Not having planned to go the the event today as he really didn't go in for the bloodsport, the Professor decided to show up after all to keep Shae company, if nothing else. Shae and Professor, as you follow the two guards, you enter the viewing terraces and see the large pit in the centre of this edifice. The terraces are tiered, with the less wealthy relegated to the upper terraces further away from the action. The guards move you swiftly through the gathering crowd, onwards to a private balchony covered with a crimson baldachin. You make your way there to find Wakanga, dressed in an azure kneelength shirt, white pluming pantaloons, and a black vest embroidered with golden stitching that you recognise upon closer inspection to be runes of warding. Next to him and seated on an ebony folding chair, you see a young and slender figure with a full head of hair held back by an intricately decorated and bejewelled hairnet. She is wearing a form-fitting black silk dress that is vaguely see-through, with a finely woven crimson shawl. her gaze looks at you, with an air of nonchalance. She doesn't rise as one of the guards announces: "Lady Kwayothé, this is Professor Iversoll Templeton, and his travelling companion, Lady Shae".
She glances at you both, and then says in a calm and measured way: "What business do ou wish to discuss so urgently that you had to find me at the Executioner's run?" "Merchant Princess Kwayothé, they..." Wakanga starts, but is quickly cut off: "Silence O'Tamu, I asked my guests. You've done your part and introduced us, no one is holding you here." He shoots her an angry glance, but remains silent and at his place.

Otto wakes up in the morning, still cuddling the rod. Pulling on a loose tunic, he grabs his pouches and decides to head into the city to find some breakfast. It's not long before he notices the bustle and remembers that the Executioner's Run is on today, and decides to go along and busk for some coin. He has barely arrived and started his first routine when two burly guards arrive and order him to go along. You don't argue with the guards in this town, so Otto complies and soon finds himself in the company of two familiar faces - the pretty lady and the grumpy gnome from the night before. Memories stir like two-day-old porridge but gradually he recalls some details from the evening. There was a meeting with the merchant prince. A breaking vase. A theft of some kind. Otto agreeing to something. But what? Finally he looks around at the guards, across to the site of the Executioner's Run, then up at Shae and says: Hello... um... did they catch the thief then? But before she has a chance to answer, the guards escort her and the professor away, leaving Otto to tag along behind.
OOC: How much has Shae told the Professor about Fang's predicament?
"Lady Kwayothé, it is indeed a pleasure to meet you," starts the Professor, looking to Wakanga and saying, "And my thanks to you for arranging this meeting, Prince Wakanga."
"A simple question, and I will answer directly, as I see you are much more interested in the coming spectacle, Merchant Princess Kwayothé. We have been retained by the Prince to go on an expedition into the jungle, and he tells us that you and your people have the best supplies, specifically rations, medical supplies and insect repellent. Otto, there are plenty of people bustling between the different stands, handing out chits in return for money. You figure that they are all placing bets, and that one of these people might be able to provide you with the information you seek.
Professor, the Marchant Princess raises an eyebrow in amusement: "Not only do I have the best supplies, but without me you'd risk landing down there buying any. But it would be a shame to discuss business at such a splendid event. Why don't you join me in watching today's run, we can discuss business after" She gives a malicious grin, sensing the Professor's repulsion at the whole practice. She seems to enjoy being in power and control and having you suffer through the bloodsport because she wills it.
Mulligan, you approach the viewing terraces and are quickly led through, after the half orc makes a gesture marking you as belonging to the staff. Even in the rare times when Mulligan doesn't know anyone at all he does know types - Buskers all know one another even if they've never met, their shared experiences giving them an in even if complete strangers. Same with Rounders and Hustlers, Card Sharps and Charlatans. One makes and keeps their connections so one can draw on them when needed... In this way it takes Mulligan McScáth some time to make his way to the Crimson Baldachin but through all his glad-handing and chit-chat, his eyes never leave his intended target.
Along the way Mulligan picks up the vibe on the 'contestants' in the days run, the early odds being laid and the amount of action in the crowd. Business as usual, really.
He eventually pauses at the outskirts of the baldachin, making small talk with the others there. The best way to gain entry to a place is to get people thinking you already are inside. You join the crowd on the outskirts and just smoothly and naturally work the crowd so that going from outer edge to inner edge to inside doesn't even seem to have happened. Nobody sees the weeds grow, but suddenly one day they need to be pulled. Still and all, once inside it is still best to work the edge, to be inconspicuous, to see more than be seen and hear far more than anyone suspects...
But in the meantime, his eyes search for Shae. The woman was why he had come to this gathering, after all. Mulligan preferred games and events that he controlled, or could at least manipulate, over gore filled spectacles that only got the crowds riled up for more blood. Not the ideal place to be caught... Not that Mulligan would ever be caught. But everyone is, eventually...
Otto spends quite some time trying to decide which bookkeeper to approach ("Not that one, she looks kinda mean." "Not that one, he's one of Talroa's men." Shae was anxious. It wasn’t the sport of the Executioner’s Run that made her uncomfortable. The scholar was aware of the difference in the culture here. Sure, it was different than what she was used to, and there were things she personally didn’t agree with, but after spending some time in Chult, she felt parts of her have become accustomed to their ways. Not that she was excited for gore and carnage, but she understood how the locals have come to make it a spectacle in their society.
What made Shae uneasy was her concern for Fang. Mushu had come to her with worrisome emotions and troubled visions. He warned her Fang would be here, and she could sense the familiars anticipation as they progressed closer to the event. Shae had convinced Mushu to travel with her, tucked in her pocket. Today her garment was simple. She wore light flowing white fabrics that kept her cool from the hot sun. Starting from her neck as a halter top, the material clung to her, cinching at her waist and continued down the length of her legs. Standing still, it flowed much like a dress, but as she strode, they were actually pants, allowing her better mobility.
Shae kept her hands tucked in her pockets, trying to mimic an air of matching importance to those she was meeting. The truth was, she never believed herself to be anyone of significance, but Shae did believe in herself a little more each day. It had been a long journey of growth and self-acceptance since she was saved from herself. She was given a gift, a second chance, and now she had the desire in her heart to live it. That was the air of confidence that she wanted to give off, content just to be and curiosity to learn.
Blue hues that held a hint of mischief would fall over the Merchant Princess. Though, a playful smile tugged at Shae’s lips when the woman would flaunt her dominance over the situation and exerted her control over the conversation. Shae had set motions into place in hopes to give them added leverage to their ask, but since when does anything ever go as planned? Especially without any opportunity to brief. The Professor had taken it upon himself to just practically display all their cards at the Princess’ feet.
Letting out a playful drawn out sigh ignoring the Professor, Shae would turn to look over the stadium. She’d lean forward against the balcony, lazily resting her chin in one hand, looking longingly out. “What do you wager Princess?” She’d ask nonchalantly before continuing to muse out loud, gauging her interest. “Are there real warriors out there today, or just savage beasts?”
"...so the animal handlers are betting which way today?" Mulligan was asking a bookie he knew from way back when someone suddenly caught his eye. "Sorry, 'scuse me. Back in a bit..."
Catching up to and falling into stride with his target, Mulligan comments "I totally thought you were a goner last night," to Otto. "I mean I may have been able to bustle you out looking like a guard like that but... You did know I was the third guard, didn't you?"
Mulligan and Otto weren't the best of friends or anything but the ran in overlapping circles so have crossed paths on occasion. As has been mentioned, it's good to have connections... and hopefully this one would walk him right into things.
Oh! Hi... er... Murdoch. Thanks, I guess.Otto looks like he has no idea what Mulligan is talking about, and probably remembers last night very differently from the bard. Hey, are you gonna bet? Who you wanna bet on? Apparently there's this halfling, but I don't think they... Hey, you remember that stuffy gnome from the party? He's over at that... How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Mulligan and Otto, you learn that the odds are against the contestants today. Still though, people in the know had their favourites. The contestants today were a mixed bunch: a human lady from the wilds, picked up for murder and cannibalism; a lizardfolk wanderer picked up for vagrancy and theft; a halfling forger who is a repeat offender; and a halfelf who made the mistake of making a watch-captain a cuckold. Due to the violence of her alleged crimes, some bet heavily on the human to take down one of the panthers, but they don't believe she's gonna make it out of the pit. In fact, Mulligan, you overhear someone saying that he knew she wouldn't. Odds on her are 1:6 for making it, but 1:2 that she's going to kill an animal. The lizardfolk wanderer has the widest spread, with some thinking he's a complete fish out of water and likely to be ground to a pulp by the triceratops, but others giving him decent odds, if he's made it through the jungle and to the city. Overall, the going rate seems to be 1:5 that he's going to make it. The halfling has the best odds of the group, after all, he made the run successfully already. But the presence of the triceratops still puts expectations somewhat lower, and odds are 1:3 for him. The halfelf has the worst odds, very much taken to be a fighter not a lover. His chances are 1:12.
Besides the side bet that the human lady is going to kill an animal, other popular side bets are that two of the contestants will be gored to death by the dinosaur, going at 1:3 odds, and an outside bet, going at 1:8 goes that the panthers will rack up more kills than the triceratops. A combined bet that more than one contestant survives is available at 1:6 odds. Naming the contestants gives you 1:15 odds.
Shae, the merchant princess looks at you, with a hint of recognition of the game your playing, and answers: "Well, since I placed two of the contestants in the pit today, I very much hope that they will make for a good showing. Then again, one of them was both." Discretely, you are then informed on the odds and the contestants by one of the attendants. Wakanga, by now seated too, looks just as displeased as the Professor, but having spent an evening with him, you figure that he's in fact playing along, hoping that his displayed displeasure will put her off her guard.

Shae would turn, leaning back on her elbows. Blue hues would look the Merchant Princess up and down. Then after some air of silence, she’d break it. “Would you bet on me?”
Hey Shae, ... Shae’s attention would be grabbed by the loud voice that came to greet her. With a softening facial expression, she’d correct her posture and bend at the knees to address the approaching halfling. “Hello.” She’d say in return to the entertainer, realizing she did not get the jokesters name.
“Meredith?“ Her head would tilt and her eyes would get drawn back up as he’d gesture behind him to his plus one. ”Doesn’t she clean up nice.” Shae would flash Mulligan a wry smile.
Looking back to the lucky halfling, her smile would grow with warmth. “Hmm...” Shae’d muse nibbling her lip. This was a welcomed distraction and an opportunity for her to play along, but a little difficult to bring herself to do... Fang was in there.
Reaching out, Shae would gently brush some dirt and dust off the halflings shoulders. “Let’s test that lucky feeling, shall we?” Her lip would pull into a playful smirk as she’d give a gentle tug to correct his shirt a bit. She’d lean in to whisper into his ear “200 on the Lizardfolk.” She’d go all in for Fang... but needed to look more realistic, so she’d add, “And 150 on the wild woman.” There was something about her... Shae felt like maybe part of the story could be missing there? And she found herself curious to learn more.
Perhaps Shae could keep the halfling on task and relatively loyal, or at least fair, with her. If they were going to be working together, she believed in building a rapport and trust. And she had no reason to personally distrust the eccentric halfling. So, after a pause, she’d continue. “There’d be a 25% cut in it for you.” Shae would then reach into her garment to pull out a pouch of coin, dangling it between them. “You had me at BBQ scallions.” She’d wink. “There’s enough for you to grab us some too. What do you say...?” She’d hope to get his name this time.
"Cannibals and lizards, never bet against them," Mulligan says, returning Shae's smile and moving to stand casually next to her.
"Sending him to make your bets, though? You may want to write it down for him. He's an affable sort but kind or... erratic," Mulligan says brightly. "Oh, and, hello again. It's been too long..."
Mulligan looks around the area taking in and assessing the people and the situation. Exits were plentiful, which was always a plus, and crowds were a mixed bag as they could hinder a quick getaway but provided opportunities to blend in. Still, hopefully there would be no need for such a hasty retreat this day...
The viewing platform is a good threehundred feet or so away from the pit, but due to its elevated position you have a fairly unobscured view of much that goes on inside, which at the moment is just two of the handlers raking sand over some pits towards the end of the run, likely to hide some of the traps that were laid there.
The merchant princess smiles at Shae's suggestion: "Lady Shae, your reputation, if indeed not simply the product of this Professor's imagination, is quite heroic, and I doubt that anything in that pit would be a match for you. But with such fame, I doubt there would be any good odds..." Before she can add something else, she's interrupted by Mulligan and Otto. You notice that she seems amused and surprised, more than annoyed, and her interest seems peaked after the halfling runs off with his instructions.
At the professor's question, the Princess looks at him, with a bored glare: "We have the Beast from the Swamp, The Conqueror of Hearts, The Wolf Lady, and the Gangster. The people want something catchy, no one cares for their actual names. That being said though, who did you bet on?"

"Couple guys I know actually say the Halfling's odd...."
"Oh, Shae?"
Mulligan tries to keep up but takes it all in with a smile.

((What distance is this baldachin away from the "competition" area? How close could we get to it while staying in this general area? Like staying within this security area?))
Glasses:
Eyes flashing in alarm and recognition as the Princess describes Fang, the Professor looks to Shae, realizing he can’t help his friend without likely getting thrown into the Run himself. Nodding at her, he understands that, as distasteful as it may be, they now had some inside information about one of the accused that might be useful in engaging the Princess.
In a vain attempt to be nonchalant but betraying his worry, Snively asks the oddsmakers, “What are the names of the accus...I mean contestants?”
Gerrard Feldren - Human Noble in Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Kerric Brightblade - Elven Warrior in "Apocalypse"
Otto hurries back to the baldachin with his fellow entertainer in tow. Without too much regard for propriety, he calls out with a loud and over-excited voice: Hey Shae, I wanna place a bet, but I'm not sure who... Hey, you should meet my friend Meredith, he's a... You know I'm feeling lucky, I'll take any bet that anyone wants to... Hey, apparently they are selling barbequed ascallions for 25% off today, that's a really good... So who do you think I should bet on?
How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
What do you say...?” She’d hope to get his name this time.
just an unstable unicorn.
