"Where can we find the kings?" Lia asks the inventors, ready to get to the bottom of this one way or another. "We can help search for the lost ones as well, once we speak with the kings."
"Where can we find the kings?" Lia asks the inventors, ready to get to the bottom of this one way or another. "We can help search for the lost ones as well, once we speak with the kings."
Gnerkli looks at Lia and repeats "you have to go in that tunnel, take a right at the crossing and continue all the way to a double door decorated with a crown."
The gnomes wish you well in your meeting with the king. You follow their directions, seeing two other tunnels at the crossing and one closed door on the last section before you arrive at a set of ornate double doors, with a royal crest carved on them depicting a crown surrounded by a circle of interlocking gears.
Knocking on the door you hear a response in gnomish, hearing no response in their language, the voice switches to common "who goes there? identify yourself!"
"Is it your majesty the king whom I speak to?" Lothliénasks, trying to use his best formal language. "We are visitors coming from Phandalin. My name is Lothlién, and we would be greatly pleased to have an audition with your majesties!" He looks to his companions with a face like 'was that alright?'
The voice at the other side of the door replies "we are king Korboz. Normally we would grant you an audience, as Phandalin is among our most trusted allies. But there are grave matters happening here and it would be unsafe for us to come out. There is a shapechanger nearby, it almost got us in the throne room. We were lucky to retreat here safely with king Jebbedo."
King Korboz replies back from behind the still closed door "we saw the beast with our own eyes. We were sitting in our throne thinking about royal matters when the carpet started slithering towards us. It opened a wide mouth with too many teeth to count, so we made a tactical retreat into our private chambers. On our way here we took king Jebbedo and had to force him into safety. He insists that the monster was a figment of our imagination, but we saw it!" the king's voice calms a bit "we will not be leaving our chambers until the beast is dealt with."
"I believe it safe to say that our group has become rather proficient in dealing with unwanted monsters. Would you say it is still in the throne room?" Rhok asks through the door
"That was the last place we saw the monster, but that was days ago" king Korboz replies "for our own safety, we dare not step away from here. You should warn our people that they are in danger."
You faintly hear a second voice inside the room "who are you talking to? why won't you let me out of this chair?"
Lothlién talks in a quiet voice, so only his friends can hear him "Well, the king does sound a bit crazy and probably isn't handling this thing properly.... but it also makes sense. Maybe the disappeared people were attacket by this same beast. Should we hunt it down and come back here later?"
"Unless we want to break down the door, I don't think we have any other option." Lia says in a soft voice, only loud enough for her companions to hear. "Maybe we can check the throne room first, if it is not there, then we may end up needing to get some of the gnomes to help with the search."

Xarrothclears his voice before raising it slightly for the king to hear, "But your majesty, how will you know if the best is slain? Are you just to take our word for it?"
The dragonborn then leans close, but doesn't touch the door, to try and make out what he think he heard...

You hear king Korboz speak in a hushed tone "I told you already, there is a beast trying to eat us, I'm keeping you here for your own protection." Then in a normal voice he answers "you should present the slain beast to us, then we would grant you the audience you requested."

Xarroth rests his hand on his chin, "And why does Nyx go stargazing? One can presume not far from here."

"I'm not really sure, I prefer to spend my time here in the workshop or sleeping" replies Fibblestib.

Lia thanks the gnome and heads off, following the instructions.
"Thanks for the information. We'll get back to you when we have news" Lothlién says, following Lia.
"Thank you! Your work looks and sounds amazing, hopefully we can be of help" Rhok says before turning and following the others

Xarroth gives Lothlién a small, silent applause and mumbles in Draconic, "There is always an exception."
With few gusts of a spell, his clothes are cleaned up and there is a sudden gentle zesty fresh scent in the air.

"A shapechanger you say?" Lia asks with a frown, glancing to the others. "What form did this thing take when it almost got you?"
"Also, how can you be so sure?" Lothlién adds to Lia's question
