The unexplored passage going east from the inventors' workshop goes downstairs and turns, leading you to a new room. On your way you poke at the walls and lamps, but they don't move at all.
This new room is divided in two sections. You are standing in a small atrium that leads to a bigger part of the room. In the atrium's south wall is a brass lever. From there you can hear a rumbling noise and see the ceiling of the bigger part, but its floor is covered in mist. On the east wall of the bigger part is a doorway that seems to lead ouside, given the bright light that shines from it.
"So the King is concerned with a carpet, but yet they have no doors or gates to prevent anything from wandering in here just like we did? I'd be worried about Orcs, goblins, mamticores etc if I was them" Rhok states
"I know, right? It's a miracle that they are still alive" Lothlién says, walking up to where the mist starts. "So, I think we could poke around and then pull this lever, so if it opens another door we don't see, we are already done here. You agree?"
If his companions agree, he'll walk through the mists, using his spear to poke his way before every step.

Lothlién pokes the mist with his spear. There is a crashing noise and the spear is pulled out of his hand as if something grabbed it. It rattles around the room, disturbing the mist, and stops moving at the other end, near the door. You catch a glimpse of a wooden bar just below the mist when the spear passes through them.
Rhokreadies his crossbow and slowly begins approaching the mist from the side trying to get a better view of the wooden bar "Lothlién, are you ok?" Rhok asks his companion
"Who is hiding in the mist!" he also speaks in an intimidating growl

Perception check: 21
Sorry if it was unclear before. When Rhok's spear passed trought the room, it disturbed the mist and you were able to see a wooden bar somewhere in there. Now that the mist is still again, you can't see it anymore.
You still don't know where the sound is coming from. But notice that it's been going on for as long as you have been in this room, far longer than what a living creature could produce.
Lothliénuses Minor Illusion to create the image of a rat, walking up to the source of the noise. "let's see if it's hungry"
The illusory rat moves into the mist, disappearing from view. The rat moves around while the spell continues, with no effect on the mist nor on the rumbling sound.
Lothlién now is more inclined to believe that's some kind of gnomish contraption then their target. "Anyone has an idea to clear out the mist? I think this isn't the shapeshiter, but I also thnk it's not safe to walk in there not seeing where we step"
Xarroth growls with slight frustration. He walks into the creating a puff of wind to disturb the mist enough to see if its safe to take another step or see the souce of the things that took Rhok's spear!
Xarroth's wind disturbs the mist. You can see two rotating wooden contraptions that were hidden in it. They are set up with one rotating clockwise and the other counterclockwise, forcing anyone they catch out of the room.
One of them is covered in spikes that caught Rhok's spear.

"That would be perfect, but it only looks like the spear has been it's only meal."
Rhoktries to see if he can see the direction that it might throw someone unlucky enough to get thrown by the machine, and if anything, droplets of goo, blood may be noticeable
"Would it be too much luck if the shapeshifter was thrown away by this thing?"Lothliénasks out loud, but kind of to himself.
He also try to notice if there's a way to get past the gears and not get caught by them
The contraption is made in such a way that anyone entering the room will be caught by it. Each one covers about half the floor, with some overlap in the middle.

You can see from the rotation direction that these act like turnstiles, forcing everyone out of the room through the door leading outside.

"Or else we found some contraption of the gnomes." Lia remarks, moving a bit closer as her companions move in on the source of the noise.
