Once the group is alone the gnome leans in, "As much as I want to pay my respects to the lady of the town I feel we should get the Chief to take us on. We can stop in on our successful return."

Alden
Alden does not follow the Captain and remains silent as the Captain leaves. Once gone Alden will turn to Corin and say:
"What's he not saying Corin? He has stopped himself a couple of times but, There was something he wanted to say but, wouldn't or maybe couldn't, what is it?" Alden asks.
Anticipating Corin not being so forthcoming, Alden will say: "We can not help if we do not know what it is."
Porkins allows Grin to pat his head, and you all hear a familiar whirring noise as you see his tiny metallic tail wiggling. He notices Captain Graddor leaving the room, and after about a second he leaps up and follows him dutifully.
Corin listens to Alden's question and shakes his head. "I don't know. The Captain 'as always been a bit of prickly sort, but the past few months, 'e's changed a bit. Always on edge, 'e is, and seems to be scared of summat. Don't 'ave a clue, what though. The Captain is right good with the lads, but 'e keeps 'iself to 'iself if you catch my meaning."
He doesn't seem inclined to stick around, and he quickly pops back into the kitchen at the back of the mess, presumably to clean up the meal.
For the first time Alden addresses Grin, with just a nod.
"I agree we need to make a decision. Our mission is to find the doctor but, the mine does bare investigating. Since Valance gets some of it's ore from here, and there is a Cult that is enemy to the State and can summon demons, setting up this shrine or church were Valance gets its ore, it should be on our list. So, which do we do first? Doctor or Mine?"
While waiting for the party decision, Alden will walk back to the kitchen. As he walks through the door Alden will call out, "Corin, How many cultists does this church in the mine have?"
As Detective Lostchild bursts into the kitchen, Corin Brightaxe looks back at you in surprise, his arms elbow deep in dishwater. He stammers for a second, thinking, then manages to say
"I uh, I don't rightly know, sir. They've mostly been recruiting some of the more...worse off of the townsfolk, they 'ave. The decent, 'ard-working folk don't 'ave nothing to do with the Church. Maybe twenty worshippers, a few acolytes and a priest or two. Captain Graddor's been tryin' on the sly to figure out exactly who the priests are, but even the non-believers 'ave been tight-lipped. Not much sympathy for the Engineer 'ere, unfortunately. Its a shame, really because most folks 'ere owe their living to King Brocc and 'is works."
He removes his hands from the dishwater, looks around in vain for a towel and then wipes his hands on his pants. "Are you and the others ready to go to the pass, sir? Its a bit of a 'ike, it is, and if you delay too long, you might 'ave to wait until tomorrow. Unless you want to travel up there at night. Hahahaha." He laughs a deep belly laugh, and slaps his knee.
Nevlav shakes his head and crosses his arms, "As much as I want to see these terrorists put in their place and exposed for their weakness, we cannot loose sight of our directive. Let us away to the mountain path."
"I can go boat' way, but him say right when him say we be s'posed to find de Dock-Tor." Grin says, her accent seems a little off... Too thick maybe?
Yoric stares in concentration for a moment. “Uh.................. yes. What she said. And what Nevlav said. Let’s just go. We’ll complicate it, once it’s complicated.”
Thalion nods emphatically at Nevlav, a smile at last coming to his face.
"I can smell the mountain air already! I can't spend another moment in these stifling walls, I think being stuck in a cave with a bunch of cultists would make me just as crazy as them," he says with a robust laugh.
Corin comes out of the kitchen now, his apron off and in a full uniform. Despite his genial nature, the young dwarf cuts a formidable figure. He wears no armor, and a tonfa club hangs loosely at his hip. He sighs and rubs his hands as he comes out. "Right then. Shall we go? I can give you lot the grand tour of town, I can. Follow me!"
He walks ahead of you, moving at a place that might be a little slow for the more impatient of you. but if Brightaxe notices your irritation, he doesn't let on.
"Up ahead we 'ave Yellow Creek's first department store. You can get almost anything you can imagine, you can, and if they don't 'ave it, they can order it fer you. Comes in within two days, thanks to the locomotive service." His voice is incredulous at the apparent speed of the service. "I been 'ere almost eight years, and town 'as changed so much. I don't recognize it sometimes."
Further along the main street of Yellow Creek as the mine comes into view at the end of the street, Corin also points out the office of the town newspaper The Yellow Creek Radiogram, a small town library funded by the Raskiel family, and the gunsmith, Pock's Pepperboxes. As Corin points this out, he adds. "Pock's a brilliant craftsman, 'e is. Of course, you 'ave to get a permit signed by Captain Graddor before you can buy summat."
As you approach the mine, you see Graddor engrossed in a heated conversation with a human female in a uniform and a hard hat with a pair of goggles hanging around her neck. Its hard to tell much else about her as you pass by, but you can see her face is covered in streaks of dirt. Graddor makes eye contact with you as you pass by, and he gives you the slightest nod, but he makes no moves towards you, instead he seems to steer the woman away from you (Thalion -- as you are proficient in perception ,you can try to pick up some of their conversation as you pass by if you wish-- make a roll).
Corin leads you on a loop around the mine, until you reach a rocky pass. There is a sign near the pass that reads "Corropolese Pass. Travelers Beware."
Corin stops short and gestures to the path. "'ere it is. Normally, we wouldn't let folks up 'ere, but I'm sure you lot can 'andle yourselves. Dr. Aleksei is s'posed to live right around the Alpine line of the mountain. 'Tis about a three 'our 'ike. Once the vegetation turns to lichen and moss and such, 'e should be right there, 'e should. Meself or Mr. Goldenrod, our tracker, will be floating around 'ere keeping an eye peeled for you lot on your way down. Oh, and one thing -- if it starts getting dark, find shelter as soon as you can."
(OOC -- So the hike up the mountain is going to be a skills challenge. Each hour, one of you is going to take the lead, describe how you are utilizing one of your skills to guide the party, and roll for that relevant skill. I'll set the DC based on your description, You succeed on the roll and you make further progress up the mountain. Fail and I roll a d6 on an Encounter Table I drew up.
Two other notes. The same person can lead up to two times, but after their second time/roll, they will take 1 level of exhaustion. Secondly, the DC will scale upwards the closer you get to night time, so if there are a lot of fails, its going to be harder to get out of the hole. Does this may sense?)
"No one's rightly sure, sir. A lot o' folks in the mine say its a banshee. A spirit of a bee-yoo-tiful elf maiden what was killed in the initial excavation of these mines wailing for vengeance against the mine owners that got 'er killed. Captain Graddor reckons its a bunch o' ogres or bugbears or summat big and stupid."
He leans forward conspiratorially. "Personally, I think its some sort of bird creature. Maybe an 'arpy, or a roc 'as its nest up in the mountains. Whatever it is, though, its nasty. Lady Raskiel lost a whole team of surveyors up there last year. No one's been up there at night since. Except Dr. Aleksei..."

“Split the party?” Yoric suggests

Grin puts a hand down idly to the Porkins. "Be right to be wary Mon Ami." If Porkins allows she'll pat it on the head.

Totally out of his element Alden will ask: "What is so bad about the night up here?"
"No one's rightly sure, sir. A lot o' folks in the mine say its a banshee.
