Adray ran his hand through his hair and sighed. "A few of us are from here, but were outside the city when it disappeared." He gives a quick nod towards the other natives. "By chance we ended up at BG and got grouped up to work for the Fists. Long story short our wonderful leader of our fair city," he says motioning to the crumbling buildings around, "made a deal with the ruling Devil here some decades back to not age. All it cost was his soul and all the souls of the city."
He curses under his breath, "We procured the contract and saw it with our own eyes. We made the trip here in hopes of finding a way to reverse all this."
Harkina listened all that with a wide open eyes and it was obvious that only the danger of been so exposed in the middle of the street kept her from hard questioning and protesting. Still, she could not help it but to exclaim: "If High Observer Thavius Kreeg is a tra... I am sorry, you saved my life and you do look like you came from outside world but that news... If he does not protect us now, then who is doing it? Because Elturel is still defending itself! Wait, let me show you where we are hiding and I will explain all I can."
The woman led the party into the tavern (may be vaguely familiar to Fran and Adray, and unfamiliar to Choir) then told everything she knew: "Many of us died when the city was drawn to this terrible place. Still more have died in the days since, from the attacks of terrible creatures, a lack of food and water, and the collapse of many of the city’s buildings."
"Me and my boys have been hiding in the basement of that tavern, for as long as there was enough of food and water. But resently those provisions ran out, and we had to leave the safety to search for more. Sometimes I could see others, with some we even talked. The city has been split in two. I have heard from other survivors that this side of Elturel - the eastern - is the worse off. The High Hall is where everyone goes, I was going to take my boys there too. I thought High Observer is there and that he is working on a plan to rescue survivors and drive away the devils. But you say he is not... Still, someone there is fighting, I know it for a fact. Otherwise devils would take us all already. They rarely kill, but take away. Gods have mercy! Now I understand why - they bring us to their master."
(Fran found out that killed devils still do not leave a body behind, just a handful of dust. )
Choir gives the woman and each of the boys a day's worth of rations.
She turns to Adray. "The High Hall is where everyone goes," she repeats, and adds in Polly's voice, "Then there is where we must go if we want to save it, isn’t it?"
She wonders if the High Priestess would have gone to the High Hall, and the other priests and the grumpy choirmaster. Perhaps it would be better to go there first, and only check out the temple if they weren't there...
She jerks a thumb toward the three civilians and says to Adray quietly, "Come with us...What do you think?”

Fran would pace as she listened. A few angry huffs would leave her nose when Adray would go through the recounts of their story. Though, she was glad to hear there was still some hope, that someone was fighting. But who? Her eyes would wander over to Lulu to see how she was doing and if she had any thoughts about the new information the woman has divulged about the state the city is in. "Any idea who that could be? I mean, I'm all fer makin' our way to the High Hall..." The artificer would glance around, guilty of wondering if there was a way they could help the others trapped on this side, or even consider finding a few more vulnerable to take over... But that would make us a large target no? We'd become vulnerable?
"Gods bless your soul!" Harkina was almost crying when Choir gave her and the boys rations. She immediately hid two and broke one in half giving each kid a portion. "I will be grateful to you as long as I live. We will not be a burden, I promise. I can fight, if a little." She showed her bow and several arrows with silvered tips. "This is from the smithy on the other side. Picked them up on the streets, helps a lot against devils if the devil is alone and you are fast enough to kill it before it gets to you."
"We can stay here for the night. Except, there is no night here - it is always only that orange smoky sky above. I will be ready any moment you want to go."
(Sorry things have been straight up crazy here. In MN and if you watch the news there are riots, fire, looting and all sort of conflicting info being tossed about. I'm not in direct line of fire but have friends in the area... may be less attentive.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Adray looks around at the others, "If everyone is well enough, then lets be going. I know the way." He will wait for any voice their option to stay or delay their departure. Once ready, he will make his way and and start to scout ahead.
((Yeah it is a bit quiet alright. I have been swamped with my new job and trying to make time for the family. It has been a rough couple of weeks, although no riots and fires in Sweden yet. Hope you stay safe.))
Polly sees the mother splitting the ration and hand over 2 of her own. “We might not always be here to help you, so the least we can do is this much.” Then she will then start to try and bond with the children by making some illusions and sound effects with minor illusions as wells as cleaning them all up with prestidigitation. “So what is your favorite food?” She ask them and make the rations taste like their favorite food.
Then she turn to Choir. “Although this might not be the right time, I think I have come up with a new way to make speech easier for you Choir. When we get the time I will find us an encyclopedia and read every word in our language for you. It is going to take some time, but it will be worth it. What do you think?”
Kid'd mind is a very flexible thing. Between Lulu, Polly and the food, Ezo and Brask had no time to be scared anymore. Distraction worked perfectly and two big chocolate pieces instead of rations definitely brightened the gloomy sky of Avernus for them.
Harkina explained the situation. "I ... no, all of us who survived here, were so sure Thavius Kreeg protects us, as he did before... I do not know who else can do it. Hellriders? Ma be them... But if we get to High Halls we will find out."
"To get to the other side we need to cross one of the bridge. There is no ravine there anymore, it looks like Elturel is ... I do not know how to say it even ... floating in the air? There are some kind of spiked binding posts that keep the city bound to the ground below, but we are still high above. Fortunately, bridges survived. Torm’s Blade is closer to us now, but Torm’s Reach might have less guards, they say. May be not, I never checked myself. But there will be several devils guarding each of the bridge anyway. They want to keep us all separated." She though a little more: "There can be demons too. But they fight devils and devils fight them. May be this is the reason Elturel is still in one piece - they do not have time to destroy it".
"The Blood War!" commented Lulu, "endless war for the Hells. Devils kill demons, demons want to take over Hells!"Even death and destruction sounded cheery when came out of Lulu's mouth.
To Choir
I would assume cleric should know that: The Blood War is an ancient conflict between the fiends of the Lower planes. The two main sides of the war are the demons, inhabitants of the evil plane of chaos of the Abyss, and devils, representing the equally evil but lawful realm of the Nine Hells. Neutral evil yugoloths play both sides against one another. The Blood War had raged on since the Age Before Ages, a dark time when the Prime Material Plane had not fully developed. The conflict is massive, spanning entire planes of reality, and hosting an almost infinite number of fiends.
Choir is excited by the idea of hearing every word in the language. "Praise Akadi!" she cheers, waving her arms. Putting them together so they make sense sounds like a LOT of hard work, though she doesn't mention that to Polly.
The Blood War: it was what kept the devils and demons too busy to invade the material Plane. It was a good war to have.
Choir found one thing especially exciting. "Spiked binding posts that keep the city bound to the ground below," she muttered. If they cut those bonds...would Elturel FLY?
(My job just switched to summer hours, so longer hours on week days. Plus, the boss is keeping us pretty busy, not much time for peeking in from there any more! Ordrag was surprised at Lulu. The half-orc had seen battle and had become hardened to it, just as ropes formed calluses on the hands. But this creature who had apparently battled demons in hell looked anything but hard. Ordrag had also seen men who longed for battle, but the madness in their eyes was in stark contrast to Lulu's seeming innocence. Did you enjoy the battles in the Blood War?Ordrag asked Lulu, trying to understand the hollyphant more.

Lulu thoutfully raised her ears and then said with the frightening dedication: "I was helping Zariel to crash the evil here. When evil is destroying evil - it is good. Zariel wanted to destroy all the evil - both sides. She wanted to end this war. Her superiors did not let her, said she has to keep watching only. But she refused, took her army and almost did what others did not dare. And I was with her in the battle. Yes, I enjoyed it. Evil should be crushed!"
(Yes it is a busy time for everyone, for many different reasons, and some the same. I hope everyone is taking care of themselves and their minds. Take all the time you need, any of you. And enjoy your time with your loved ones :) )
Fran would pace thoughtfully, in what she thought was silence. But with her steel defender padding at her side, he made a lot more noise that she realized. Eventually, she’d clue in to her possible distraction and paused to watch Polly’s display to the kids. Not only did she calm them, she was calming her too. The sweet innocence of the children was such a contrast to their environment, but that’s why it was all the more precious. Fran couldn’t help but crack a smile at Polly’s compassion and endearment. She’d pat Brutus and send him off to go entertain the children with Polly. He could probably use it too. Although not a ‘real dog’, he was still a sentient companion to her.
The calm would fade. Slipping out from under her the moment Choir brought the realization that the city was indeed floating. Simply held by chains. She’d gulp, digging her feet into the ground. It’s solid ground. We are on solid ground. We are NOT flying or floating off anywhere... Fran closed her eyes, holding her chin out in defiance to the idea of it.
The artificer would nudge herself closer to the enthusiastic Hollyphant, remembering the amount of comfort she found in her presence and uplifting spirit. Finally opening her eyes and looking to Lulu as she spoke, Fran felt the tug at her heartstrings. Zariel had a vision they both believed in... but something happened. “Evil should be crushed...” She’d simply echo.
After some time to calm her nerves, Fran would make some rounds to check on everyone’s physical wellness to support the kindness her friends have already offered them. She was thankful to be a pack mule for all the extra supplies Choir and the others thought to pack. This fight wasn’t theirs alone. Should anyone need some bandaging, she’d find the right tools to do the patch job. And should she be unable to find local materials such as ripped up curtains for bandages, she’d use some from her own supplies.
Fran would look at Adray, and although something in her gut told her she would not be excited for some moments to come, she knew she’d have to harden up to survive this place. A tough armour is useless if there’s no core to fight back. The artificer would nod to him, confident in the roll of leadership he’s accepted of our ragtag group. “Ready”
Only problem is, where do you stop?Ordrag replied. Maybe Zariel should've followed orders.
Lulu's fervor for righteousness was obvious, but Ordrag didn't share it. He always thought there was too much grey area between good and evil. Which was better, the evil king who keeps his realm in peace and prosperity, or the righteous knight who brings war and instability to overthrow him? If Ordrag had to fight for one or the other, it would be to maintain the peace. He didn't come here to punish anyone for what they'd done to Elturel, just to put things right.

"If Torm's Blade is closer, then let's use that. Sounds as though either way we may have to fight someone or something. Let's get closer, see whats there and reassess our plans from there." Adray says. He will then begin scouting.
Torm's Blade indeed was not all that far, but the streets were less than welcoming. To get used to this gigantic black lightning sending sphere alone would take more than a while, but smells and sounds, as if some constant building-crackings, you could even think you heard some call for help, but with all this noise one can not be sure.
Lulu promised to watch over the kids and you all stepped out of the tavern. Harkina said that simplest way by the large streets would be dangerous - if one patrol appeared here, there can be more. And at first led the party by narrow passageways between the buildings. After yet another turn you got a glimpse of four cloaked figures sneaking out of an alleyway and into a residence, as if trying not to be seen. Close to the point where they emerged in that alleyway you could see a charred humanoid corpse, clutching a longsword in its hand. In the red light of Avernus, the blade was giving that matte soft glimmer of silver.
Ordrag will go and pick up the longsword. Hey fella, he says to the corpse, you don't mind if I borrow this?. He also looks around for the residence, wondering whether the cloaked figures were fellow refugees. Devils don't wear cloaks in hell, do they? he wondered.
