"Please take this away. It is tasteless and I have no appetite for it."
As Brand takes the tray away, he says "Eating is important...your body probably needs it even if you are not hungry. Is there something you might prefer?"
"I tried to eat some of it, but it tastes like wet paper," he replies. "And it's cold now."
"I will do what I can, though that may be little, I'm afraid."
Brand smiles, "Let them know where to send the next group of rescuers, if nothing else."
Nathaniel returns Brand's smile and says, "I certainly hope that won't be necessary."
magical ever-burning flames the School uses to light paths at night
[[ How does this compare to the device Eddard had? Brand might ask to borrow it if it is portable...and replace his lantern with it and it's cover. ]]
[[This ever-burning light has been made to look like a normal lit candle; it is even stuck in a fairly ornate candlestick. It gives off more light than a candle (i.e., the equivalent of a torch). It does not give off any heat and does not consume the wax of the candle. There is a leather cap that is put over the top of the candle to stop the light, but Brand is aware that the flame will burn again when the cap is removed. I will let you make your own comparisons and Nathaniel will let Brand take it, if he wants to.]]
"Is Master Nathaniel going to be okay?" she asks, looking nervous.
Brand sighs but smiles again, and nods, "I think so. I hope so. He's been through a lot, and I think that the battle this afternoon has taken it's toll. But, if anything, he seems to be rejuvenated. Perhaps the healing from the Glory has had lasting effects upon him."
She nods and then hesitates for a moment before finally wishing Brand a good night and turning back to her duties.

Brand says hello to Bruxa then Eddard, his expression a mix of frustration and excitement. "Strange days...I was hoping for a quiet night, studying with Master Nathaniel."

No one tries to stop Brand as he heads to a nearby alley and becomes invisible. He is soon parkouring across the rooftops heading south.
Cyrus didn't tell Brand anything about how the mental connection that he established worked, but as soon as he thinks of the Archmagus he feels something different in his mind and hears an answer to his query.
Yes, I am here, says the Archmagus. Where are you?
From his vantage point of the rooftops, Brand can now see the bridge he will need to cross to get to the Mercantile District. At this point, he realises he will need to drop to ground level to cross the bridge.

Are you able to speak with Minton? he asks.
No, says Cyrus, but I can see a little bit more now, thanks to Narim. I still don't understand why I can't see Minton. My scrying spell was successful... Perhaps he is invisible?

He's not normally invisible, comes the reply. He may be unconscious or asleep, but he is still alive, and I don't see how anyone could misdirect the spell.

Clever thinking, says the Archmagus through the mental link he and Brand are sharing. I am having to recast the scrying spell. Once that is done, and you have reached Portside, if you start blowing the whistle, then I might hear it, which will at least help narrow down the area of your search.
The Mercantile District has a number of venues open at this time of night and Brand can hear the sounds of minstrels and smell the food that is being cooked for those late-night eaters still out on the town. [[ Can you describe the area? I want to minimize completely divergent world views! He's been here a lot before, so much of this would be known to him, I think
Size: depth and breadth -- long and thin?
[[The whole of Portside is a little thinner than what is shown on the map, but basically the same length north to south.]]
Mix of buildings: 1 2 or more story? Bedrock or mud or stilts?
[[Most buildings in this area are wooden and of a single storey and built directly onto the the soil with deep foundations. The ground can be a bit muddy in places, especially after ran and in the early morning if there is a fog.]]
Number of people out on streets? Balconies?
[[At this time of night, not many. There is regular traffic to and from the eateries, drinking houses, gambling houses and brothels. There is the occasional balcony, but most residences in this area are built more with security in mind.]]
Street lighting?
[[Virtually non-existent as this area is too poor to afford magical lighting. There are lanterns outside a few buildings (e.g., taverns and the like), but most people are using lanterns to guide their way through the darkened streets and tend to travel in groups paying a cub or two each to professional lantern carriers. From Brand's point of view, there is a waning quarter moon in the sky visible through the occasional cloud.]]
Guards?]
[[There are three main city guard posts in Portside, the largest one being just outside the Little Sorenden area, which is matched by a guard post of the Sorendenese army inside the restricted area. The other two posts are at the northern end and in the middle and Brand remembers that when, and if, the guards patrol, they do it groups of three.]]
Brand's repeated whistling and moving produces no positive reply from the Archmagus as Brand moves progressively further north in the Portside area. He is well into the area controlled by the gang of thieves and robbers known as the Undertow when the Archmagus speaks out of turn.
Someone has come into the room where Hareld is, and I can finally see properly...
After a few anxious seconds of silence, the Archmagus continues: There is an elderly woman with two disreputable-looking individuals... They are testing Hareld to see if he can hear their thoughts; they clearly don't know that he has lost that ability.
