“It is the Underdark, so...” Jimjar shrugs. “Most things don’t survive down here by being friendly. Take the drow for example. Heartless murderers and schemers, a treacherous system built on an unpredictability dangerous world. Not to mention they worship the demon Lolth,” he pauses, turning to Daerthe. “No offense, of course.”
Mars follows with the group, led by Shuushar. Her eyes are fixed to the stony ground directly in front of her, hands stuffed into the closest things to pockets that are offered by her prisoner's rags. Her long strides are never broken as she keeps pace with those at the head of the party, even as she fumbles her way through an hourly light cantrip on Tuma's coin. The dark-haired young woman seems to be either ignoring or unaware of the pathetic whining sounds coming from her own throat and the tears creeping down to her chin.
"I have no care if you say worse about them. I may be part Drow but I am more proud of my human half. If the chance to leave the Underdark is available I will take it. The surface can be no worse a place then this I would like to think." Daerthe says as she checks her weapons over.
"There are far worse things than drow in the Underdark," Sarith mutters, voice slurred by remnants of the poison. "The land itself will kill the underprepared, Starvation is as terrible an enemy as a hook horror."
The group continues to walk for few hours, through winding, dark tunnels. Finally, the tunnels open into a large cavern, suffused with a faint blue glow. Crystals grow along all surfaces of the area, shedding a strange blue glow.
"The surface can be no worse a place then this I would like to think," Daerthe says as she checks her weapons over.
The old gnome makes a scoffing noise in the back of his mouth, but makes no further comment. His eyes are more on the slowly drying pages of the stolen spellbook than anything else.
When the group finds themselves in the large cavern, Tanser takes a look around.
Tanser - With keen eyes, the deep gnome is able to determine the odd light not only comes from the crystals, but from the air itself, appearing suffused with a strange form of magic. He also notices a clump of fungi in the far corner of the cavern, their shape reminiscent of a large tongue, others appearing like a mass of rotting flesh. Two passageways lead out of this area, one continuing West, while the other leads North. Tanser determines they are the only living creatures in the cavern, but can see many footprints by the entrance to the West exit. They appear to have been made by something similar to a giant centipede or the like, so numerous and close are the prints.
Tanser relays all of this to the group, doing so more out of a desire to pass on knowledge than to show concern for his fellow travelers. Curious about the magic, he tries to learn more about it using his knowledge of the arcane.
Through his extensive knowledge, Tanser is able to determine this area is suffused with Faerzress, unusual pockets of arcane energy, the source of which is long debated by scholars. Areas suffused with faerzress cannot be teleported into, and are difficult to scry into. Casting spells in these magical areas often results in bizarre, unpredictable effects.
Daerthe nods as she listens, this making her grab her handcrossbow and load it before returning it to her belt. "We need to find a source of food soon. It would be foolish I imagine to wonder the Underdark without nourishment."
Tanser - While you can't recall specific information about any centipede-like creatures, you know almost all Underdark creatures are dangerous and could put up a fight, though this doesn't mean it couldn't be good eating (as far as insects are concerned).
The old gnome finishes explaining his observations by waving a finger vaguely. "No magic around the faerzress — the magic air. You may be left dealing with unexpected results. As for food, we can brave fighting the creature that left tracks headed west, or we can head north. There are most likely dangers that way as well, but perhaps a little further along."
Thun - Though a little odd looking, the fungi appear to be edible. With your extensive knowledge of flora, Thun determines the rotting-flesh looking one would likely taste better cooked. The tongue mushrooms are a bit more dubious, and may have some sort of psychoactive affects, but doesn’t appear too dangerous.
Thun lets everyone know that the fleshy fungi can be cooked, and then walks over and sticks a small handful of the tongue mushrooms into his mouth after washing them with a bit of spit.
"While I don't recommend eating this, it can be done, and we have quiet the trek ahead."
His eye brows twitch at the flavor and texture, as he swallows the possibly psychoactive goodness.
Tanser approaches the fungi and grabs a handful of the rotting-flesh looking one. He sniffs it, scrunches up his face a little, then shrugs. He walks a little ways away from the group, puts the handful of fungi on the ground, and walks 10 feet back. Speaking three mystical words in Undercommon, he points a long, slender finger at the clump of fungi and a mote of fire arcs through the air.
"Is everybody we run into going to try and kill us?!" Tuma wails.

Does Tanser know if giant centipede or the like are good to eat?
Nature: 6 (+2 more if history would work)

Thun agrees with Tanser and wants to head north, but before saying so looks around to the fungi and licks his lips,
"mmm...North sounds...good."
He then looks REALLY close at the fungi, and tries to determine if its edible or can be made into medicine while the group makes a decision.

Whether or not it can be eaten raw, whether or not it can be cooked, whether or not it can be made into medicine.

Thun - make a constitution saving throw.

The mushroom sizzles and the smell of roasted fungi fills the air.
