The Wildemount Irregulars (2020)

Both attacks hit.  Is Silent doing non-lethal damage, or just killing this guy?

(OOC:  There's no need for the Echo to disappear, unless you want it to.  That's still within 30 feet of Silent.)

Silent will be doing non-lethal damage, if possible. 

There's a gasp from two of the other fighters as the leader drops to the ground.

The bear, however, is untroubled and continues to attack Magnum:

Attack: 19 Damage: 5
Attack: 12 Damage: 11

Tooth and claw both scrape ineffectively against Magnum's metal body, though the screeching sound of claw against metal is horrifying as it echoes around the cave.

Magnum is up.

Magnum looks at the bear, sighs and punches him in the face with his Thunder Gauntlets.

Attack: 23 Damage: 5

Sorry.  I'm not a big fan of fighting trained animals.

The bear takes the damage in its stride.

The half-elf disengages and backs away.  Stop!!  Stop this.  He turns to the others.  Shit!  He disengages runs over to the fallen leader.

What about the bear?  the halfling asks, taking care to keep Silent between him and the bear.

Kill it.  Or let it go.  I don't know. You don't think this is done now?  the half-elf replies.

The human swears, and he and the halfling both disengage and move away, to the back of the cave.  They haven't dropped their weapons though, and regard both you and the seemingly out-of-control bear with some anxiety.

Silent is up.

Silent will run towards the bear and command his Echo to do the same. He'll position himself directly above Magnum on the grid , and the Echo will be adjacent to him. 

He will strike out at the bear with his greatsword and Unleash Incarnation a second time to have the Echo do the same. 

Silent's Attack  26 Damage: 26  
Echo's Attack  20 Damage: 16  

Silent will then burn his Action Surge, taking an additional swing at the bear's flank and using Unleash Incarnation a third time to have his Echo replicate this strike.
 
Silent's Attack  20 Damage: 11  
Echo's Attack  24 Damage: 13 

If applicable Silent will try to avoid slashing the bear's vital organs, aiming for a non-lethal knockout instead.  

Ooh, make a Nature check on the anatomy of and non-lethal take down of the brown bear.

You seem to have managed to stun the bear.  You have no idea how long this will last.

Magnum is up.  

Magnum also tries to do non-lethal damage while striking the bear with his Thunder Gauntlets.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.  I didn't mean that the bear is stunned, I meant that Silent has knocked it unconscious, but unlike with a humanoid when you could estimate how long it will be until they wake up, he can't predict how long the bear will be out.  If Magnum still wishes to attack, it will be an auto-crit and pretty much kill the bear outright.

(OOC:  Ah, then no, he won't hit he bear.)

Magnum points at the others who are at the back of the cave.  Please be so kind as to put this bear back in its cage and lock it.  I can revive your leader once you've done that.

Combat is over.  The half-elf and halfling rather nervously, and perhaps a little sheepishly, push and pull and generally shove, ever so gently, a large unconscious bear into a cage.  The human, satisfied that the leader is not in imminent danger, comes over to speak to you.

Um.... that might not be the best... he's a bit... reckless, you know?  Eager to prove himself.  Heh.  He forces a laugh as he turns a little red from embarrassment.  Look, we shouldn't have attacked you, that's on us, I get it.  I also get that you came here to investigate a crime, and not to commit one, right?

We were asked to look into who was damaging some grain silos. We weren’t asked to attack or bring anyone to justice. Are you the ones who attacked the silos or were you also hired to do this?

I... suppose you could say it was the bear that did it, the man says.  But we, or rather he, he indicates the halfling who scowls back, controlled the bear, so... he trails off.

Now I’m curious, and again, we’re not here to harm you.  Why?

I shouldn't really say. Besides, Tember Husseldorf will know, as soon as you tell him that one's name.  The man points at the unconscious leader.  So.  Tell your employer that Phinan Husseldorf was behind the damage.  Take something... I dunno... his jacket maybe, as proof.  Or one of his rings.  Not the gold one.  Tember will probably pay you double to leave town without telling anyone.  This is family business.  Understand?

I see.  Well, I will need to confer with my associate here.  Magnum turns to Silent.

We have a name, which is what we were asked to get.  I say we take his coin purse and a ring and let these people be on their way. 

Magnum turns to the others.

The money is for the damage to me personally, mind you.  I'm trying not to be petty about this, but I'm peeved at that bear and your boss in particular.  The bear is a tool, but I think the boss should have to pay into this a bit.

Silent scratches his beard, having sheathed his sword and done a few stretches following the fight. 

What if we pick up this potato sack (he gestures to the leader's unconscious body) and take him over to Tember, coin purse and all? Unless I heard wrong, you said this idiot is a Husseldorf? Seems like a family reunion might be in order, no? 

I ain't got no real issue with you lot, but I'd rather see your leader behind bars. Don't want to have him coming after us for revenge and siccing that bear on us while we're asleep, you know?

I'm not against bringing the guy in, but I get the impression our employer might be more embarrassed than grateful.
