And with a nod, Fran will take her leave out of the room. She’d take Ordrag’s scouting position if he’s going to continue holding Polly. If he wants to hold his position, she’ll take Polly from him.
”From now on I’m going to focus on detecting magic! If you can give me about 10 minutes before entering new rooms I’ll make sure that we don’t get surprised like that again.”
Polly climb up on the shoulders on whoever holds her and start casting detect magic
The door at the top of the stair opened up without a sound, revealing yet another dark corridor that led you into yet another dark, dry, partially collapsed room. You practically stumbled into a stone altar with humanoid skulls and bones piled around it. The top of the altar is covered with dozens of half-melted candles made of black wax, all currently unlit.
Choir feels a sudden urge to light the candles, and decides not to.

Nothing can be seen on the wall behind the altar in the light of Choir's shield. But there are faint magic emanations from both - the candles (very weak) and from the wall itself (stronger). Of necromantic origin, of course.
Judging by the number of candles, this is something of a regular use. And obviously, you have to use the candle to activate whatever magic is in/on the wall.
“This is a standard ritual altar. All I know is that the candle is part of the ritual, but I don’t know what is does. Either we can try it out and if not, then we should try and destroy it.”
Destroying altar would not be easy - it's a block of stone and so is the wall. Candles can be destroyed, of course, but they are not made on place, obviously, but brought from somewhere else (hence, more can be brought if needed).
Choir is dying to know what happens if the candles are lit, but after messing up last time, she's not going to be the one to try it.

Looking at the sturdy structure Adray considers it. "I dont think we can break it now, not without alot of time, noise and effort. I figure we leave it for now and when this shit is done we have a team of clerics come down and consecrate this whole f*in place."
Nibs looks at the alter, swords in hand, and walks up to it. With m he brings up his scimitar and gently knocks over a candle off the table and walks away.
Fran too was curious about what the alter and the wall could of done, but she also understood the desire to press forward. "Alright." She'd watch Nibs knock over the candle and pause, on guard in case that does anything. If not, she'd follow the others into the next area.

Nothing happened - clearly, if there was supposed to be any effect, the candles had to be lit up.
The wide steps led down, back to the foul water. And back to the room you fought two villains not long ago - well, not exactly, but that is the room where the unopened door leads. The ceiling of this flooded room is supported by numerous wooden beams. The air here smells like rotten eggs, a putrid stench that carries beyond the room. Fran and Nibs could recognize the smell (from different experience) as a flammable gas, and could not be happier, the lamp was off and you used safe blessed light from Choir's shied. The only unexplored way out of the room lead to the (eventually) dry and straight corridor - you could see a door at the far end of it and three doors to your right: first two are silent, but behind third one you could hear faint humanoid moans in the room beyond.

(lol playing ‘hot potato’ with Polly.)
just an unstable unicorn.
The retreat was noted. As soon as the last of you left the room, the battleaxe slowly disappeared.

Giving Polly the time needed to cast her spell, Adray will again take point heading up those curved stairs.

Adray will look at Polly and her spell scanning and ask, "If we're safe to skip it then we push on." He will wait a moment before responding.
These fellas like their altars, don't they? muses Ordrag out loud. Glad no-one's 'ere though. Let's push on.

Polly will go around the room to see if she get any pings of magic with her detect magic spell. She will also inspect the altar for any writing.
