"Vicious! Go!" Eikis commands her badger, who with a mechanical whirl, leaps into the river and follows after the others, swimming as quickly as he can. Eikis scrambles towards the shoreline, trying to race after her friends as quickly as her legs will carry her. Calling upon her innate reserves of magic, she casts her Unseen Servant ahead on the shore, commanding it to plucks some of the underbrush and wave it like signal flags for those trapped in the river.
All noted Eikis! (you will need to give me a DC10 dex as noted in the ooc message I sent. basically just because the shore is flooded so your landing on difficult terrain.)
Ed, you do for a moment catch sight of the shore as you tumble along with the wave. It will give you advantage on the next DC check.
We are still waiting on Barmo for this round of action but if other folks want to roll their next check or take their next round of action that's OK. Should Barmo succeed on the check we can still pro-rate his next action depending on what he does. Make sense?
(This is pro-rating Barmo since he made the first check. He has a round of action while Eikis and Vicious are jumping off the wreck and the others are getting tossed around)
It seems that Barmo's bulk is paying off as he easily comes to the surface. With your head above water you see Vicious jump into the river headed in the direction of those that got swept away. You see Eikis do a long jump of the edge of the wreck and although she makes it to shore she lands poorly splaying out onto the flooded bank. For the most brief moment you see Ed's head pop above the water but disappear again. You can make out Esmee 16 feet away from you. She looks to be in pretty dire straits being violently tossed around about 5' under the surface.
Barmo it seems you have a choice to make. You can make it to shore this turn using your dash action, or you could try to help your companions in the water. If you try to help someone you will still have to make the DC checks as the water is still very turbulent and staying in it trying to swim is very difficult.
OK. So here's how this has gone down to the start of the third round.
Barmo manages to keep Esmee in sight as she tumbles through the river and grabs hold of her just as she's on the last of her air. Working together, and with the help of the unseen servant waving bushes around they manage to make it to shore in the third round. At the begging of the third round Ed is still tumbling down the river but Vicious has now reached him and is able to keep Ed more stable in the water dropping the DC to 8 for this round and giving Ed advantage on his roll. Eikis continues down the shore tracking the movement of her friends and is there when Barmo and Esmee come sputtering up onto shore.
So this puts everyone together in the third round with Ed needing to do a check and Eikis having an action.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Eikis will cast prestidigitation on Esmee, warming her clothing and trying to dry her she can recover from the shock of the water a bit.
For her bonus action, she will command Vicious to return to the shore with Ed, following behind him. Should Ed look like he's having trouble making it to the shore (he fails the DC8), Vicious is to grapple Ed and drag him to shore anyway!
(Only if it's needed, Vicious Grapple "Attack": 9)
Esmee sits huddled on the debris strewn shore, arms around her legs, shivering from the shock and the cold of nearly dying in the river. Her brain still hasn't caught up with the enormity of what just happened to her and her agemates. She stares blankly at Barmo, hardly believing the brusque halfling risked himself to save her.
When Eikis casts prestidigitation on her, Esmee is even more overwhelmed at their thoughtfulness. She never really felt like she fit in but now gratefulness to them makes tears leak from her eyes.
It seems that Vicious's help was just what Ed needed and he easily rights himself and they swim to shore together. Some of you have various cuts and bruises and everyone is in various stages of shock. You all realizing that any one of you could have drown where it not for the barest bit of luck. As you collect yourselves on shore you watch as the water recedes to it's normal level. Ship debris, bodies and body parts floating down river.
shaking and bruised Ed turn to Eikis and says: "I want to thank you and Vicious for the help. That was quite a ride we took. Why don't we return to the village and report the events we stumbled upon?"
"Ah! I'm so sorry, I was just trying to help! Please don't cry!" Eikis helps Esmee to her feet. "I feel bad rushing you and Barmo like this after that tumble down the river, but I really don't think we should be hanging around out here!" She quickly helps Ed out of the water and spends another few rounds of prestidigitation, trying to warm everyone up. And of course, taking a moment to give Vicious a good scratch behind his metal ears. "Whatever just fell over the waterfall was something everyone needs to know about for sure. What on earth's name is going on at Brassport? Is there war coming our way?"
As the party retreats, Eikis turns around one last time and tries to make some sense of the debris passing by in the river - does it look like the work of warfare, or smugglers, or some kind of attack from a rogue kingdom? Are the bodies soldiers, merchants, or civilians?
Investigation: 18
Vicious keeps a keen eye on the forest for any other unexpected surprises coming the beleaguered party's way: 13
(oops! can't put this in the right place without setting off the censors! Add to investigation roll: 3 guidance)
Eikis. The bodies and parts that are floating down river are a mix of races, ages and both sexes and all manor of occupations as far as you can tell. Much of the clothing and some of the corpses are badly burned but you see evidence of commoner clothing, merchant clothing and some in armor. You can't really see any obvious wounds. The debris is mostly wooden parts of the ship. What you don't see is any evidence of cargo.
Eikis has a sick feeling in her stomach as her mind races, assessing what she saw.
"Guys... I think something bad happened to Brassport. It didn't look like just soldiers floating down the river... I think there were commoners and merchants in there, too. What if all those people on the ship were trying to flee from something bad that happened at Brassport? Like refugees, except they didn't make it? ... Let's hurry... I think Hickorydale is in danger. Or if it isn't now, it might be soon!"
In Esmee's head she explains all about how it's not Eikis' fault and there's nothing to apologize for, but the other energetic halfling is already moving on, looking around the scene so all she manages is a wan smile in response.
She nods in emphatic agreement when both Ed and Eikis suggest they return swiftly to Hickorydale.
With some of you being a little more shook up than others it's agreed it's time to head back home. On your way back it's decided that the most logical thing to do would be to bring this information to the Elders in the council hill, although you're not sure anyone will be there at this hour. Your trip back is uneventful and to your surprise there are people already gathered at the council hill. Blobbin Weatherbow, the town elder and councilors Wilbur Stockroot, and Hilna Hayston. As you enter you overhear them discussing an arm that was found in one the fishing nets. Seeing you all enter they look a little confused "Yes, hello. What are you doing at the council hill this time of night? You all look awful, has something happened?"
Ed will say: "Elder's we do have some grave news to report. We went to go fishing this evening and stumbled onto something big. I will let my friends tell what we saw as they are better investigators than I."
