Robwin turns slightly towards Vimak (to speak out of earshot of the gnomes) “I’m as eager to move on as you are... but don’t forget, the Townmaster would have us seek the gnomes’ magical aid against the dragon. Their magical tinkering is legendary. It could mean the difference between success and defeat! Don’t ask me what ‘shapeshifting’ has to do with all this!! But lets hear them out?... I say we give them one, maybe two bells?... Then, I’m with you and we make our haste”.
(Shapeshifter is a general term used to describe creatures that can shift their shape. It could vary from changelings, dopplegangers, mimics etc.)
Pog and Ulla both open their mouths to answer before closing them, looking at each other and frowning. Pog scratches his head. "Uh... well actually we don't know all that much. We were just ordered to attack shapeshifters on sight by one of our kings." Ulla nods. "Yeah, we don't know much... you should talk to our king instead!"
Vimak nods. "That's right, Robwin. Thank you for reminding me. Maybe we can trade helping them for their magic, or something." He looks at the gnomes. "So, your king?" He steps away from the wall. "Will you take us to him?" He will continues stepping toward them, hopefully through the doors.
If there’s a chance while we head towards the King, Robwin will try to engage Pog and Ulla (with barely concealed fan-boy-dom) “Kind neighbours! No... Arcane Masters!... I’m a wizard, not really, oh... Just a student really! oh my. But I’m learning. I’m trying to learn. MAGIC! Your wands: are they arcane foci of some kind? Or do they hold spells? May I see one? Do you have magical texts? Scrolls?...I’m sorry, how rude, I’m Robwin... Robwin Windrobe, nice to meet you...”.
Prosper smiles as the gnomes calm down. "Glad we've sorted that out. I'm Prosper, pleasure to meet you!" She introduces herself, before jumping to add, "Yes, we were wondering if you'd be able to spare any magical aid for Phandalin in case the dragon comes a-knocking. But you have a shapeshifter problem, you say?"She seems to consider it for a moment. "Don't know much about shapeshifters, but I'd be glad to help all the same! Lead us on to your king.
(Pog will be brown font and Ulla will be blue font just to make it easier to tell them apart.)
As the group agrees to meet with their king, the two begin to lead the way through the caves. Pog speaks up first. "So, the king is currently on the other side of the caves, we'll need to take the bridge across. Its a long walk." Ulla nods. "Yeah, real long way. Oh, also, I guess we should mention... our king has been acting weird lately."Pog clicks his fingers. "Yep, the king locked himself in his bedroom with our other king." Ulla continues to nod. "Yeah, he's been acting super weird and paranoid and we don't really know what to do other than look for this shapeshifter he told us to kill."Pog nods along with Ulla. "Super weird and confusing."
At Robwin's question, Pog nods and holds up his wand. "Yep, these bad boys are our arcane foci! They help us cast spells and stuff!"Ulla chimes in. "But, well, they're just normal wands. You're a wizard so you probably have a normal arcane focus as well." Pog suddenly stops in his tracks and lets out a shocked shout. "AH! Wizard. You're a wizard so you use magic a lot. We gotta let you know that if you use magic, it can go a bit wonky round here." Ulla nods."Oh right, forgot about that. Not a lot of people visit us so we don't usually have to tell anyone that."
This conversation occurs as they begin to lead you through the carved out halls of the caves. When you first enter through the small doors, the ceilings rise up a few feet, allowing for the taller of your group to walk easily. As soon as the doors close behind you, the crashing of the waterfall immediately dies down and you can hear everything much easier. Hanging off the ceilings are oil lanterns that are attached to some sort of rope-and-pulley mechanisms. You pass by a few corridors that lead deeper into the caves before arriving at an interesting room.
Bolted to the floor of this room is a platform equipped with four heavy crossbows. Mounted above the crossbows at a height of 6 feet is a chair equipped with various pedals and levers. Sitting in this chair is a female rock gnome, tinkering around with the crossbows. However, as you enter the room, Ulla and Pog stop in their tracks, eyes wide open. "Oh no." The rock gnome in the chair looks up at the group with a mad grin as Ulla and Pog begin to slowly back up. "Oh no! RUN AWAY! SHES CRAZY!"Ulla and Pog rush out of the room as a bolt flies across the room and over their heads, a cackling laughter filling the room. "YES! TEST SUBJECTS! STAY THERE! DON'T MOVE!" She begins to aim a crossbow at the group.
As Ulla and Pog run out of the room, they scream at the group. "That's Facktoré! She's insane but a genius as well!" They push themselves up against the wall. "Just shoot the crossbows! Don't hurt her!"
Peeking around the corner, they both cast Ray of Frostat one of the crossbows.
Pog's Ray of Frost - 6 Damage - 4 Ulla's Ray of Frost - 22 Damage - 4
Pog's ray goes wide but Ulla manages to hit the crossbow for 4 cold damage, ice beginning to form over it. Facktoré lets out a shout. "Hey! Don't do that!"
MAP (Due to how small the room is, I don't think it'll be necessary to have a map but I just wanted to show you what the area looked like so you had a better idea. Apologies for the long post. Ulla and Pog talk so much haha. Also a reminder that the green circle is the party token.)
“Wait, what?! My magic can ‘go a bit wonky’?!.... oh hells!... well we’ll see, I guess, won’t we!!...”.
Robwin attempts to cast fire bolt at the crossbow Ulla had already hit: Attack: 20 Damage: 4
(OOC: the spell also says ‘A flammable object hit by this spell ignites if it isn't being worn or carried‘. Don’t know if that applies here?)
If all goes to plan, Robwin will back up North and around the corner to the East (taking a glance down that new corridor) and maybe getting some cover while he pokes just his head back around to keep an eye on the crossbow situation.
Prosper ducks as the arrow flies across the room, darting forward a few steps before she registers that the gnome tinkerer was not an enemy. "She's a friend? Oh, very well, don't worry." She backs away from the mechanism as she takes out her shortbow and nocks an arrow, shooting at the crossbow-contraption
Tahnis fires an arrow at the crossbow contraption but it hits one of the metal parts and bounces off it harmlessly. Robwin manages to hit the crossbow with his Fire Bolt, causing parts of it to catch on fire. Prosper's arrow manages to strike a thin metal wire causing one of the crossbows to detach and crash onto the ground. Vimak goes close in and hacks a good sized dent into one of the crossbow. Adas manages to finish off the crossbow Vimak hit with a well placed arrow in one of its weak spots.
Facktoré screams in anger as the party begins to destroy her contraption. "NO! NO NO NO! STOP IT! YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT! YOU'RE TEST SUBJECTS! STAY STILL!!!!" She pulls a few levers and presses a few buttons, causing the contraption to rotate. One of the still working crossbows aim at Prosper before firing off a bolt.
Heavy Crossbow vs Prosper: 6 Damage: 9
The bolt barely misses her as it flies just pass her face, almost cutting her cheek. Facktoré screams again. "ARGH! SO CLOSE! NOTE TO SELF! WORK ON ACCURACY!!"
Ulla and Pog stick their heads out from the corner again, shooting off two more Rays of Frost.Ulla shouts at Facktoré."Facktoré! Stop shooting us! We're not test subjects for gods sakes!" Pog shouts as well. "Don't you remember what the kings said the last time you did this!?"
Pog's Ray of Frost - 9Damage - 3 Ulla's Ray of Frost - 8Damage - 8
Both rays manage to hit the contraption, exploding on impact but don't do much damage as they hit the metal parts. "ANOTHER NOTE TO SELF! MORE METAL!!!"
Robwin concentrates as Lia flies at the contraption with a screech! As she gets near by, her talons crackle with electrical sparks. She aims for some of the metal parts and attempts to administer a massive jolt of electricity, before returning to Robwin.
OOC: Not sure if I can do this, but I think with find familiar I can deliver a spell (with the range of touch) through my familiar. Robwin concentrates and casts shocking grasp as a ‘readied action’ (to discharge on Lia’s ‘reaction’ when she’s in range). Lia the owl will use half her movement to get to the machine, reacts/discharges the spell, then flies back using her skill ‘flyby’ so as not to provoke an attack of opportunity. Also, shocking grasp attacks with advantage ‘if the target is wearing armor made of metal’. Maybe that works here too?! Feel free to re-roll if I’ve made any mistakes anywhere here!! (it just seemed too cool not to attempt!).
Adas spreads out from his group so as to give as many targets as possible. He draws and looses an arrow at the crossbow to try and help disable it further.
Vimak lunges closer to the machine, seeking to grapple Facktore. He will try to grab the gnome and pull them from the controls, moving toward a corner of the room and blocking them into that corner.
Prosper nocks another arrow and aims at a separate crossbow this time, trying to aim the arrow so it hit the parts connecting the crossbow to the mechanism.
Attack: 25 Damage: 8
(ooc: not sure if Vimak would count as w/in five feet of the mechanism for the purposes of sneak attack damage, rolling a d6 here if it applies: 6
Tahnis lets loose another arrow and manages to embed it into the flight groove, effectively jamming the weapon. Robwin sends Lia out to the contraption and as she grabs hold of it with her claws, lightning shoots out from her body and envelopes the whole contraption cracking blue light. Adas attempts to take down the last remaining crossbow but his arrow grows wide, bouncing off the walls. Vimak attempts to grapple Facktoré and manages to succeed as she's too occupied with the rest of the group to jump out of the way in time. As Vimak and Facktoré struggle, Prosper's arrow finds the perfect weak point of the contraption, causing it to completely fall apart.
COMBAT END!
Facktoré lets out a scream. "NOOOOOOOO! MY BABY! YOU BROKE MY BABY! ARGHHH LET ME GOOO!!!!" Ulla and Pog come out from around the corner, shaking their heads and sighing. "Sorry about that. Facktoré is our resident genius. She makes all sorts of weapons to help protect our home!" Pog nods at Ulla's statement. "The problem is she's always also insane, always looking for something to test them on and well... yeah. Sorry bout that!"
Robwin glances around the room at all the arrows and bolts imbedded in the walls, and in the contraption itself, and pats himself down, not quite believing he managed to avoid getting hit, “everyone okay?” he calls, “anyone hit?!”...He pulls a crossbow bolt from the wall and puts it in his scroll case alongside the broken manticore spine...
And then to Pog and Ulla (as he snuffs out the last few flames on the machine with prestidigitation): “There’s nothing else like this on the way to the king is there? Sorry, Kings. Wait, kings? How many kings do you have??”.
He also looks over the machine to see if any part of it looks magical, or if it’s just mechanical... Arcana check: 11
"Well to be honest this one is quite lucky, I saw that going in a different direction but it seems that things have worked out," Adas says as he steps closer and attempts to retrieve his arrows.
He says to Fraktore, " Beware in the future, your attempts to experiment on others may yet lead you to yourself being experimented on in return." He waves a pointed arrow in the Gnomes direction.
