After a failed save, a target has muddled thoughts for 1 minute. During that time, it rolls a d6 and subtracts the number rolled from all its attack rolls and ability checks, as well as its Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration. The target can make an Intelligence saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Kale will also run away for 30 ft ;)
Save: 1 (only a nat 20 can get him there, as he has -2 to the check.)
One thing was really good bout this place (the city, not the library specifically) - it allowed so many experiments, unavailable in the normal circumstances! Al-Ashari never had a chance to test that spell before, for example: Abolition(save Wis 18) for 29 force damage
Sorcerer
Abolition
(Transmutation)

Damage Customize
Casting Time: 1 action
Range/Area: 60ft.
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 3 rounds
Attack/Save: WIS 18
Version: 2
The caster channels devastating energy at a single target and the air between the caster and target, and 5’ around both, whips about as though in a howling gale. This space becomes difficult terrain for any creature, regardless of abilities that might say otherwise.
On a failed wisdom save, the target is restrained (movement becomes 0 for the duration of the spell) and subject to waves of increasing force energy that rip it apart, rending flesh, vaporising fluids and disintegrating bone or matter. The first wave inflicts 6d6 hitpoints of damage (force) the moment the saving throw is failed. The spell persists for as long as the caster maintains concentration and spends their action each turn on maintaining the spell, up to a maximum of 3 rounds. For each round the spell is in effect, the caster cannot move more than ½ of its movement. On the caster’s second turn, the target takes 7d6 force damage (no save) and on the caster’s third turn, the target takes 8d6 force damage (no save) at which point the spell ends.
During the time the target is restrained, cannot move, be moved, or cast a spell that magically moves it (e.g. Misty Step). If the target’s hitpoints are reduced to 0 by this spell, it is killed instantly, reduced to dust, and the spell ends.
Once the spell is in effect, the caster does not need to be able to verbalise or see the target, although any total cover placed between the caster and target will end the spell. A successful Dispel Magic can end this spell, as does Mordenkainen’s Disjunction.
The target takes no damage if succeeding on the initial save and the spell ends.
"Just leave it be..." Lia tells the others. "If we injure it it will revert and we will be faced with the nightwalker again... Someone help get these spiders off of me..."
Kale walks over to the nightwalker and gingerly picks it up. "I don't know, this fellow could be useful in the right place. I mean, we could tell him to take up an issue of getting a pay raise with the head librarian here. Who do you think would win, a beholder or that thing we just fought?" Though he ponders the possibilities, he still carefully sets the worm on top of the bookshelves, where no one is likely to accidentally step on it. Once done with that, he looks at Lia with some concern. "You'd better stop, or you might injure yourself. Al-Ashari, do you have an idea of how to stop this from happening? Remember that mad woman who ran past us the first time we were at the auction house? She was saying the same thing. I can't believe this is mere coincidence."
OOC: I noticed the Bard subclass I've been playing has been officially archived. Should I recreate Kale with existing classes in this campaign?
Whitegaze will move over to Lia and firmly, but not roughly, grab her forearms and hold them away from her, looking her straight in the eyes, "There are no spiders, there have not been any spiders, that thing was just playing with your mind. Now, you can either snap out of it, or I can hold you here until you do. I'm good either way."
It took some time for Al-Ashari to understand what Kale meant. "Spiders in my eyes!" Finally remembered she. "I am afraid I can not help here - I am no healer. I can try to calm her mind, but would it help... Can not say."
She silently gestured toward Lia and lowered her hand waiting for results: [Tooltip Not Found]
Merric moved out from his flanking position, sheathing his weapons, watching as Kale moved the worm out of harms way. "Well, that be a...oddly disappointin' end to that littl' dustup. Still, at least none was badly hurt, though..." He glances at Lia. "Aye lass, I'm knowin' the thing did somethin' to yer mind but Whitegaze be truthful with ye. There be no spiders, I be assurin' ye." Waiting to see if the words or the magic helps the girl, he stands patiently.
When it is time to continue, he says, "Well, we kin either keep searchin' fer this map o' the stairs or we kin be usin' this book tuh find our way to the Undercity. Me, I'm votin' fer explorin' the library a bit more."
(I‘ll switch Kale over when it‘s cool enough to start up my PC... not handling char creation on a mobile device! Also I‘m not sure if Al-A told us about the book we found being the cure to spider curse, but thought I‘d mention it here OOC in case it was missed...)
Lia has a short term madness, so the spell would not help her now. She has already failed her save and was given the madness level. It lasts for 4 minutes. She does not believe anyone about the spiders and struggles to continue to brush them away, even tearing at her clothes to get rid of them if allowed to do so. She is not so far out of her mind to lash out with magic at those trying to restrain her though.
"These rules were against the spiders? I had an impression, those were universal rules. Oh, well. Guess "spiders" could be metaphorical, and it's not like it helps now anyway"

After the spider hysteria is over and both Al-Ashari and Lia seem more normal, the group continues their looking through the library. Is anyone doing anything here before I start the next section of this encounter?

((No, that's the book of fairy tales, that we got in Auction House, told Merric about it and he studied it in the Tavern.))
