Rawley sees Mola being very attentive on something specific. He observes it as well and offers, "It is highly likely that it's not alive. Look at the height of that drop and the weird magic here - it's probably been reanimated either on purpose or by accident."
Rixton, annoyed that nobody is entranced by his theatrics, joins Rawleyand Molato see what the fuss is about. Upon spotting the moving figure, he looks at the other two men. "Really?" he mutters. "Good thing you have an experienced investigator to help you gather the clues to solve such a mystery."
He leans forward, hands cupped to his mouth, and yells, "HEY! GESTURE RUDELY AT THESE FINE GENTLEMEN WHENEVER YOU ARE READY FOR SOME HELP!"
Rixtonstraightens again, a self-satisfied look on his face and he gives Rawleyand Molaa single nod.
Rixtonsmirks and quietly climbs the stairs to the surface.
"We are not alone," he says dramatically as he appears. Then he notes what everyone is doing. "Don't trouble yourselves too much in my absence. Anyway, several levels down, someone is sneaking about. I did not go all the way to the bottom but I have the impression these ruins are somewhat deep, if not also expansive.
"I am of the opinion that this is our route, rather than scaling the cliff, though," he says, then gestures to the stairs. "Shall we?"
(In case anyone missed it. Rawley jumping is hilarious, though!)
Gwin squints in the direction that Mola and Rawley are looking and can see movement, but isn't clear on what it is. I fear my dwarf eyes aren't as keen as yours, my druid friend. What do you see??? (for the sake of moving things along, we'll assume Mola tells Gwin it appears to be someone wounded and crawling). Hmmm, I don't like this. It could be a trap. Or at the very least, some dark magic at work.
Upon hearing Rixton's outburst, Gwin shoots him a disapproving glare (which is becoming habitual at this point). Well, if they weren't aware of our presence before, they surely are now. And you wonder why we weren't all that troubled by your absence, she says with a half-hearted wink. But I WOULD prefer to take your route, Rixton. I'd feel far more at ease navigating through the dark passage ruins of the tower than being out in the open and exposed, but perhaps that's just the dwarf in me.

(Mola does indeed tell everyone what he thinks he sees!)
Mola studies Rixton in wonderment, and then looks back to Gwin and Rawley, closing his eyes and shaking his head with a sigh. He does look to see if the moving figure reacts at all.
"That poor soul might know something about what we're about to walk into, or that person you heard walking about down there, Rixton. Not to mention that if I was barely alive at the bottom of a canyon, I'd sure like it if four people came to help me rather than make fun of my predicament. Gwin, it might be a trap, I suppose. Pretty elaborate one, though. Maybe we'd be able to get to that poor soul more easily from the tunnel route. Rixton, your keen ears couldn't tell if the sneaky footsteps were regular feet, or cloven-hooved, could they?"
Rixtonshakes his head. "You give a lot of maybes but we should get our answer to most of them shortly. As for the footsteps, I am not certain but I do not think they were cloven."
(Seems like it's safe to advance the story. With a bit of a creepy, underground, we-may-never-get-out-of-this-alive vibe, no less. For Mola and Rawley, who lack darkvision, I'm assuming that Mola is using the produce flame cantrip to provide light for the two humans.)
Gwin,Mola, and Rawley gather their weapons and gear, preparing to follow Rixton down the lengthy stairwell beneath the ruins. Taking one last look at the four bodies lying on the canyon floor, they see no movement whatsoever. The one that has made a few movements has become still again.
As Rixton had just done a few minutes ago, the party descends first past the cellar and then past the sewer landing. Rixton indicates that the next landing to be reached is the place where he heard the distant footsteps. All four adventurers focus on being as quiet as possible as they continue down the stairwell...
...but Rawleymakes a misstep on the stairs. As he catches his balance, his backpack crashes into the wall, creating all manner of racket that echoes down the stairwell. The party freezes, straining their ears for well over a minute.

The sound of footsteps--faint and shuffling slightly--is heard by all. Rixton surmises the source of the footsteps is slightly closer to the stairwell this time...
(The party is on the stairwell, approximately 10' above the hallway landing)

Rixton steps onto the landing that connects the spiral stairs to the hallway. To the east, the hallway runs for approximately 30' before ending in a pile of rubble and debris that, for all intents and purposes, forms a dead end. To the west, the hallway runs in a straight line as far as his eyes can see in the darkness. He is somewhat certain that the hallway leads into some sort of open room approximately 60' ahead, right at the point where his darkvision ends.

Mola’s flame disappeared once the sounds got even a bit closer, leaving the poor guy relying on his hearing. He can’t believe he forgot to cast pass without trace before they started sneaking around, but that ship has already sailed. He pauses, trying not to make a sound. He’s ready to wildshape into something more suited to seeing in the dark should the need for combat arise. Can he tell what the shuffling gait is signifying?
Rixtonslaps his forehead as Molaproudly steps before whomever walks the passage. He adds loudly to Mola'sintroduction, "Do you have trouble with stairs, Mermi? It sounds like you have been stuck here for a long time. You must be very hungry."
Through gritted teeth, Rixtonadds in a hissed whisper, "Arm yourselves quickly! The help these ones desire will not be to your liking!"

Rawley jumps as Rixton starts yelling.. last he knew Rixton was deep under ground investigating some stairs and hallways..

Rawley mutters something in a fairly angry voice.
(The guy moving in the valley didn't respond to Rixton's antics?)
He did not.
(Sheesh. Everyone is ignoring Rixton these days.)
The rogue pulls his longsword and descends along the wall to the passage when he heard the sounds.
Rixton steps onto the landing that connects the spiral stairs to the hallway. Rixton takes cover out of view of anyone coming down the passage.
Rawley just stands still, knowing full well he's prone to make noise should he move.

Mola, now focused solely on the sounds within the darkness, narrows his guess to some sort of humanoid, possibly barefooted.
The sound of the footsteps is immediately replaced by a voice. "Mermi, did you hear that? Someone's come to help us."
A second voice, faint but filled with hope, replies, "So long we've waited. Oh so long."
"Yes, Mermi. So dark for so long. Hullo there! Please! We are here!" calls out the first voice.
“Mermi and Mermi’s friend, what’s been keeping you? Stairs are right here.”
Mola steps forward slowly, arms outstretched wide, in welcome, still blind as a bat. He’s looking for any light and listening for other beings.
Rixton slaps his forehead as Mola proudly steps before whomever walks the passage. He adds loudly to Mola's introduction, "Do you have trouble with stairs, Mermi? It sounds like you have been stuck here for a long time. You must be very hungry."
Through gritted teeth, Rixton adds in a hissed whisper, "Arm yourselves quickly! The help these ones desire will not be to your liking!"
