[[He's done it before and the cost does vary depending on what it is being taken across on the barge. As you both have horses, two lions seems fair.]]
[[Just to clarify. The man Brand is speaking to is a civilian he hasn't met before and the two armed men are not Engelian soldiers, they are city guards (i.e., the equivalent of police). I will assume the following conversation is to a civilian]]
Alaric dismounts, and pulls out his pouch, taking out the required coins, "Thank you for your help sergeant [[whatever rank?]]...", He pauses, waiting for a nane.
"[[Name or not]]"
"Very good, [[name and rank]]. It's a pleasant day to be on the water, though I'm told it may rain later. Hopefully the river won't get too rough for you.".
[[He tries to remember the guard's name and face]]
Alaric turns and stands ready to hold Mikkels mount as he dismounts [[if necessary]].
[[Brand would not be mistaken as a simple guard. He looks like either a mercenary or some sort of adventurer.]]
[[Good to know]]
[[So it's probably Arcane Foci that Brand would go for: most of his gear is focus-based ( I assume), and not even Darkvision has a ritual tag. If he wants stuff he'd use personally, he would want different spells, I think.]]
[[That would be correct. Simple arcane foci also don't require attunement, unlike his three stones, which are currently taking up all his attunement slots.]]
[[Am I correct in assuming creators of Foci are generally wizards? I'm thinking here of fashioning (and recharging) some of his non-attuned gear.]]
[[Yes, with regards to the D&D class, but they may not be called that in this society. The general term used for users of magic in the Sorendenese empire is 'magus', whereas the Gundians prefer the term 'wizard'.]]
[[Is Brand carrying his family signet ring? Is he wearing it?]]
[[Carrying, yes. Wearing under gloves, or if too bulky, then chain around neck.]]
Alaric dismounts, and pulls out his pouch, taking out the required coins, "Thank you for your help..." He pauses, waiting for a name.
The man seems a little surprised and stutters slightly when he replies. "La, Len, me lord. That will be two lions, please." He holds out a grubby hand.
"Very good, Len. It's a pleasant day to be on the water, though I'm told it may rain later. Hopefully the river won't get too rough for you."
"If you say so, me lord," Len says taking the coins Brand hands to him.
Brand turns to see Mikkel standing with the reins of both horses in his hands looking at the approaching barge and the two large horses turning the windlass that is pulling the barge across the channel on its guide ropes.

Works now, excellent. I don't think it ever did work (for me); all I could do was read basic stuff.
[[Comprehension failure: thought fee collector was a guard; reread and now understand]]
Alaric stands with Mikkel as they wait to board the barge. "I've never been fond of river crossings; especially with horses."
[[is there a mud map of city?]]
[[Not as yet. Basically the city straddles the seperate arms of a river delta, with the more established parts of the town built on the larger arms near the centre. The buildings tend to be large and sprawling rather than high and there is very little below-ground architecture because the water table is very close to the surface. The city is made up of distinctly recognisable sections with the ones Brand is most familiar with being: the scholar's district (which lies between the Temple District and the School of Occult Studies); the King's Residence (which takes the whole of a large island formed by the arms of the river); and the Docks (which covers the seaward end of several of the arms of the river).]]
Mikkel assures Alaric that he will make sure that the horses don't cause any problems.
The two guards, having just finished speaking with some other barge passengers, approach Alaric and Mikkel. They both appear to be Stemians and about half a foot shorter than Brand. One is thin and wiry, while the other is thickset. Also, along with the spears they are carrying they both have clubs attached to the belts with leather thongs.
"Morning," says the thin wiry one to Brand. "If you don't already know," he continues on as if by rote, "you are now in the kingdom of Engle, which is ruled by his noble majesty King Oran Maxwell Rafael the Third. Please state the nature of your visit to his majesty's capital: Constantine."
The other guard is idly looking at Mikkel and the horses.

Brand recognises the thin wiry guard from his days as a gambler with Dalshar. He remembers people used to call him Lucky Kynes, but he lost big to Brand in a dice game. He doesn't seem to recognise Brand though.
The thickset guard speaks to his smaller companion in Englesh (all previous conversations have been in Sorendenese), saying, "They can't have come far, Wally. They don't have enough gear."
[OOC: Brand speaks both languages, but he doesn't don't know about Mikkel, but it seems likely seeing as there are Stemian farmers on the estate, who he would have had to work with in the past.]

[[If he can discern the rank of the stocky guard, he'd say ]]
[[No rank insignia are visible. He looks to be a common guard.]]
"My business, [[rank]]? I am visiting a friend and collecting some goods that were ordered from a local establishment."
"My business?" says Brand. "I am visiting a friend and collecting some goods that were ordered from a local establishment."
The wiry guard thinks for a moment and then says, "So, you're a local... I thought you were a travelling sell-sword, what with all that steel you're carrying."
He then looks at Mikkel and says, "And what's your friend's business?"
Mikkel turns away from where he was watching the incoming barge and looks at you for a moment before saying in Sorendenese, "I am a servant of Lord Koric Brand, and I am travelling into the city on business for the Brand family, if you must know."
The guard nods and then queries, "So, you two are travelling together?"
He actually seems to have lost a little bit of interest in Brand and Mikkel now.
"Safety in numbers or the road, don't you think? Besides it's always good to have someone to pass the time with when travelling. Horses are good listeners but not great convetsationalists. My friend here is both."
Alaric glances at the stocky guard, and raises his voice a little. "Speaking of horses, I'd be careful around the piebald if I were youi, she can get a little skittish."
The stocky guard doesn't react to Brand's words, but asks a question of his partner in Stemian. "Is he talking to me? What did he say?"
The wiry man laughs and then says in Stemian, "He said: 'Watch out for the piebald, idiot. She kicks'."
The man makes a face at his partner and then dutifully steps away from the horse. He then walks back to the other guard and says something to him in a low voice.

He then indicates that Brand and Mikkel should proceed onto the barge, which is starting to load on its passengers.
