Sericea: (RE Gust cheating) You can certainly try, but you aren't sure how effective it will be and you are fairly certain if you get caught there could be unpleasant consequences...If you decide to try tell me what you are doing to try to hide the spell casting and I will tell you what skill(s) to roll. I could see it being stealth, perform, deception, or something else entirely for the doing it surreptitiously part. For the effectiveness of the spell I will probably have you make a caster check...so d20+proficiency and spell casting ability.
Birel: Grok nods as you make your choice. "Looks like trying to find someone else won't be a problem. Here comes Ratline, he always likes to make a toss, I bet he'll be in."Ratline comes up and presses a gold coin into her hand as she gives you a wink. "Tol' ya." She turns to the rest of the group and addresses the crowd in a raised voice."Alright then you lazed sea crabs! We have our first match. A fiver one toss tween these uns tonight. If'n you got side bets let me know now. As you already know all side bets are two to one odds, so if your pony wins you triple yer money!"
To anyone doing math 2:1 odds on the side bets is a bit unfair when if everything were equal any one contestant has a 1:5 chance of winning...but hey, house always wins right?
The four other contestants and Birel line up, tonight the tossers will be Birel, Rosie Cusswell, "Ratline" Rattsberger, Shivikah, and Tam "Narwhal" Tate. As they do so shouting begins around the deck as Grok starts taking up coin and writing down bets on a piece of slate. Most of the bets are made in copper and silver, but you see a few gold pieces being thrown in every once in a while as well. It is hard to keep track without seeing what she is writing, but you would guess Grok has taken in somewhere north of 25 gold pieces total just on the side bets...maybe much more than that.
If anyone would like to place a bet on Birel or one of the others they can do so now. Birel, please hold off on making your Dex or Str roll for this until at least tomorrow at about this time so people can have a chance to bet. Once your roll is made betting will be closed. I will then come in and make the NPC rolls and see how the hog lobbing goes. Also, did you want to try to get the others to up the entry fee for a bigger prize, or are you just going in at 1 gold?
James: You wander about for a bit until you find Sandara sitting and watching a pair playing Heave in the rear area of the main deck. As you walk up Jack Scrimshaw goes down and Tilly Bracket claims her prize to a round of applause from the crew looking on. Sandara looks up at you as you approach. "Hey James. Heard you did good work down in the Bilges today. Pull up a crate and have a seat. You look like a man with something on your mind."

Sericea ponders whether she could focus some wind energy to "help" Birel out, but given her rough day and the state of her stomach, decides not to tempt fate. She does sit and watch the match though.
She notices Ratline bantering with Birel and the others before they throw, and decides to try to chat him up. She sees Rosie there too and notices she is much friendlier than before. Sericea starts a whooping cheer for both of them when they toss the hog, just like she used to rile up the crowd at the tavern when drinking contests broke out.
Seri will attempt to influence Ratline, with Rosie's help for +2 if possible. Depending on how the game goes, not sure if this could be performance/persuasion/etc.
James pulls up a crate next to Sandara, "Thanks, though I didn't really do much down there. A great sword is hard to swing in small quarters." He pauses and thinks for a minute before speaking up again. "How long have you been on this ship and how well do you know the rest of the crew?"

Rosie certainly can provide help, what skill check you use will depend on what you want to do to influence him...Could be performance, persuasion, deception, maybe something else entirely that I'm not thinking of. You tell me. :)

"I've not been aboard more than 3 or 4 days longer than you. From what I can figure I got picked up on their first night in Port Peril. Seems like most of the crew were wiped out shortly before that...several of the officers as well. Those that do remain from before those days are either very loyal to Harrigan or have been cowed into not talking about it. Ambrose for example, been aboard for more than a year, but won't talk about what happened to the last crew."

Grok whistles appreciatively at your toss as it sails through the air and the hits the deck with a thump before sliding to a rest some twenty feet from the tossing line. One of the swabs runs out to collect the hog and mark the point where it came to rest on the deck with a piece of chalk.
"Tha's nice toss there. I don't think I've seen someone get so far on their first toss before. You played hog lob elsewhere?"
The other crew members line up each taking their toss in turn:
Rosie (toss with Str): 4 Ratline (toss with Dex): 19 Shivika (toss with Str): 7 Tam "Narwhal" Tate (toss with Dex): 2
Rosie is up first, and with her sleek muscular arms it seems like she is a shoe in to win the whole thing. Unfortunately her grip on the hog is not very good and when she goes to toss the led bar flies nearly straight up in the air instead of in an arc. It lands with a heavy thud, cracking one of the beams of the deck as the assemble crew wince and groan. There a few mutters that the Stitchman is going to be unhappy about the damage.
Next up is Ratline who gets off an excellent toss that for a moment looks like it will pass Birel's but grinds to a stop just a foot short.
Afterwards the tall darkskinned Shivika steps to the line, but doesn't even manage to get the hog to fly half as far. She stops off to a crate angered at her performance.
Finally Tam takes his place at the line, but manages to repeat Rosie's performance. Again the hog flies nearly straight up in the air before crashing down just 2 feet away from Tam. There is another loud crack and a section of the plank actually breaks free and falls, revealing the lower deck below. There is more groaning and someone quickly pushes a crate to cover up the hole.
"Well, despite a pitiful performance by a few of our more seasoned competitors, there was a bit of a nail bite there at one point. Birel, looks like you are our winner! Well done!"
She distributes your winnings to you as well as the second and third place competitors.
You paid one gold in and get three gold back as first place for the match. Nice toss! For coming in first place you also will receive advantage on social skill checks against your fellow competitors for the next 24 hours. You can congratulate the second and third in a spirit of good sportsmanship or commiserate with the lower part of the card for the unlucky toss.
Sericea, now that we have seen the results of the game you can RP your social check to influence Ratline...with the +2 from Rosie.

As Rosie hefts the hog, Sericea cheers for their new friend, but as it arcs high and lands close, she calls out that the ship must have lurched at the last minute. After, as Ratline's throw almost reaches Birel's chalk mark, she cheers even louder. After the game, she tries to starts up a chant celebrating Birel and Ratline.
Performance with Rosie: 20
Unfortunately, the syrup turning her stomach makes the cheers seem slightly forced.
Birel: Shivika and Ratline both fix you with the same indignant stare. She is the first to respond, her voice thick with the accent of the Mwagni expanse
"Yous gotten yerself toss lucky elf girl. Next time not so." She takes her one coin consolation from Grok and heads over to a table of arm wrestlers to lay a wager.
Technically you can only attempt to influence one, and an NPC can only be influenced once per night...since Sericea is targetting Ratline I will have yours go to Shivika. She moves from Unfriendlyto Hostile since the check failed the DC by 5 or more.
Sericea: Ratline grins at you with a rodent-like sneer. "I appreciate the effort girlie, but next time cheer like you mean it. And maybe don't look so green behind the gills at the thought of cheering me on eh?"
While a failure, it was only by 1...so Ratline remains Indifferent.
Ventus, Varus, and Builder have all headed to bed after drinking the sugar water and it not agreeing with them. James still has his first evening action if he would like to take it... Birel and Sericea may take second actions in the deep watch if they would like.

During deep watch your actions are limited to Influence, Sneak, or Steal. If there is someone you would like to attempt to influence we generally assume you can find them awake.
Influence*: Attempt to influence a single NPC
Sneak*: Take time exploring one area of the ship. The PC can take time to fully explore one area of the ship. The PC can make a single Perception, Investigation or other skill check with advantage, but must make a check to avoid being discovered.
Steal*: Attempt to open a locked door or locker. The PC must make a check to avoid being discovered.

James rubs his beard, noticing that it is starting to get a bit long for his taste, "Well that is kind of a bummer and I'm sorry you got roped in with this ship and crew." There is sincerity in his voice in the last of his words. James lets out a heavy sigh and rubs his forehead, "Thanks Sandara. I think I'll call it an early night, that rum isn't sitting well with me." With that James will put the crate back where he found it and find a spot below decks to think and sleep. Though, he does check in on Nox before going to bed and while he does; he tries to get any information on Caulky that might be useful.
