"Rearguard? You're late! We just sent out a squad to check on them for not reporting, what the hell happened?" He starts coming down the ladder before you even relive him at his post. He is clearly excited to be done with his shift, even though it isn't quite time for him to leave yet. There's a second guard staying up in the tower.

The first guard makes it down the ladder. "Oh? Nice job, then. I mean, I have no authority and I'm not going to turn you in to a higher-up or anything, but just be careful and maybe don't mention to anyone else that you're the group who caused the whole 'rearguard reporting late' fiasco. Anyway, thanks for the early relief, he'll fill you in up top. Enjoy your next eight. Are... all five of you going up? Whatever, I don't care I need a drink."

The guard disappears into the camp and (whoever wants to) goes up the ladder to the top of the tower. The tower is 20' up and has room for only a few people. All of you could fit but it'd be pretty snug. There's also a horn to sound an alarm if need be. The guard stationed at the top nods. "There hasn't been much going on. We think the last of the stragglers made it in from the raid. Praise Tiamat's glory! There are still several hunters out collecting food, in case they return on your shift. The kobolds are rowdy, but what else is new? Anyway, have a good shift, see you around."
From the top of the tower you can see a little better into the back of the camp, but not much. The little gorge slopes upwards toward the back, so vision in that direction is blocked by more tents. You can, however, see one tent that is larger than all the others peeking above at the back of the camp. You can also see a few small alcove locations along the walls of the gorge that are covered by brush, suitable for getting into without being seen from passers-by on ground level.
What now?

okay I say I befriend an animal send a message to attack from this direction and man the guard towers until they get here and wipe out the whole camp what do you think?
Grinning, responding back to Place, "That's not half bad an idea..." he eyes the walls of the gulch, "If the slopes were tall enough, i'd say we knock a guard tower down in the mouth of it and set it aflame- shoot down into them trying to crawl out. But there's quite a large number here- we might be able to use that as a distraction to search, or to cover ourselves while we slip back to the mares and wagon..."
In regards to "wiping out the whole camp," there are dozens of cultists and kobolds walking around that you can see just from this vantage point. Assuming there are some you can't see, the number of cultists in the camp probably reaches above a few hundred.

I thought we were alone on this venture. Lyria points to the big tent. Could we just look for prisoners and get out of here with as little attention as possible? I noticed a"few small alcove locations along the walls of the gorge that are covered by brush, suitable for getting into without being seen from passers-by on ground level." that we could take. We should take that.
"Agreed, though Kod and I both need to deal a reckoning to this cult... its too many, and not a good day to die, i think..." he nods to Lyria, "I just mean that the distraction is a good possible aid. We find some people or loot and get them to the alcoves and washouts, climb out, and get to the cart and horses."
Kod and Delirious stay in the tower to not raise further suspicion by abandoning the post, while Lyria, Hordkhen and Place' sneak along the North side of the camp while keeping an eye for various things.
Lyria, Hordkhen, and Place' need to roll Stealth and Perception, unless you're trying to act natural through the camp, then Persuasion and Perception.

Place' Persuasion: 5 Perception: 19
While Lyria, Kod, and Delirious provide support from afar as best they can, Place' and Hordkhen stride through the camp like they belong. Being convincing enough in their nonchalant approach to exploration, no one pays them any mind. Wolves in sheep's clothing. As well as they blend in however, they do not discover much beyond tents for sleeping and fire pits set up for cooking game and eating. Somehow, you got turned around in a crowded area of tents and take a minute to get into a clearing and reorient yourselves. You've left the tower out of sight, and believe you are somewhere in the higher elevation part of the camp deeper in, based mostly on the absence of kobolds, nicer looking tents, and lack of fecal matter odor. What are you doing now?
You could try to talk to some cultists, or continue to avoid contact and roll an investigation check. You could also come up with something else.
"mmmmf...." Tar grunts disapprovingly of the entire situation, "See anything?..." he asks Place, while investigating the surroundings for indicators of prisoners or loot movement like heavy wagon ruts and small shackled shuffling strides..

Hmmm not sure while this is not a fine tuned well oiled operation it's still an operation so I'm not sure a "prisoner transfer" play would work let's continue looking for the objectives then maybe wait until our next guard shift and just make a break for it... we should try and secure additional cloaks.
While Place' doesn't notice any cloaks conveniently placed out on clotheslines or anything, he and Hordkhen both notice what appears to be an official guard route, where uniformed cultists walk and the path is somewhat more worn than other places. Following this trail, Horkhen further notes:
The path leading South has a faint noise akin to metal striking stone emanating from it. Upon peeking around some tents you note 4 cultists armed with scimitars that appear to at least have some rank above "initiate" guarding 8 malnourished humanoids that are digging into the rock wall with pickaxes. The Eastern path continues uphill, where you can see the camp's largest tent NE of you, and due East you notice the tops of several large stakes or posts, but you're unable to view more from the lower elevation. There are a few guards pacing around in that direction as well.

"..." Tar nods in agreement- and then notices several things that pique his interest. Wordlessly he nods and points his findings to Place. "Could relieve them next shift- or tell them they're supposed to be on the watchtower since the crew on the watchtower now has been there oh-so-long and are waiting to be relieved..." He eyes over toward the guards he noticed.

We had some kobolds try and run off. We needed to make an example of them to the others. Took our time with the cowards.
