OOC: When we first started this, Miguel raised the possibility of using Zoom for a playing session. Now that I've been getting experience with Zoom, since my department uses it for a whole string of meetings, tell me if you'd like to schedule a Zoom session and when. I'd prefer to use it for a battle where we got minis, btw.
You'll be getting into Phandalin before noon. The town is fairly well-known in this region, and you've heard the following:
Nestled in the rocky foothills of the snow-capped Sword Mountains is the mining town of Phandalin, which consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings. Crumbling stone ruins surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past.
Phandalin's residents are quiet, hard-working folk who came from distant cities to eke out a life amid the harsh wilderness. They are farmers, stonecutters, blacksmiths, traders, prospectors, and children. The town has no walls and no garrison, but most of the adults keep weapons within easy reach in case the need for arms should arise.
Visitors are welcome here, particularly if they have coin to spend or news to share. The Stonehill Inn at the center of town offers modest lodgings and meals. A couple of doors down from the inn, posted outside the townmaster's hall, is a job board for adventurers.
"The place is called Gnome-N-garde," the innkeeper corrects Rastaris. "When you arrive at Phandalin, ask the Townmaster, Harbin Wester, for directions."
Since Lathalas is going to the general store, Rastaris gives him 10 GP.
"I don't know how much we can raise, but we'll probably need a climbing kit for our descent. Could you also get me 20 pitons and additional 50 feet of hempen rope.
OOC: Can you try to sell the remaining items we got from the cellar.
Rastaris waits until Farnakees reads the note.
"I'll try to find Townmaster Wester. Shall we meet back here in an hour?"
To the DM: Rastaris will begin asking where the Townmaster holds office and the direction there.
I'm open to Zoom but I don't know if it's a good way to play D&D especially if you want to use battle maps and miniatures. I suppose you could point your camera at the map and minis. Does someone have a Zoom account that doesn't have the 40-minute limit?
I've used Roll20 in the past and it provides a lot of the things we might want: dice, maps, drag-and-drop objects, move your own tokens, audio and video conferencing. There is a bit of a learning curve; we don't have to go all out on it so we can keep that learning curve down.
The other thing is ... can we all commit to some specific play times if we're going to Zoom/Roll20 it?
OOC: Didn't Zoom remove the time limit during this period of stay at home orders?
OOC: If we do Zoom, how do we roll dice (outside that as Roll20). There is a Dice App on on DndBeyond (connected to Discord) but think it may require actual membership - Hero Level on DnDBeyond.
OOC - I'll look up Roll 20. Like I said, though, the face-to-face will probably be just for a short time period when everyone is free.
The job board is next to the townmaster's hall. It is a two-storey building with sturdy stone walls, a pitched wooden roof, and a bell tower in the back.
Six guards in green livery lounge lazily around the hall.
Lathalas goes to Barthen's Provisions. There are two young men standing behind the counter. Upon being asked by the elf, they say they can provide the climber's kit for 30 gp, but they are not interested in any of the items Lathalas is trying to sell.
"No barter or trade here, master elf. It's coin only in exchange for goods here at Barthen's. Would you like anything else."
Farnakees tells Rastaris, "Why not let's drop by the store together with the rest of the group. We'll appear more capable that way. If this the townmaster can't get these fine goons to make his special delivery, our services will be a bargaining chip. Besides, Lathalas can't carry all these kettles by himself."
Farnakees goes to the store as well. He asks if they will buy his scimitar, and he'll get a good longsword from them if it's within 10 Gold. If they purchase his scimitar, he can pay 15 gold for a good longsword.

OOC: Tell me where you want to go or what you're looking for in Phandalin, and I'll tell you what you find.
OOC:You're entering the town from the west, by way of the Miner's Trail.
OOC - Yes, you have instructions on who to look for in Phandalin. Check the early posts.
No mention of a person. Just that we were expected to get directions to Gnomengarde when we reached Phandalin.
OOC: Correct: "Bring the case and its contents to the gnomes of Gnomegarde, but you were told to stop at Phandalin first in order to get directions."
Lathalas asks where he might find 1) Gnomegarde and 2) a general store.
Farnakees goes up to the job board and checks it out.
OOC: What's on the board?
"The place is called Gnome-N-garde," the innkeeper corrects Rastaris. "When you arrive at Phandalin, ask the Townmaster, Harbin Wester, for directions."
Maybe some of the party remembered this ...
Some of the townsfolk have heard of Gnomengarde, but they say that only the townmaster has had any dealing with the gnomes.
"You can ask him, but you won't see him," the townsfolk tell Lathalas, laughing.
They also direct him to Barthen's Provsions if the elf wants supplies.
Farnakees sees there is only one notice on the job board.
"Special delivery needed. Go to the townmaster for details," it says.
"Hmmm... Townmaster Harbin, who knows the way to Garden Gnome?" Farnakees wonders...
Farnakees calls over to his comrades within earshot and asks them to check out the board.
Since Lathalas is going to the general store, Rastaris gives him 10 GP.
