tree near the middle of the camp. She lingers for just a few seconds before swooping back off into the night sky. From your brief fly by you estimate there are roughly 80-150 yuan-ti.
While Darion relays this you make mental notes while also preparing to rest. Faelar and Kurrk sit nearby and eagerly listen to Darion's report. A few moments after Robyn leaves the camp Darion snaps his fingers twice and Robyn reappears on his shoulder. She gives him a quick soft nuzzle of her head in his neck and kneads his shoulder preparing to burrow into the crook of his collar bone. "If her speed is comparable to ours then that confirms the yuan-ti are only a few hours march ahead of us. If we continue our rapid pace tomorrow and head slightly north of a direct path we should be able to cut them off before they reach Dom-Eko." Kurrk says. Tempest clears his throat and adds, "In the morning I can send a message to them through a bird. ""They'll need it to prepare themselves. Even if we can get ahead of the yuan-ti they should arrive at Dom-Eko in the evening. We still don't know their plans, but we need to make sure our soldiers still have the energy to fight. That is a formidable force of yuan-ti, one that could destroy us if they caught us offguard. We should get our rest. we have a long day that awaits us." Faelar adds with a bow and heads towards his tent.
I need a d8 for the night, d12 for the day, a survival check with advantage and two perception checks.
((All good! I never find myself checking this on the weekend very often. It’s made itself to be a good workweek diversion though!))
They were so close; Erro thought that he could almost smell their stink in the air. An alien, venomous scent. He needed a rest after such a long day, but sleep wouldn’t come easy. Death was a real possibility, but never before would it have ever meant anything to those monsters. Now, though, they had a fighting chance, and he thought to himself that this is the way that he would want to go down, if it came to that.
Each of you struggle with sleep as a heavy rain descends over the course of the night. Though your tents and canopies shield you from the majority of the rain, the prolonged storm slowly waterlogs your bodies to the bone. Distant thunder and flashes of lightning periodically stir you awake and in your groggy state shapes appear in the shadows as you drift in and out of consciousness. The rain continues into the morning, though lighter than the night before and you find yourselves in the midst of a marsh. Your feet fight forward with each step as you pack your things and leave the area heading northwest to intercept the yuan-ti. You see Tempest whistle at a nearby bird and watch as he whispers in its ear before it flies off in the direction of Dom-Eko. "Hopefully it will reach them soon." Tempest says grabbing his staff and slides his pack over his shoulder. The first two hours of your march is slowed by the muddy jungle ground and on two occasions you have to rescue a small group of soldiers who get stuck in mud pits. The only ones who don't appear to struggle are Kurrk, Rawk and Robyn who effortlessly glide between the branches scouting ahead. Rawk and Kurrk stay relatively close to the group and manage to eventually lead you out of the swampy portion of the jungle.
You continue your march moving rapidly to make up for your slow start. Robyn flies high above the jungle canopy to the west and disappears. Suddenly you hear before you see her crash through the canopy and begins squawking to Darion. Darion turns to the group and says, "She's spotted the yuan-ti armies." Rawk and Kurrk are called and informed of this sighting. Upon their arrival Robyn squawks and flies up into the air. Rawk and Kurrk follow close behind and disappear beyond the canopy above. The flying trio stay out of sight for a few minutes before Kurrk pierces through the canopy and descends down to the ground in a flash of feathers. "Dom Eko is two miles away. The yuan-ti army is only a mile or so ahead to the west. Even if we travel at a sprint they will beat us to Dom-Eko."
Darion nods "However, it is likely that they will need time to set up their attack. And if Dom Eko is warned, they should be able to hold off at least the initial attacks until we arrive. Luck seems to be with us, and we haven't run into any scouts - or at least, ones that we know of. We need to to move swiftly, but not foolishly. Rawk, Kurrk, did you get a feel for they layout of the army, where the best attack may come from?"
Ellis was disappointed to hear that the Yuan-ti would still beat them to Dom-Eko until he heard Darion. "Yeah, hopefully by warning them, they can hold off the Yuan-ti until we get there and they least expect it." he said back, nodding in agreement.
Kurrk nods in agreement with Darion and Ellis' thoughts but adds a word of caution. "The jungle was too thick to determine much more than their general location. We caught glimpses in open patches but they appear to be relatively close. I agree they should want to setup for the siege but the yuan-ti are unaware of our efforts to combine forces. In their mind their forces should easily overwhelm a single village so they may rush in rather than delay to plan. If needed I can fly ahead to the village and help them raise the defenses. Rawk will be able to guide the army easily enough."
I will need a final Survival check, with advantage, to see how rapidly the group can reach Dom-Eko regardless of whether Kurrk leaves or not.
Erro would think that they should send Kurrk ahead of the village is still unaware of the impending attack. If they are already aware, thanks to Tempest, he’d sooner keep Kurrk back so as to not spoil the element of surprise.
Being able to inform Dom-Eko of our strategy would be invaluable though- that they should distract and delay as long as possible till we arrive from behind.
