”So, Fang, what will you do now, armed with this knowledge? Do you stay with your tribe to be their chief hunter or defender, or do you have another path in mind?” asks the Professor, curious about this lizardfolk warrior who has expressed enough interest in the outside world to learn common and interact so closely with the Travelers.

Assuming Shae could have heard this conversation between Glasses and Fang, she'll step forward clearing her throat. "If I may..." Shae will pause a moment to look between the Professor and Fang, "And perhaps I should have mentioned something earlier..." Her eyes will meet his to encourage clear communication, "The hag used this same spell on me. I can confirm the Professor's findings. It was a psychological attack made to damage one's mind. Creating a wound that's not so easily mended." Shae could even still remember how her dream felt. She'd shutter reliving the memory. Though, she hoped he could find comfort in knowing that it was as Snively said, not a prophecy.
After lunch and a quick recovery from all his identifying work, the Professor curled up with the captured spellbook against a nearby tree and started doing his research. Puffing on his pipe (not strongly enough to pull the magic out of it, though), the gnome pores through the pages attempting to extract useful magical incantations from its pages and transferring them into his own spellbook.
"Does anyone know when the Grung plan to honor their fallen warriors--or the Lizardfolk plan to honor theirs?" asks Snively, looking towards Fang as he presumed the resourceful archer had helped carry the dead to both villages.

Maxine was busy assessing her new lab and contemplating several ideas of how to change the quality of a couple existing and seemingly useless potions into something more potent. But she heard Professor: "If I remember correctly, lizardfolk honour their fallen one by eating them. Not sure we want to be the part of the ceremony. But someone has to bring our crew back, and they are with frogs. Makes sense to check up on them."
Professor, reading through the book, you find several notes on a powerful abjuration spell, which seems to negate or counter other magic. You understand a lot of the basic concepts in the notes, such as allowing the incoming magic to pass through you, while you are well grounded, as a way to dissipate the effects, or as an advanced technique, how you can sense the pattern of the other magic by being in tune with the weave, allowing you to construct a pulse of your own magical energy designed specifically to smooth out the patterns and wrinkles, and leave the weave as smooth as possible, therby allowing you to negate the effects of magic without even having to risk enduring them first. Here, you're close, but a few of the details still seem a bit shaky, and you might need to do a little more research before you can fully grasp this spell. You reckon that copying this spell with all its intricacies is going to take about six hours, once you've understood all the relevant bits.
The dusk hag's journal contains a powerful illusion spell, that allows you create hypnotic patterns of swirling colours that charm and incapacitate creatures, as they are enthralled by the strange patterns you create. The creation of the patterns seems straightforward enough for you, but you're still not quite certain you understand how to make them twist and turn in such a way as to become hynotically charming, and unfortunately, the notes here don't seem to be explicit enough. Perhaps with a bit more work, you might understand, or be able to transfer your knowledge from other magics to be able to use this spell. Once you fully understand how to work the patterns, you figure it will also take about six hours to transfer the notes and encode them in a way useful to you.
A second spell you find in the night hag's book though, you understand quite quickly and easily. Based on enchantments, this spell allows you to temporarily neutralise foes by paralizing them, holding them in place by the sheer power and complexity of the enchantment placed on them. You realise that transferring all the hag's notes on this spell will likely take you another four hours, but you understand the concepts and could start today.
Flicking through the books, you also find two rather nice evocation spells, with an odd bit of symmetry to them, although one is quite a bit more complex. The first of these allows you to create light, by touching any small object and imbuing it with energy. The incantations are beautifully simple, and you can and do transfer them in a few minutes. The other spell cancells any light, and creates magical darkness. This is a more involved process though, since you need to imbue an object or point of your focus with enough energy to bend the light away or suck it up. You figure it would likely take you four hours to copy and transfer this spell, but other than the time, nothing is stopping you to start copying.
Beyond the spells though, you find several notes in the night hag's journal, that seem to make referrence to a powerful artifact located within a nearby city of Tamoachan, dedicated to a god of the underworld, Zotzilaha. Reading further on, it seems as though the undead in the region are here as a result of the curse placed on that temple and whatever resides within it, rather than having been the doing of the night hag. Throughout, the night hag refers to the culture that built Tamoachan as "underworldlings", but from a few illustrations, you take it that they must have looked very similar to the bearded statues you found outside of Koro-arak's alchemist caverns. It stands to reason that the grung might know about the city.

Shae would approach Fang and offer him the Needle of Mending after noticing his interest in it. She'd then approach the Professor when it appears there's a break in his reading. She would accept the Illusionist’s Bracers should he still suggest them for her use.
The warlock would spend her time reviewing, reflecting and attuning to the new scavenged items. Though, it wouldn't take long after she was connecting with these magical items that she would end up curling herself up into a ball on the floor to take a short nap... or so. The level and amount of magic she wove was beyond anything she's ever experienced before, and it exhausted her. Shae would rest soundly in the presence of those around her.
Short rest: 6
Something would wake the warlock. She'd peek open with one eye. It would take a moment, but she'd eventually register that her nap was not as invigorating as she hoped it'd be. Sitting up to stretch, Shae will let out some groans as she did. "Ugh. I need some TLC..." She'd mutter to herself as she'd cast Cure Wounds on herself.
Heal: 14
Shae would let out an audible sigh of relief. She felt a lot better, though she could tell she just used half of the reserves she just gained to feel better. The warlock would lay herself back down on the ground. She'd rest there a little longer watching the others putter about with purpose and finding things to keep themselves busy. The warlock would be guilty of trying to sneak in another short rest before they carried on the next step of their journey.
"Indeed, Shae, these bracers would serve you better than me. Use them well," says Snively, happily puffing away on his pipe. Seeing Shae notice the pleasing odorless vapor, the Professor says with a bit of mirth, "It completes the look, don't you think?"
OOC: Apparently you can only have the number of cantrips on your sheet that you have 'slots' for--you can't transcribe them into your spellbook. Copied spells have to be level 1 or higher, and cantrips--for wizards at least--aren't even in the spellbooks. I found this out researching why I couldn't add a cantrip to Snively's character sheet.

Fang lets you all know that the grung plan on burying their dead tomorrow night, so you have a full day at Heroes' Rest. While the professor is spending his time transcribing spells and sharing notes with Maxine, Berrus is training with his newly acquired short sword, reducing several nearby treetrunks to kindling in the process.
Shae is resting some more, and while you're dozing off, you have another dream. This time, Kam is healthy, with gleaming white pelt and a golden mane, almost sparkling in the sunlight. A warm feeling flows over you and you hear the warm voice inside your head: "With the coven sundered, a first step against evil in these lands has been taken." WIth that, Kam disappears, and instead you see yourself, floating above the clouds, with wind rushing past you. No, you're not floating, you're falling! A short wave of panic hits, before you remember Kam's parting gift. Channeling your inner light, you suddenly sense the rushing air change, and your descent becoming more controlled. The feeling is amazing and you can't stop yourself from doing a few loops. As you pierce the cloud cover though, you find yourself high above the jungles of Chult, staring down at the endless green sea. You spot the smoking plumes of the volcanoes rising out from the jungle, and you see the silvery lake and surrounding swamplands where you first stumbled onto the Horned Lady. You can make out a stream flowing northwards, and another to the northwest flowing into a large basin. To the northeast, at the foot of a volcano, you spot a strangely symmetrical valley, until you fly over it and see that it is in fact the remains of a buried city, and a few miles beyond that, you spot the open sea.
Suddenly, the vision disappears, and you find yourself wake up with a loud gasp, and bright lights dancing in front of your eyes as you blink yourself awake.

OOC: So, Hold Person and Darkness are Snively's new spells in his book, and Dispel Magic & Hypnotic Pattern are too high a level for him. That's fair. Mirror Image from Shae would be good, too, while we have the time.
That evening after dinner, Snively gathers the others around and shows them what he has learned about the undead plague and its source in Tamoachan as shown in the Hag's journal. If the reference to the powerful artifact in that city is specific enough, he will use the Mirror of the Past to show the group the history of that object. In the likely event the description of that object is inadequate, instead the Professor will have the mirror give us a glimpse into the past of the Horned Lady.

OOC: Actually, it's counterspell and hypnotic pattern.
The hag's notes didn't define what artifact is causing this. Looking at the mirror for the Hag's past, you're shown a group of heroes in animal skin pelts and feathered helmets doing battle with the night hag and her two sisters. Then, you see a scene of a young and pretty dwarven woman, being dressed and made up for some festival or ritual. Next, you see the night hag make several voodoo dolls from sticks, thorns and twine, with the creatures looking like the heroes in the first part of the vision. Lastly, you're shown the terrifying image of a creature half bat, half panther prepare to prance. Then, the images fade and the mirror only reflects the Professor's face.

"Thank you for your efforts in thiss matter glasses. It is some comfort knowing that it wasn't a premonition of things to come." "What will I do now? … That is a good question. I offered to help in the fight against the hag mainly as a way to help my village survive. Now that she and her ilk are no more and so should I be if it hadn't been for the four of you." He pauses for a moment, not overly fond of having to admit being saved by soft one. "I feel I must accompany you now at least for a time to return the favor if I can. I've always been seen as a bit odd in the village because I enjoyed the few books we have acquired and as such spent much of my time on my own honing my survival skills. From what I have seen of your group, everyone, except perhaps Rings(berrus) enjoys reading and gathering new knowledge and I should like to do some of that myself."
In game at least … IRL that turned out to be a different story. lol
The conversation earlier with glasses was in draconic as is most of Fang's speech that seems fairly eloquent. As he has a better grasp on it than common. However seeing Shae approach and seeing her interest and desire to help would, Fang would have asked Glasses to translate his speech for Shae
To Shae, "Thank you for sharing. I appreciate knowing I wasn't alone in this experience and that what you saw hasn't, at least as of yet, come to pass."
After these conversations, Fang will take a moment to acquaint himself with the needle he found, learning all he can of its functionality.
Dm if you could kindly update inventories for Shae and myself. I didn't see it in the equipment tab when I tried to add it myself.
Hearing the conversation between Bolt(Maxine) and Glasses, Fang would chime in after having finished with the dagger. "You are correct, there won't be as much hunting or fishing needed for a few days at least. I should think all of you would be welcome to join in honoring them in that way if you so choose."
After informing the group when the grung plan on burying their dead from the battle, Fang would walk a short distance away and appear to be talking to his hand near the edge of the camp. Then he would announce, loud enough to be heard by all, "I'm going out hunting. I should return a few hours before nightfall."
DM, I would leave Mushu here to keep an eye on things while I am away and tell him to come find me if there is any trouble. I would of course tell him where he would be able to locate me. And if he felt so inclined he could perhaps give Shae a decent scare, but don't sting her.
Waking up in a start from dozing off yet again, Shae would frantically pull out her notebook, the map and cartography tools. She'd pour over it, jotting down notes, recording what she was shown, and tracing out the area on the map. If some of it was missing, she'd make rough sketches on a separate sheet of where she believes it to be based off of her visions. The scholar would specifically make note of what appears to be a buried city.
"Maxine..." Finally, Shae would put down her tools, rub her eyes and face. "It happened again." She'd blink up at the ceiling to refocus. Now that she finished the mapping, she allowed herself to reflect on the comfort of Kam being strong and healthy. That allowed her to relax for a moment and breathe easy. The warlock would look over to her friend, then everyone else in her proximity. "My vision showed me this." She'd walk them through her 'flight path' along with her mapped notes, pointing out what she saw and what she suspects to be a buried city. Shae would ponder out loud "Professor, based on our studies in the cave and your findings from the hags journals, could this be something related?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Glasses:
Responding to Shae, the Professor says, "Of course, Shae, let me see what I can find in my Gazetteer. I wonder if this could be the lost city the Horned Lady referred to in her notes, Tamoachan. Unfortunately, the magic mirror only works on objects and creatures, not locations." Working with the map, the Gazetteer, and the Hag's notes, Snively investigates with Shae.

Shae would ponder out loud "Professor, based on our studies in the cave and your findings from the hags journals, could this be something related?"
just an unstable unicorn.
