Rawk's feathered form would shudder as she listened to the retelling of Dom-Sorn and look at her father with compassion knowing the subject was a tough one for him. She would instinctively take a half step towards him and release a small chirp which, to their kind meant so much despite being so little. She knew the sound would reach her father's ears and give him some sort of comfort, knowing that she , although anxious to fight, was at this moment thinking of her father's emotions and wished to remind him of her care.
Ellis listened as he talked how there is a way they can strike against the Yuan-ti now while the patrols are absent and they are divided. He spoke of how the Yuan-ti stole the Rutan's Heart 30 years ago, that it's corrupted and guarded by the Linger Shadow before speaking to Tempest of a plan. Ellis was honestly so confused, not knowing anything about the Rutan's Heart, the Lingering Shadow, or Dom-Sorn at all, glad to not be the only one as Tempest questioned it as well. He listened to the other's explanation, stunned to hear that the Yuan-ti slaughtered captives in a ritual, remembering that cave he had been in back at the temple. "Yes, I will help as well to save the heart and stop any more sacrifices from happening. How will we be helping you in this?" Ellis had said with a bow. He knew that he wasn't the best in combat, but at least could heal the others, especially since the heart is poisonous.
Erro felt it in the pit of his stomach as the chief talked about the slavers in league with the Yuan-ti. No doubt some of his own countrymen were in this league. It made him sick to think that all of those people, slowly disappeared through the night here and there, were being secretly shipped off to this place to be sacrificed. He could see how it was starting to connect. The political corruption in his own home was surely contributing to the physical corruption in this land. What greater source of sacrifices than an authoritarian regime in cahoots with the Yuan-ti?
Perhaps Erro would encounter some of his old foes doing business at this heart. Erro was pale at the thought of it, but is grounded in determination. “Here I was thinking I was running from that world... perhaps Fate has brought me here after all. There is no escaping it.”
Rawk seems to caught up in the moment to really be able to get a read on what is going on. But she gets a sense that all is not right.
Daner speaks up "I'll do anything to help you kill more of these snake people!" he hefts his plundered weapon in the air "They'll regret locking us up!"
Darion is most reserved of the group, but he to comes forward "I would help to. These monstrous creatures must be stopped!"
Quirin nods, a pleased look on his face "I admire your bravery, and though we do not have much we will try and make sure you have a just reward for all this help!"
The crowd is pleased by this, and you sense they are more behind his plan. "Are we agreed then,on this strategy?" Quirin asks. The is a shout of "aye's" from around the villagers, though you do hear a few "nays" as well - but the aye's seem to have it. Both Jaron and Kanush seem to be in the Ayes, but both look as if they have some reservations.
Quirin concludes the meeting, and he invites you to gather closer as the villagers begin to disperse. Jaron and the council join. He also beckons Rawk over
"Do not go yet, Rawk, you need to join us." At his words, you all see Rawk's father stiffen in dismay. Once you are all around, Quirin speaks again.
"You four seem to have proved yourself adept at working in the heart of the enemy. I had hoped to persuade you all to undertake the attempt to banish the Lingering Shadow." he turns to Darion "however, I understand you are a student of the Arcane arts - we have need of those skills here, to help repair our defences if you are willing. Elia can discuss this with you in more depth."
Darion looks reluctant to be separated from the group, though you would spot a gleam of interest in his eyes. Finally he nods "Whatever I can do to help."
Daner speaks up as well "I'm not really built for sneaking... I think my skills would be better served helping out the raiding parties!"
Quirin nods, perhaps reluctantly and Jaron nods in his direction "I would welcome every capable warrior into our ranks, thank you."
"So, if you three are willing?" he gestures to Erro, Tempest and Ellis "I would entrust you to this mission. However, we can not send you on your own, and one of us should accompany you."
He turns to Rawk, but before he can speak Rawk's father calls out angrily "NO! I forbid it!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Tempest will look over to Elia questioningly then look to Rawk looking back at Elia as if to silently say, "Is she capable?" with his eyebrows. At the sound of her father's voice Tempest would look into his eyes to see if his denial is from fear of losing her or fear that she is not sufficient. Tempest wasn't about to jump into a family feud but knew they would need more help if Darion and Daner were to leave them.
((yeah, take care everyone. Crazy times we are living in))
As Tempest glances at Elia, he notices she seems distracted, a hard-to-read expression on her face. However, he is unable to make much more out about Rawk's father than his obvious fear.
Erro - I'll wait and see if Ellis or Rawk want to say anything before I move onto that!
Ellis listens as everyone else agreed on this plan before the meeting ended and the villagers left. Then he was sad to hear that Darion and Daner wouldn't be coming with them, worried about if him, Tempest, and Erro would be enough for this mission. But Quirin mentioned one of them accompanying the three, looking to Rawks until he heard Rawk's father speak up against it. He felt bad and could understand why a father would not want his daughter to go out on a dangerous mission. But they really do need another person since Darion and Daner won't be with them. "Yes, we would be willing to take on the mission. But we would feel more comfortable with another person to help us out though." he had said, bowing as he looked at Rawk's father. "If you are worried about her, I will do all that I can to protect her from harm." Ellis would say to reassure him that she will be okay with them, thankful for the night's sleep as now he felt that he can actually help to the fullest.
Rawk excitedly flutters over towards the group and is quickly stopped dead in her tracks as her father speaks. She reflexively hunches her head down and looks to the others for help. She sees the glances from the others and feels a surge of emotions rushing through her. Her chest heaves deeply as she struggles internally with conflicting thoughts. She cares for her father and respects his authority but can't watch her village continue to decline when there's a chance for them to hit the yuan-ti. "Stop!" she Kaws loudly, her muscles tensing. "I must go with them. They have given us the chance to strike a fatal blow to the yuan-ti. We can't continue to watch our people be taken and our village bled to death!" she pleads tears welling to her eyes that stare through her father.
Rawk you see your father suddenly deflate in front of you, and the fear and worry cross his face. Suddenly, beneath the proud warrior, you see an old and tired man who has lived with fear and loss for too long.
"I can't bare... I can't bare the thought of losing you." he pauses for a long moment, and you can feel the tension in the air "but you are a fine warrior, and I can't selfishly hold you for ever."
Looking at the rest of the council, it is as if a great tension had suddenly been lifted. Elia in particular looks relieved, and you get the feeling she had been stealing herself for a confrontation. Instead she says, gently and kindly
"You are a great warrior, and you have become a great teacher. But there is no safety for anyone - we have all lost so much," and you hear her voice crack a little "and I can't promise you that Rawk will be safe. But if we do nothing, then in time we may all fall to the Yuan-ti plague - and more than just lives will be lost then."
Quirin moves forward "You and I have fought together for so long. Most of our friends fell long ago, and we two tired old warriors are left standing. But we are both past our prime,my friend. Time to let the younger, fitter warriors take the lead." he gestures to Jaron and Rawk.
For a long moment, Rawk's father stands there, then finally he nods, and addresses Rawk "You make me proud. I think you will make a greater warrior than I ever was. But if the council does not mind, I will take my leave for the moment. I have much to think about."
He turns and flies off. Elia says to Quirin "I will talk to him later." she turns to the group "we have little left in terms of resources, but we do have these."
She pulls out three stone vials, hands one to Rawk and two to Jaron. "These are the last of the Heart's harvest. They can heal even mortal wounds, bring someone back from the brink of death. I will have one more thing to give you, but it is probably best if I discuss that with Tempest. Suffice to say, it is a magic that should help banish the Lingering Shadow."
Quirin turns to Erro "we have little resources, but you are welcome to whatever you feel you need when you have made your plans." he turns to Darion "if you would come with me, I will show you what we need help with."
Darion turns to you all "Strange, we have known each other so little time, yet I will miss you. May Tymora's blessing always find you until we meet again." he turns, and follows Quirin into the stone building.
Jaron turns to Daner "If you would accompany me, you can join us in planning our raid."
Daner turns to you all, looks like he is about to say something, then gruffly gives a quick bow before following Jaron.
Tempest, Rawk, Ellis and Erro find themselves in the meeting place with just Elia left, the other council members muttering thanks as they take their leave.
Okay... what are you chaps going to do / talk about?
((Lillig I'm going to PM you some stuff concerning what you would know about Dom-Sorn))
Tempest will bow to Rawk and say, "Welcome. I look forward to fighting with you." then turning to Elia he says, "Yes, how can we defeat this Lingering Shadow and what is it exactly?"
Rawk still breathing heavily from the emotional toll watches her father leave. For the first time she felt vindicated and free but still felt a sharp pain in her heart at hurting her father. Tempest's statement recalls her to the conversation and she replies, "Thank you. I hope I prove worthy of being your ally. Elia will know how to defeat the Lingering Shadow, but still Dom-Sorn itself is a dangerous place. It's a rocky crescent shaped island with a cliff at the northern tip of the crescent, which also happens to be where the grove of Rutan's heart is..."
Rawk pauses racking her mind to visualize the island from her memory. A tear comes to her eye and drops to the ground as she recalls the horrible events that took place there but clears her throat and continues, her voice a soft high pitched chirp. "From what I remember, there are three possible paths we can take. Two are dangerous and one suicidal. The easiest path will take us straight through every yuan-ti patrol and alert every undead monster around. The other two paths will require some creativity and strength or dexterous movement. There's a steep jagged cliff on the northern tip that could take us up to the grove. Near the seaside of the southern edge there's an old watchtower that conceals an underground tunnel. My father used it to escape. It may be filled with water now but has the safest sea crossing to Dom-Sorn."
“Yuan-ti AND undead?” Erro exclaimed to himself. What had he gotten himself into? It didn’t matter, he knew fate had brought him here.
Erro takes a look at his group. “Well, we certainly don’t want to alert the whole island by taking the obvious route. The cave sounds promising, unless it is flooded, of course. But, if the Yuan-ti have discovered it there is presumably only one way in and one way out through the cave and we’d be caught. We have a bird woman and a spider man in this group; we appear quite nimble! Perhaps ambling up these cliffs would be our best bet. Perhaps Tempest and Rawk could hoist Ellis and me up the cliffs if we brought some climbing gear?”
Ellis was very glad to see that Rawk's father ended up agreeing to let Rawk go with them at least. He saw the stone vials, surprised to hear that those can even bring back someone from the dead, relieved that they will have something to help in case of any dire consequences. Ellis would have bowed and said goodbye to Darion and Daner, hoping to see them again. He then listens as Rawk explains Dom-Sorn and the paths they could take to get there. He knew that they couldn't alert the yuan-ti and undead, definitely not wanting to deal with those. The third path with the underground tunnel seemed like a good option as long as it wasn't flooded until Erro mentioned that the Yuan-ti might have discovered it, then they would be caught. Ellis nodded as Erro suggested that Tempest and Rawk could hoist them up the cliff if they got some climbing gear. "That does sound like the best option. I'm not strong, but I am pretty good on my feet." he would say back to everyone, thinking back to how he had managed to run across the narrow and slick stone bridge without slipping back at the temple.
Elia nods. listening to you talk. She places a hand on Rawk's shoulder "You will make your father proud, and he is a good man. But it is time for you to come out of his shadow."
She turns to the rest of you "I will leave you to gather what supplies you wish. It will take you 2 or 3 days to make Dom-Sorn, and we need to move quickly. Feel free to gather what you need from around the village. Tempest, when you and your allies have finished doing what you need to,come and find me in my Grove, and I will show you how we may be able to banish the Lingering Shadow."
She turns to the rest of you "I am not sure what the Lingering Shadow truly is. It is a servant of Dendar, a lesser Power in it's own right. The Yuan-ti where able to summon an aspect of it to our world. It is cruel, cold and utterly without mercy. It's very presence corrupts the natural world around it - Dom-Sorn is now a place of perpetual mist and shadow that reaches out into the jungle beyond."
She bows to you all "I will leave you to make your preparations" she says, and heads away from you.
((Feel free to discuss any strategy / plans in character. Let me know what equipment you think you'll need, and I'll let you know if it is available. Also, feel free to do anything else your characters would want to do before setting off out. Lillightnin, check Rawk's inventory if you haven't already :) ))
