[OOC: Guilliame has heard of spells that can be used to mask the nature of another spell, but, as far as he knows, See the Arcane should still reveal the presence of a spell. This is relevant because the flask shows no sign of being magical.]

"I think it may be a good idea for you to question the witness. It may cast some more light on this situation and there is nothing else to be done for the moment. The Sheriff will want a report so I will sit in."
"Let us not get ahead of ourselves," replies Basilly, pulling a stylus and a small bound volume of paper out of a pouch on his hip. "Seeker Lomani will want to know the background for when and if she questions the witness. That is why I am here."
Taking a seat at the table, he then opens the book and prepares to write. "Now, you said you had a witness, but that they may be... "wavering"... When did this witness come forward and why are they now possibly changing their mind? Considering the conflicting evidence Master de Marchant has from the flask, perhaps this is a false accusation against their master. It would not be the first time that has happened."

"The sheriff is not aware of any connection between Master Brassman at his office and Master Hazluk. Our witness Samuel is either genuinely scared of his master or putting on a convincing show. I wonder when the liquid was put in the flask. It may have nothing to do with Master Brassman at all."
I stand up and square my shoulders, this is my beat, my watch and my Hand, "Apprentice Cullen, I will not be spoken down to."
"My Hand has been on high alert this evening as if what Samel says is true then he has powerful enemies who are capable of using dark Magick and his death would be an easy solution. Guilliame's investigation of the flask confirms the involvement of the rich and powerful even if does raise further questions. You need to be mindful that this game is still playing out and now I have the complication of the Sheriff being overdue."
"You do need to be briefed, I will cover events at the Shepherds Rest, and what transpired from my questioning of Samel. Guilliame will cover his investigations of the flask and lantern his discussion with the Sherrif and his later questioning of Samel. Try to keep up."
"We were on duty at the Shepherd's Rest earlier this evening. Brutha Hazluk was there participating in a competition. At the end of the competition which he won he requested that we accompany him back to the city, as we had other responsibilities I refused. Hazluk struck me as not being sincere in what he said at any time of the evening. A short time after he had left he returned apparently injured claiming he had been set upon however he would not let me examine his injuries. He claimed to have used magick to escape his pursuers which raised my concerns as Guilliame had not picked up on his innate sorcery powers. We checked outside and spotted someone lurking behind a trough. I gave chase and they escaped but Id did hear a young man's voice scattering the beasts in the pen. I found the flask in the corral he had run to and the lantern where he had been lurking. I smelt the contents of the flask and recognised it as a dark magick potion."
"We returned here to the guardpost only to discover the young man had followed us and was hiding underneath the platform. We apprehended him and have held him since. At some point Guilliame recognised him from the inn where he had seen him speaking to Hazluk. I questioned him in the presence of Barrus. He had followed us to try to take the flask back, he was deathly scared of the consequences of losing it. He claimed that Hazluk had given him the flask for safekeeping as Hazluk had feared being waylaid. He had been instructed to hide outside and follow Hazluk when he departed. He claimed that he had fallen asleep and missed Hazluk's departure. He also claimed that Hazluk used the contents of the flask. During this process he required constant reassurance as he was apparently terrified of Magi [OOC hope that is right!] and of his masters the Hazluks. He reluctantly spoke against the Hazluks describing happenings at their household which may be black magick related or may simply be the behaviour of the rich and powerful."
"Samel, the witness has had to be constantly reassured throughout this night that we will ensure his safety. Either he is a not particularly bright victim or he is a genius playing us for his own ends. I know not which and I hope you Seekers can work this out."
I speak to Jack and Luka "would you please take over sentry duty from Barrus and Alice please, send them back here for a break, keep each other in sight and whistle us at the slightest event."
During Dora's description of the events, Basilly sat quiet, studiously taking notes in his small book.
Once she has finished speaking, he thinks for a moment before saying, "I am sorry if you thought I was speaking down to you Handleader, that was not my intent. I was simply trying to ascertain the facts so that they can be acted upon accordingly..."
Then, after a moment's more thought, he asks, "And so, please tell me why you think you and the witness are in immediate danger? From your description, this witness's masters could simply be wondering where he has gotten to... I also think we need to find out more about this Brassman person you mentioned. If Magus de Marchant's reading of the flask is correct, then the only real evidence of wrongdoing by the Hazluks is the word of your witness and it would not do to malign a respected family of the city for someone else's misdemeanour."

I nod curtly to Apprentice Cullen "Brutha Hazluk left the Inn during our pursuit of Samel - he knew that we had flushed Samel from his hiding place. If Samel has not returned then he will realise that he is in the custody of the Watch. You will remember that we have a link between Samel and Brutha Hazluk at the Inn which strengthens Samel's story. You also have my assessment of Hazluk as behaving very oddly at the Inn. If the story is true then Hazluk will know we have the flask which he has allegedly taken great pains to keep hidden. The word of Samel as a witness of course needs to be tested but it should not be demeaned on the basis of his social status."
"This is not set-up nor a scheme, neither our presence at the Shepherd's rest nor the presence of a magus with the Watch could not have been predicted. What happened tonight was a series of unfortunate events for someone and we need to determine who that is."
Basilly refers briefly to his notes and then says, "But did you not say that your witness—this Samel—came here to the guard post to try to recover the flask and that he was deathly afraid of its loss being discovered? ... In which case, I cannot see how his master would know where he is at this time, seeing it appears he has not informed his master of it being missing."
Continuing to think, Basilly than adds, "I suppose we could assume that this Brutha Hazluk is a villain, and that he has feared the worst and guessed that Samel had been captured by the Watch, but even then, why would he consider himself in any danger? After all, he does not know what Samel has told you... His servant, his flask, if what you believe is correct. All he has to do is come and claim his property and his missing servant... No, I do not think there is immediate danger here."
He then turns to Guilliame and asks, "How sure are you that this flask belongs to this Brassman person you mentioned? That is the part of this I do not understand. How can the flask belong to two people at the same time?"
At this point, Jack calls out from the road saying that he can see the sheriff's coach approaching.

"I disagree, the minds of villians do not rest easy. Hazluk will know that his servant ran and we pursued him. To know that we would search his servant once he was apprehended and discover the flask is not a big leap in logic. (Even though it did not quite happen like that.) He knows we had a magus at the inn with the possibility that he would recognise the potion. Unless his judgement is impaired by what he has imbibed then he will know he will be under suspicion."
Standing up, "anyway I must go greet the Sheriff" I walk down the steps to the road.
As Dora walks off, she hears Basilly say, "That is a lot of ifs, and I do not believe there is enough evidence at the moment for the Seekers to proceed in harassing the Hazluks."
Then she hears him add, "So, Guilliame, tell me about this reading you did. The Identify spell is not a ritual I have mastered yet."
For Dora:
A little while after Dora joins Jack on the road, the sheriff's coach arrives.
Looking ill at ease, the driver speaks down to Dora, saying, "Handleader Wallus, you are to bring the Seeker and the witness to the Sheriff's Office immediately. Saladin Brassman is dead."
