The party sets themselves upon the mage, as Brozznan catches up with him, taking the mage into a hold. Kastor follows up as Sylvester's dagger knock the mage unconscious, going limp in Brozznan's grasp. The battle is over and it is oddly quiet again, despite the mage's manic shouting to the door.
Kastor takes his rope and tie the unconscious mage up tightly, taking particular care to make sure the palms of his hands are together and bound tightly, hoping at least to severely hinder his ability to cast any spells. He then roughly slaps the mage around the face, to wake him.
When he awakes, Kastor will say, "You're either the kind of mage who's so busy with his work that he doesn't realise the effect he's having on the local people around him, or you're the kind of mage who deliberately delves into... distasteful forms of magic, shall we say? At least to most folk... all whilst thinking you have the right to do what you want and to hell with the locals who might be terrified by it.
We heard word of undead roaming and attacking the local village, and were commissioned to look into the reports and put a stop to the attacks. So, assuming you're the one in charge around here, here's my question: How would you like us to put a stop to all this? Nicely, by calmly explaining the situation and you agreeing to stop inflicting the results of your necromancy on the locals, or do we have to use force?"
While Kastor is talking to the mage, Sylvester is smiling while motioning the usual “dagger across the throat” motion but otherwise not saying anything else.
When the man awakens, he seems visibly confused. And after Kastor's questions, he seems to calm down for some reason.
"Well, from where I'm from, such magic is commonplace. Others just find it distasteful for just letting these perfectly fine corpses to waste. And the undead that roamed out were not of my magic, but rather...kept captive down here. When I had my servants excavate the entrance, they were already going about the caves. I found them harmless since I had my servants along with me, the dead do not bother with the dead. I've left my warrior servant to guard the entrance, to prevent any intruders or curious ones away. And as I feel his connection no more, then I'll assume you've also killed that one. And honestly, I haven't even performed any raising since I've entered the temple. As you can see, from the servants you all just killed, I was merely gathering books of my faith. So to answer your questions, I have not done any necromancy against the locals, nor did I intend to before or now. If you seek to use force then you'll be striking an innocent man of faith."

Kastor gives the mage a long look, trying to appraise the honesty of his words. Insight: 18
"Very good. I had hoped to find you to be as reasonable as you are. Forgive our intrusion, and the destruction of your servants. The problem for the locals still remains, however, and since you are not the evil mage they suspect you to be, perhaps you could help us out? Whilst these undead may seem harmless to you, the ones that escaped did attack the villagers. You must surely understand the need for that to not happen again. We need to be sure that they are contained, and that the village is absolutely not under threat again. If we cannot be sure of that, then we are obligated to fulfil our task and destroy them. What can you do to make sure that is not necessary?
These undead that were already here, they must have been raised by someone else? Is it possible that whoever raised them might still be around, and might not have the same good intentions as you?"

Most of his statements are true, but one thing sticks out in particular. If he was the one to discover the ruin, why did he call for help?
"Of course, once I have the books I need, I shall reseal the place. Tis just a matter of closing the door then burying it once more. And for the undead that were already here, I suppose they were the former servants of the passed on caretakers of the temple. Now if you can kindly undo these ropes, so I may gather the texts."
"As I said, I came here with my servants and only my servants. I was merely trying to escape from what I assumed to be looters by going to the next room. Alas, in my search for my faith's texts, I've not unlocked the door to the next room."
Most of the bodies in the room are mummified, the few that aren't lie in a half done state. The books that the zombies were carrying were of immortality and prolonging one's life.
"Feel free to burn them, they're too ancient for me to make use of them. But I suggest doing so after vacating, the smoke would likely suffocate us all."

"Well, that's disappointing. I thought we were getting on nicely. Now I know you're lying to us. You ran to the door and shouted, "We've got intruders!" You certainly weren't shouting that to yourself. Now we'll have to leave you tied up."
Kastor searches the tied up mage most specifically for a key to the door, but just generally searching him. (Investigation: 21)
“We should stuff something in his mouth, to make sure he can’t cast. I didn’t even see another door on our way in. It has to be around here some where.”
The mage's robes hold no keys but only their spell casting focus. "And if I was lying, then they would've opened the door by now." He seems a bit angry as he makes that remark.

Mordekai removes the spellcasting focus, and places it 15ft from the mage, where he can see it.
"Sorry about that. I realise you probably feel a little naked without that - I know I would without mine. But I can't fully trust you right now. If it turns out you've been telling the truth all along, you'll have my sincerest apologies, and you can of course have that back. But for the moment, there's certainly something you're not telling us."
Kastor then moves to the door and looks it over to see whether it's even locked, and if so, how it's locked. (Investigation: 16)
