[OOC: The children's hit points are based on my standard 0th level NPC rules modified for their age. This gives them 5 hit points modified by the Constitution bonus (an adult has a base of 8). This gives them the following hit points (determined randomly):
This means, fortunately, that Yas is one of the first to be put to sleep. It also means that the larger boy, like Guilliame, is not affected.
I have used one of Guilliame's spell slots on his character sheet for the casting of this spell. I will also now re-roll for the result of the Wild Magic surge.
Wild Magic Surge Re-roll:81
An interesting one (and permanent): "Roll a d10. Your height changes by a number of inches equal to the roll. If the roll is odd, you shrink. If the roll is even, you grow."
Note, this affects Yas, not Guilliame.
Height change roll: 8
]
Watching the particles of mana surrounding Yas as he attempts his magic again, Guilliame suddenly sees a mass of the golden particles appear around the boy—apparently out of thin air. Instantly Guilliame realises that this is a wild magic surge: chaotic, uncontrolled magic that could produce any number of bizarre and possibly dangerous effects.
Thinking quickly, Guilliame reaches into his component pouch and draws out a pinch of his 'Sleep' powder, which he casts over the general area of Yas and the children in the hope of breaking the out-of-control connection the boy has somehow made to an unseen source of power.
All the children—except the one older boy in the group—quickly succumb to the spell and fall to the ground, suddenly asleep. However, Guilliame's Mage Sight reveals that the problem hasn't been solved by his desperate action. The huge mass of mana is still present, concentrating around the form of the fallen Yas, who twists and turns and moans in his sleep as the particles seep into his body.
"What is going on here," Guilliame hears a female voice say.
Looking up, Guilliame sees an anxious-looking Mistress Salazar rushing across the grass towards him and the fallen children.
[OOC: I am going to award Guilliame 30 experience points and 1 hero die for his efforts; I have updated his character sheet.]
"I saw you cast a sleep spell," Mistress Althea says to Guilliame before kneeling on the ground to look at Yas, who is still asleep but no longer looks to be in pain. "Why? What happened here?"
Before Guilliame can say anything, Fazal anxiously says, "It was not me. Yas was trying to cast Dancing Lights and something went wrong... There was magic everywhere."

In automatic response to Guilliame's last comment, Mistress Althea looks down at Yas and says, "Taller? Really? I cannot tell."
Then she begins looking around in the grass. "Where is his focus?" she ask. Then she looks up sharply and says, "Was this boy experimenting with magick he has not been taught?"
"He said he could do it," says Fazal, sounding anxious.
Mistress Althea shakes her head angrily and says, "You should have stopped him Fazal. You know that Dancing Lights needs a material component to help focus and control the magic. Did you tell him that?"
"No, Mistress Salazar," says Fazal looking down guiltily. "I, I, did not think it would matter." [OOC: Althea is Mistress Salazar's first name and the younger students use her family name.]
"Well it does," she says getting to her feet and looking stern. "Sorcerers new to their powers need to be careful because they do not have the necessary control... Who knows what might have happened if Master de Marchant here had not been on hand."
"I am sorry, Mistress Salazar," says Fazal, looking both fearful and contrite.
Mistress Althea looks at him sternly for a moment and then softens her gaze. "Well," she then says, "it looks like young Yas has gotten off lightly... And hopefully he will have learnt a lesson as well. Now, help me with these children. We should take them to the infirmary just to check that everything as okay."
As Fazal begins the process of waking the sleeping children up, Mistress Althea takes Guilliame aside.
"The casting of your spell was perhaps a little risky as well," she says quietly, so that only Guilliame can hear, "But, if the only unexpected thing to come out of this episode was for some of the children to have an unexpected nap, then we were lucky."
[OOC: I will stop here in case you want Guilliame to say something.]

The children, even Yas, are now all awake and, although they look a little confused by what happened, seem to be unharmed to Guilliame.
"Say thank you to Master de Marchant," says Mistress Althea.
The children all thank Guilliame, though some of them sound as though they aren't quite sure why.
Then Mistress Althea adds, "And now you can say good bye to him because you are all coming with me to the infirmary."
The children all dutifully say good bye to Guilliame and then begin to follow her as she leads them away.

Entering the building, Guilliame is confronted by a large desk behind which is standing an older Sorendenese man dressed in the clothing of a clerk, who is busily writing something down in a ledger. The man finishes what he is writing before lifting his eyes and looking Guilliame up and down.
"Ah, Magus de Marchant, I presume," says Vosel. "And what might I do for you today?"
