"No," says Jay, taking a sip from his goblet. "They had a falling out with each other... I haven't seen that big Angolorian lout for a very long time."
The door to the shop opens and Helas stands in the entrance holding the door open while first one and then the other of the 'prostitutes' enters the shop.
"This is not what we planned," declares the first of the women, who is the one that Brand spoke to second.
"Plans have changed," says Jay, then to Helas he says, "We are going to go now. Is there any problem with us leaving the back way?"
Helas, still looking a bit confused, shakes his head and Jay then says to Brand. "If you want to see Melitta, you need to come with us now."

Once more Jay lowers his voice to speak privately with Brand. "Sorry about all the subterfuge, but I really thought you might be working for one of the oppressors... These are hard times Alaric, and one can't be too careful. I'm still not completely trusting of Helas, you know."

Jay then finishes his drink with a quick gulp and puts his goblet down. "Now, we must go, we have put poor Willard's shop at enough risk already. We will take this conversation to a more private location and you may get to see Melitta after all, if she's there."
He then starts towards the back of the shop, saying, "Come along, Alaric, this is an opportunity too good to miss."

[[To Brand, currently, Jay is a friend from the old days. Which old days will be up to you to decide, but based on the conversation so far it would seem that he is someone Brand knew from his days as an adventurer. However, to get around the obvious limitations of the spell definition—and to still make the casting of it worthwhile against such probing as is happening now—one might also assume that the magic is having Brand fill in a lot of the gaps himself, so as to not cause inconsistencies in the mind of the charmed person. Basically, Brand can't think himself out of the effect of the spell until it has run its course. So, for the moment, let us say that Jay is someone Brand remembers from his days as an adventurer.]

Brand follows Jay outside where the latter pauses to say good night to Helas. The two women are also waiting out here, the less crude one with a small flame burning on the palm of her hand.
"Thank you, Willard," says Jay. "I'll be in touch tomorrow."
"Yes, Master," says Helas, after which he whispers, "May Arion watch over you."

[[But if the memories don't exist, then the spell causes the victim's mind to fill in the gaps to avoid contradictions. Basically, for the spell to be any use at all, someone who is charmed is unable to think themselves out of the effect of the spell. However, they also can't be forced to do something completely out of character; there are more powerful spells that do that.
Andrew experienced an example of this when he charmed a villain and yelled for him to get the guard. Then turns back to Jay, "So...now that we are away from the shop...whys is it that you don't trust Master Helas?"
"Who's Malfos?" queries the woman. "Oh, do you mean Helas's rat. Yeah, he's a cutey, isn't he?"
"Oh, I trust Helas," says Jay with a little chuckle. "It's just an old questioner's trick—a distraction. I was just using it to check that you were who you look like; that you were the real Alaric Brand. But it's all good now. Don't worry about it. He's one of us, through and through."
[[The way Jay is leading Brand is not particularly familiar to him. Make a Wisdom check to see if he recognises any landmarks]].
[[And that it that for me tonight. Ciao.]]

If its a clearish night, he should be able to say NSEW etc.
Brand snorts,"And what was it exactly that you were distracting me from?"
[[ For later
"Well now that you know I am me, perhaps you could explain where we are going and why we had to leave the bookshop?" ]]
