"I can send Sabastian to look into the chimney, but he won't be able to fly down them, his wings are too-large." She glances to the arrow slits. "I could have him squeeze through the arrow slits though, and we could see if there is a way, once inside, that you could open the gate."
Looking through the portcullis bars, Xarroth sees a 15 by 30 foot space surrounded by stone walls with arrowslits on both sides and long narrow openings in the ceiling above. Huge double doors stand at the far end, they seem to be made of wood with metal reinforcements, but it's too dark for the dragonborn to be sure.
Sabastian flies around the chimneys. Most of them are collapsed and blocked, but there are two large ones still standing. Seeing through the owl's eyes, Lia thinks that they are big enough to climb down into the mountain. And while Sabastian could drop down slowly, it would be hard for him to fly back up.
Going into an arrowslit, Sabastian finds himself in a large dark room filled with ballistae. Two pointing at the space before the portcullis, where Xarroth is peeking, two point at the space between the portcullis and the double doors, and three others point at the fortress' inside. There is a single door in this room and a staircase leading upwards. There are no people or animals here, and Sabastian does not hear any sound coming from the inside.
"Looks like there are two chimneies that we might be able to climb down into." Lia offers to the group. "At least then we can always have the rope to climb back out if needs be." She shrugs and summons her owl back out from inside the fortress's arrow slit. "I vote we climb up and go in through one of the chimneies."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rhok nods in agreement "Seems the easiest way in" and will give a quick glance around to see if anything looks disturbed in the vegetation or paths around the fortress to get a feel if anything recent has been through, and will then prepare his rope to scale up to the chimney
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rain has recently washed up the rocky slope, making it impossible to find tracks on the way up to the chimney. Xarroth ties an end of his rope around its base, dropping the rest inside and starts to lower himself into the dark fortress.
OOC: everyone please make a DC 10 Strength (Athletics) check to climb down the chimney, with advantage as you are using a rope. Failing means that you slip and crash into the fireplace taking 12 bludgeoning damage.
The torch falls 25 feet to the fireplace below. Climbing down into the mountain fortress, Xarroth recovers it, illuminating a 15 by 25 feet room.
A steel shield hangs above the mantelpiece, it bears a dwarven gauntlet clutching a handaxe. There are a few intact pieces of furniture, three cots, a table with chairs and empty footlockers. Everything is covered in dust and you can clearly see the tracks that you are leaving in the floor as you walk around.
A single door on the north western corner is the only exit you see other than the chimney you just used to get here.
OOC: all of you gain inspiration. You can spend it to gain advantage on an attack, saving throw or ability check. I'm not going to draw a map, but will describe the rooms as you enter and the available exits at the end of each post. Rhok's DC 10 Strength (Athletics) is still pending.
Dusting herself off after the climb down, Lia holds up the hem of her tunic as she walks across the room, a look of distaste on her pretty face. "Guess the cleaners have not been in here for a while." She mentions as she looks around the room. "Nice shield there, anyone need it?" She asks as she spots the shield.
"Preparation for thievery is rarely unwise."Xarrothstands at a safe distance away from Lothlién, but in a way allows direct light from the torch to reach his investigation.
The door has a simple brass handle and a barrel bolt on this side, currently unlocked. Lothlién does not see anything unusual about it and this room seems to be some kind of sleeping quarters.
Turning the handle and slowly opening the door, you see a large chamber, at least 50 feet across. Arrowslits on the northern side let some sunlight in. Great pillars support the stone ceiling, thick webs are strung between them. You see a staircase going on the far side and a few cauldrons in the center of the room. Dust covers everything and you only hear some faint scrapping, but it's hard to tell if the sound is coming from the inside or through the arrowslits.
"This place definitly needs a cleaning crew." Lia comments as she steps out into the larger chamber. She wrinkles her nose as she watches the footprints she leaves in the dust.

In the same room that Sabastian entered through an arrowslit there is a whinch where a chain can be rolled.
"Sounds good enough to me" Lothlién answers in agreement with Lia's plan.

Xarroth nods with the others and looks to get in through the chimney, offering his rope if it is needed.

Just before Xarroth climbs down, he lights a torch with a huff of flame and drops it down the chimney.
If all seems clear, he descends down the rope...

Strength check: 1
(Waste of a nat 20, but Lia rolled a 19 (20 - 1) for her athletics check. Rolled in the Game Log.)

"I don't think I can make proper use of such shield" Lothlién says, showing his skinny arms.
He then moves towards the door and checks for traps, mumbling "Damn dwarves aways have some tricks..."

"I think that's us" Lothlién answers to Lia. He makes his way to the stairway, careful about traps or monsters.
Rhok follows along, crossbows at the ready. He'll ook into the cauldrons to see if theyve been recently used
