(OOC - Congratulation! We've made page 21! As a reward, I will update the map to reflect changes that have occurred recently - feel free to move ahead until it comes along.
Looking up from his examination of Kitty-K, Bwrb says (to Naivara), "Ah, poor Thel. Kitty Kat would appear to have had something of an appetite. Tell me lady, do your keen senses suggest there is no more of value to be found or gleaned down in the chasm? And remind me, who was Sir Aldith Trensendar?"
Naivara considers Brandywise’s question. “I believe I have investigated the crevasse quite thoroughly, but I suppose it could be followed and explored up past the North bridge. Not much more to see in this part, unless you would like to add to your collection of human bones.”
”Trensendar was, of course, the legendary owner of this very mansion. He was also known as the Black Hawk at the time. He was killed fighting the Orcs that invaded this town through this very cavern. His sword, believed stolen, must have been recovered by the Nothic.”
Naivara regards Swift, Stig, Brandywise and Asmodean. ”What do you think? We need to make a decision about which path we will take. I don’t think we should be splitting up.. but do we take Swift’s path, Night Hawk’s path, or follow Virran? I have a feeling he will get into some trouble following that route, however, he has made his choice. My gut says west or north... and I don’t really want to give the wizard time to pack up his things and disappear.”
”I found in the Nothic’s chest a spell scroll. It will let me foresee the future. The magic is a little beyond me, but I can try my luck at it. It will only work once and my access to it will be denied if I fail. What do you think? Should I try seeing if we would find the wizard if we travel in the Western tunnels?”
Brandy considers. Naivara's is a difficult question (try the magic or not). He finally decides. "There is enough future here right now for us to explore m'Lady. If you are not sure of your command of this yet, then I see that as a signal that it's use will be greater later." He cocks his head thinking. As is his way, his thoughts somehow ooze out of his lips. "Virran's orc-y little nose has stood us in good stead so far. I'm for following it".
And with that, Brandy gathers his souvenirs, stows them securely, checks all his gear quickly, ... and leaps the chasm, following cautiously the path Virran took.
LSA replies to Naivara: “This tunnel here is well lit indicating it’s recent use. The floor is well trod. There are stairs down so this is something more than just another entrance. Maybe the wizard is this way. But.. my concern was covering our backs so we are not fighting on two fronts when it comes to battle.
if we go down this tunnel we are at risk from what we don’t know about here. I think before we rush off in any direction we should investigate the other tunnel to the west to see what it might offer. It might also be useful to check out the redbrand hideout. Methinks if we could take some alive they might add to the knowledge of the comings and goings we gleaned from Shawn. They may even be able to add to Shawn’s map. Killing is easy. While it takes more time to convince our foes to spill their stories, the knowledge we might get through persuasion or intimidation could be more useful than a silent corpse.
Regarding the scroll... it is certainly worth a try, though it’s exact purpose seems a bit obscure. If it foresees the future as you say, do we need to say “down this tunnel or that”? Could it not tell us more generally if we will find the wizard? If yes, then perhaps the tunnel we select is irrelevant.”
After some thought about what is happening in the cavern, LSA goes on to say: “It seems Brandywine has decided to check out the redbrand hideout. If we want more information from the perhaps we should follow before he and Virran kill any remaining bullies. I’m amazed at how easily people with armour leap a five foot gap without falling in!
Shawn never said how many. The map only includes a few cots. Either they work in shifts, their numbers are small or their is not their only accommodation in here. Perhaps here is the best chance to capture one or two as their numbers ar3 likely to be low. Let’s give it a try. Maybe they know why the nothic was Put here. Who knows. Maybe it was to stop adventurers getting to the tunnel I looked in.
if we do follow Brandywine and Virran I’m going to use the bridge night hawk crossed.”
"If I may ask, Miss Naivara, what is considered a substantial sum of coin? May I request my share perchance? Minus the cost of the potion you kindly gave me earlier of course. What other goodies did you find down in the hole besides a magic sword, a scroll and a couple of potions, of which kind by the way?
“I am very surprised you would ask for coin semantics in the middle of enemy territory, Stig. I wonder, would you be sharing what you found?”
”Your share will be a seventh of 120, which is far less than what you owe us. We shall meet and do some mathematics after this mission is over, should we make it back to the inn. I am doubtful that will be the only coin found.”
”Now, I for one don’t believe Stig and Brandywise are leading us in the right direction, but I do hope my willingness to be open and share the treasure I found shows that I am a team player, here. I’m not here to find riches. In saying that, we are only beginning this war on the Wizard and his men and I am not naive enough to think any one of us can win the battle on their own. We need to have each other’s backs and stick together. I hope you all follow.”
Naivara sorts her belongings and follows Virran and Brandywise, carefully crossing the North bridge, not wanting to take another fall again. “No point in stealth now,” she thinks. “The wizard is probably twenty miles away by now. But, I’m not returning to Sildar without cleaning out every room in this place.”
You enter what could only be called a storeroom or work area at the northern end of the natural cavern. The walls are similar to those most southerly corridor you saw leading west, with dressed stone block walls and a flagstone floor. Several barrels are stored against the walls here, along with a number of empty crates, straw for packing, hammers, pry bars, and nails.
I search each of the barrels, hoping to find treasure, but maybe an apple in a pinch. I also take all the nails and the hammer and store in my pack for future use. Once i've used the crowbar to open the barrels/crates, I store it - looks good for throwing. I take particular care examining the North East corner, as (according to DM map) the wall looks different (though this could just be DM using the wrong line weights)
The dressed stone corridor continues to lead east, around 40 feet in total, until you arrive at a stone well that blocks your path. From Shawn's sketches, you are fairly certain this is a facade or secret door, so study it more closely. A gentle flow of air comes from underneath the door, and with a gentle push, the door pops open and swings toward you.
The door opens to reveal a five-foot-wide landing at the opposite end across a large cellar. Two flights of stairs allow access to the lower cellar where you stand. Another door stands beneath the stairs to the north. A large stone cistern occupies the western part of the room, whose walls are lined with kegs and barrels. To one side of the cistern, another door way leads west.
The room is empty and no noise can be heard except a soft trickle of water into the cistern.
Your careful searching pays off. The space to the north-east seems unusual, so you search a little more intently. Pushing against the stone, you feel a slight 'give' in what should be a solid wall. This pushing causes the door to open slightly in your direction, revealing a corridor 5 feet by 15 feet wide and a door direction opposite the where you stand.
Whilst scrabbling through crates, you carelessly toss some straw onto the ground. It is the straw that catches your eye, not the contents of the crate (which is mundane to say the least). Ever so softly, the straws flits across the flagstones. Yet rather than to the cavern as you'd expect, the straw drifts to the south western corner and stops against the wall. Searching here reveals a second secret door way.
The barrels and crates are nailed shut, but careful investigation locates a chisel and hammer stashed behind those immediately in front of the secret door. Leaving the tools for the time being, Virran moves to study his face in the water. (OOC: I think you want a perception check here, instead of investigation - might be my fault from earlier info... are you investigating something you know to find out more, or search to see if anything is there? Given the natural 20, I'll use that for your perception check instead).
This rectangular reservoir is clean and filled with fresh, cold water. Looking closely, it appears 10 feet deep. The rim is 2 feet about ground, leaving the remaining 8 feet to be sunken below ground level. An unusual shape catches your eyes: a waterproof satchel hands from a submerged rope along the southern wall of the cistern.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Night Hawke softly pads up to the door from the first secret doorway she found. She listens there to see what she can hear, and peers through the cracks/keyhole to see what she can see.
At a moment when there would have been enough time to pause and use a scroll, but not enough time to ask a valid question of someone who is all but a stranger, Stig is confused by the rebuke he received. Trust and companionship was growing with this group, as far as he was concerned, but these are still people he has only known for a day. He's been burnt in the past by trusting too soon.
Stig shrugs and follows Brwb. "I've committed to this cause and I'll see it through..." he thinks to himself.

“Or Stig, perhaps you would like to have a go at it? It will only work for a Cleric.”
Naivara pulls out the Scroll of Augury.
