As Nym focuses on safely hopping over the small ravine, she looks away for a second, but that’s all it takes. When she look back, she briefly loses sight of the troll, which seems to evade her view in the dense, dark forest. At last glance, it was about 50 feet in front, and although she can’t see it anymore, she does know the general direction it was traveling when she last saw the creature.
And even though Kess let it gain some ground on her when she stopped to cast her spell, she still has eyes on the troll, which continues to charge away with long strides through the trees.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Oh this is getting ridiculous...!" Frustrated, Kess would sheathe Moonpetal and take out her longbow as she continues moving along, hoping to nail the troll in the back of the knee to at least slow him down.
Kess lets fly as she moves along: 19 Damage, if it strikes true: 5
It's a tough shot, lining up her aim while the troll lumbers with quick movements through the trees, but Kess releases the bowstring and watches her arrow sail true and embed itself in the back of the troll's right leg. The creature seems to stumble a little bit before disappearing into the brush.
At this point, Lumen is close enough to see Kess and Nyn standing on the other side of the small ravine. Chrys and Vesper are far enough back that they no longer see Kess and Nym, and Lumen is nearing the far limit of their Darkvision.
After precariously clearing the leap over the ravine, Nym's pace slowed from a spring to a light jog as her eyes flitted over the trees and foliage before she realized that she had finally lost sight of her quarry. Kicking a plant in frustration she spat, "Eilistraee damn that stinking troll!" Chest rising and falling as she tried to catch her breath, looking over to Kess as she fired off an arrow. "Do you have sight of it still?" Letting her hand brush against the elven warrior's shoulder to cast Guidance on her.
((If it helps any, Kess should still be benefiting from Eyes of Night perk that Nym gave her earlier, just before we fought the trolls. Darkvision up to 300 ft.))
"Ngh... I'm thinking we may have no other choice but to leave him be. Gods confound his long legs...!" Kess would sigh heavily in frustration, taking a moment to pause her stride and finally catch her breath. "I think he's trying to draw us away while his injuries heal, so he can attempt to corner us. Regardless, he won't be coming back to bother us any time soon, considering that half of us can wield fire in some fashion or another and troll stink is not exactly the most subtle thing in Faerun. We should return to the others so we don't find ourselves separated in this forest, especially with that dragon about."
Chrys grits her teeth and sighs. "Ain't no helpin' it, I can't keep up with the rest o' ya,"she grumbles in annoyance. Turning around, she begins to root through the forest, looking for her thrown javelins while waiting for the others to return.
Lumen also pauses and helps Kess and Nym across the ravine and returning to camp with Vesper and Chrys. “We’ll have to keep an extra good watch in case it comes back. That was frustrating.”
Turning around, Nym and Kess walk back over the ravine and eventually make it back to Lumen, and then all three return to camp, where Chrys and Vesper are waiting, and standing over the hacked, hammered and burned corpse of the first troll.
Lips pursing in mild concern at Kess' words, the drow shrugged. "Not much we can do about the thing now other than keep vigilant." The two elves began their trek back and Nym made sure to cast Dancing Lights in a horizontal line as far out as she could, casting pale silvery lavender light out so the rest of the group would know the two approaching were them. Wrinkling her nose at the smell of the mostly burned troll as they returned to their campsite, Nym thanked Lumen for the help in getting across. Glancing towards Vesper she asked the group at large, "Should we finish burning the body? Or bury it? Or just leave it and try to find another place to camp?"
"I'd say burnin' it would attract too much attention, but we don't wanna stay here... that corpse'll attract the wrong kinda attention. If there's a cave or a swamp or bog or somesuch 'round here, might be better ta just deposit it there an' let it rot naturally," Chrys suggests. "You or Vesper see one on the way in here?"
Remembering the last few hours of your journey here, you passed through increasingly dense woods until you reached the rocky cliff near your campsite, but you don’t recall seeing any bogs or caves nearby.
Lumen suggests throwing the body down the ravine they will have to cross in the morning to continue on their way, and really keep a good eye out for other critters and beasts and trolls during the rest of the night.
"Good enough,"Chrys grunts, getting to work on the task of disposing the troll -- but not before giving it one final disgusting once-over to make sure it wasn't carrying something of value. After taking care of business, approaches Lumen, covered in troll gristle. "I know you're real tired, but ya think ya can magic some o' this grit off o' me? I don't fancy sleepin' here stinkin' o' troll blood," she grumbles.
Chrys will once again take up a watch during the night if needed, and also get some much-needed rest when she can.
Lumen of course uses prestidigitation to help clean off Chrys and also dispose of any troll blood or soot from the battle, to deter anything that might be interested.
When she searches the burned and mutilated body of the troll, she discovers that it wore a small dingy, mildew-laden, and now somewhat charred leather pouch around its waist. Inside the pouch she finds a bunch of coins mixed in with crumbs, dirt and tree sap, all of which are essentially stuck together in loose, sticky, messy clumps. In all, there are 200 sp total.
With considerable effort, and help from anyone who desires, Chrys is able to muscle and drag the body over to the edge of the cliff and push it over the edge. It falls into the darkness, bouncing and slamming into a few of the small trees and sticks that grow out of the rocks, before landing at the base of the 50' high rock wall.
Returning to your campsite, Lumen cleans the troll filth from her body, and then Chrys sits up to take the next shift. Fortunately, as she sits there looking out into the still and silent night, nothing else emerges from the forest, and her shift ends with no incidents. The same pattern is repeated with the next person, and eventually, the dawn light begins to return as morning breaks over the forest. Since she had a full trance, Nym and Kess are able to fully recover from the events of the previous evening. As of right now, Chrys has not had quite enough sleep to fully heal her wounds and has had the equivalent of a Short Rest.
"Mmm... Good morning, everyone," Kess would say, using a Prestidigitation cantrip to fix her currently wild mane of hair and some of the grime she could feel building upon her skin; though she did her best to smile and try to be uplifting to the others, the journey through the High Forest was certainly starting to show its toll. She looked to the others, taking a moment to address all of them; first, she turned her attention to Lumen and Vesper. "That was some excellent spellcasting last night, Vesper; you're getting to be quite adept. And you are as valiant as ever, Lumen. I... sort of went into my reverie rather quickly after that mess last night. Did you find anything from that troll, by chance?" With that she'd turn to the other two in Nym and Chrys. "Nym... I know you took quite a vicious blow last night. How are you feeling? I hope the wound isn't infected. And good morning to you, Chrys... you had quite the time of it last night. Are you sure that you don't want to rest a little bit longer? I want to save those children, don't get me wrong, but charging in without being at our best against Duskbringer would be suicide."
Chrys looks up blearily. "Eh... I can try ta keep goin' if ya want... wouldn't mind another hour or two o' the shut-eye,"she mumbles, her morning hair a mess again, without Krackle there to braid it into submission. "Still, that dragon knows we're here. If ya want ta press on accountin' on the time, jus' lemmie know."

Nym Durnodel - Aspiring Heroes of Faerûn // Danica Amastacia - Red Dead Annihilation
Right now it is just past midnight. Nym was near the end of her first watch when she spotted the trolls and the battle ensued.
"I'd say burnin' it would attract too much attention, but we don't wanna stay here... that corpse'll attract the wrong kinda attention. Lumen allows a grin at being called valiant - and will also insist that Chrys be allowed to sleep a bit more so she’s fully rested.
