Silgar looks over the map and lets out an exasperated sigh...
uugh..we must have traveled that road half a dozen times by now. i could kill for a change of scenery. what do you say laurentia? do your elven bones crave the wilderness as much as mine? lets spice things up and take the trail through the mountains!
The group's excitement to hit the road and track down the witches has led them to the decision to head over the mountain to shorten their travels.
They depart early in the day heading out of the town into the forest on the outskirts of town. The forest was dense, and young. Its canopy was eclipsed by cypress, sequoia, and hazel, and sparkling light dancing between the branches allowed for colorful sprouts to cultivate the soft, rich soils below. Thick branches grasped every tree, and a mishmash of flowers, which grew in abundance, added more life in the otherwise beige lower level. A hodgepodge of beastly noises, belonging mostly to foraging beasts, resonated through the air, and added to the sounds of the sound of the wind blowing gently through the forest.
As the group traveled up an ever increasing steep trail, they noticed the fauna of the forest began to fade. The previously dense forest, laid with flowers and shrubs slowly became bare, showing the bark roots of the trees. The deciduous trees slowly became replaced with evergreens and the large, bulky branches slowly replaced by thin, skeleton ones.
After a brief lunch, the group found themselves trekking up a steep switchback route that would take them to the peak of the mountain. The trail was arduous of its own accord, but the increase in altitude and visibility made sure that even veteran hikers would be exhausted. The light, already obscured by the fog surrounding them began to grow dimmer. It was autumn after all, and the sun was beginning to set. Picking up the pace the group arrived at the top of the switchback, finding a large, barren area extending at least 60 feet in front of them, before being enveloped by the thick fog. A few large boulders and small rocks litter the area but there is no sign of trees or plants. The light is quite dim now and will most likely be gone within the hour.
OOC: The group can now decide if they want to set up camp for the night or try to continue hiking on.
"Your willingness to travel so far away from society never ceases to amaze me. I suppose the charm of the wilderness has grown on me a bit recently though. Just keep these bugs away from me..."
Ash picks up a fallen branch from the side of a nearby tree and tosses it to a clear area before setting it ablaze (create bonfire).
"I've gone weary from all this walking. Let's find a suitable place to rest before it grows too dark."
" We are not alone in these mountains. It is not man or beast that stalks these hills. We should be on alert tonight." I can take a watch or two since I only need to rest 4 hours.
“ id rather discover what dangers we may face then have it discover us with our guard down. point me in the direction and ill see what lurks in the dark.”
Stilgar summons his mage hand which flips up his hood as he sneaks off into the distance
Laurentia searches the area to the northwest and finds that there is a spot between a few rocks that would be able to shield them from the wind for the evening if they so choose. She also finds various tracks that are not human or beast (OOC This part was already covered)
Stilgar investigates the area to the northeast (OOC this is just to give a relative direction) looking for dangers that may have left the ominous prints around the area. He walks around a large boulder when a strong gust of wind blows his hood off his face. Quickly pulling it back on, a chill and a strong sense of danger freezes his movements. Something is there. Not close, but a shadowy humanoid figure is in his peripheral vision. Stilgar slowly attempts to move back behind the boulder when he falls suddenly hitting the ground. He turns quickly and readies himself for an attack, but nothing. He once again slides his hood back onto his face as the continues to howl.
startled and caught off guard by his own foolishness, Stilgar quickly climbs to his feet and summons four glowing orbs placed around the perimeter where he had seen the shadowy figure.
with his sword drawn and ready to attack he speaks loudly enough where his companions can hear him
“Show yourself! I do not wish to dirty my hands with innocent blood!”
The lights dance around the area where he saw the the figure, but the figure never appears. As the light moves into the fog it seems to find a wall or some barrier not to far into it.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
" We should be able to stay here for the night, but I am worried about Stilgar out alone with whatever was out there. I am going to go check on him. You two lie low I will try to be back before long." She wildshapes into an owl and flies off in the direction she pointed him earlier.
Perception 10
If she cannot find him, she will let out an unusual hoot that Stilgar knows as a signal she is near.
*Gulp* Stilgar swallows hard and nervously pulls at his collar. after giving things a moment to calm down he combines the four orbs into 1 large ball of radiating light and approaches the wall careful of traps along the way
The group is able to hear Stilgar talking to the figure he has seen. Laurentia rejoins with Stilgar as he combines the orbs and head towards the object shrouded in the fog.
Now together, Stilgar and Laurentia advance away from the boulder, letting the light lead them. The fog ebbs and flows around the large dancing orb, finally parting enough to reveal what appears to be a building in the thick mist. From the outside this building looks to be an abandoned and forgotten house. It has been built with bricks, covered in render and has poplar wooden decorations. Tall, rectangular windows allow enough light to enter the home and have been added to the house in a fairly asymmetrical pattern. The fog and dimming light obscures seeing much in the house from this distance (about 30 feet, you two are about 80 feet from the other two now). The building is fairly rounded in shape. The house is partially surrounded by wooden beams and broken carts. The second floor is the same size as the first, but part of it hangs over the edge of the floor below, creating an overhang on one side and a balcony on the other. This floor has a different style than the floor below. The roof is high and square shaped and is covered with brown ceramic tiles. One large chimney lined with stones and mortar sits at the side of the house.

“I’m ready to test this shield in battle. I know they’ll be something along the mountain path to grant me my wish.” Says Darrimus.

" Maybe we should confront this structure with the rest of our party." Suggests Laurentia to Stilgar quietly. She casts Pass Without Trace
Stilgar places both hands on the back of his head and sighs heavily.
“Looks like an old miners house to me. must have been abandoned some time ago...im sure its nothing more then a few squatters.”
he lets out an embarrassed chuckle and grins
”theyre probably more afraid of us then we are of them...”
stilgar makes a quick check for any signs of rogue like symbols or thieves’ cant before using his mage hand to slowly open the door.
”Helllooooo... Sorry to intrude...just a pack of weary travelers looking for shelter through the night...”
Laurentia does her best to keep her eyes on Stilgar as he approaches. She tries to stay hidden for now.
"We are not alone here. Let us join our allies, Darrimus." Ash says, hurrying towards Laurentia's location.
The group rejoins about 30 feet away from the house. Stilgar gives a nod as he moves his mage hand to the door to try and open it.
Please give me a perception check.
