Anakis pouts as she thinks, ultimately wanting most of it, but knowing that's unlikely. "We each have bags full of coin, right? As long as each bag feels about the same, we could just do it that way," she shrugs as she looks to the others.
The halflings look into their sacks filled nearly to capacity with gold and silver colored coins and nod to Remacle. "Well, it's a very generous offer," he says, "and I assure you that the families of those who didn't make it back will get their shares as well, but I'm not sure if I'm understanding your proposal correctly. Are you suggesting we redistribute the coin so we're each carrying about the same? That would work just as well, I suppose."
The halflings' sacks are clearly heavier than what the party is carrying and Remacle seems genuinely unsure of what your suggestion is.
“Although I do think perhaps we should divide it among everyone including those that didn’t make it so they can take their shares to their family,” Aluzira adds.
"But we all have someone take care of." Anakis scratches her head for a bit, pacing as she thinks. She then stops and looks across to the halflings, "What about this Mr. Buttons? We hold onto this," she holds up the hilt key, "And we'll leave you with extra for your friends and families?" The tiefling girl leans closer to Aluzira and whispers, "I'm sure there's plenty more down there."
"I think we have a deal," says Remacle, as the other halflings nod their approval. "You can hang on to my heirloom for a bit. I don't think we'll be going on any more adventures for the time being."
"Of course, I'll be keeping your granddad's lucky hammer!" he says to Nicolas. "A deal's a deal, after all!"
After distributing a pound or so of the coins from the halflings' sacks among the party members that were carrying less than their share, and after Ash doles out about five pounds and Tarek about ten pounds of coin, each of the six party members carries 14 pounds, while each of the six halflings carries a sack weighing twice that much, bearing the shares of their six fallen comrades.
You each find the extra weight encumbering but manageable. A small item in your backpack (a tinderbox or your mess kit) needs to be moved onto your belt, Anakis, to keep your pack from failing under the extra weight. Nicolas and Torrent take several torches and a day of rations out of their luggage to make room, but Tarek has some extra capacity to carry their items out for them.
Once everyone's situated, the halflings say their farewells and sneak through the shadows along the wall of the tunnel down to the edge of the river and help each other with their heavy sacks as they begin to drop down through a gap to follow a narrow strip of dry ground along the edge of the drainage canal towards the grate that leads out of the city and into the surrounding country.
"This is the way we came in, and we're headed out this way too," says Remacle. "We don't want to tangle with your council, and keeping stealthy has always helped us to keep our noses out of trouble. I'm glad we ran into you. You're a good bunch, for big folk. If you're ever in the Northpids Territory, look me up. The Buttons of Tillydrone are well known in those parts. I'm sure someone'll point you in the right direction. Farewell!"
Aluzira nods slightly in response to Anakis’ whisper then after everything has been sorted wishes that halflings a fond farewell as they leave. “I wish you all the best of luck! Thank you for your companionship on this adventure!”
"Bye Mr. Buttons," Anakis waves and watches as the halflings make their exit. Then she turns to the others, "So, should we go find somewhere for all this money?"
"Er, what did you have in mind?" asks Tarek. "I'm planning on taking my share to the temple and dedicating a new wing to the Shrine of Byron Strongheart."
“I’ll probably look for another dagger and an instrument of some sort,” Aluzira says, “but first I’m going to sort all these coins out,” she adds with a nervous laugh.
"Oh, you mean that kind of somewhere," says Tarek, giggling. "Well, in that case, we should get back up to the city, so you can spend some of your money."
On the shadowy far bank of the river, you can see the boatmen spot your party's torchlight and begin punting across to ferry you back to the city. Indirect afternoon light streams down the stairway to the right, which seems very bright after spending hours in the subterranean darkness, although the day is still gloomy and overcast.
Arriving on the far bank, your party members inform you of their plans. Tarek, as he said, is going to the temple. He hopes that the wealth he brings will gain him the favor he needs to achieve his goal of finally joining the priesthood.
Torrent states he has business out in the bog. "There's matters a brewin' out there what needs attendin'," he says, "and now that you're all aware o' the bog-folk, you might as well know that I was taught druid-craft by some o' their wise men. I've a mind to go and see them for a bit and discuss a few matters wi' 'em, like what's goin' on in these parts."
Nicolas and Acheron (or Ash, as you know him) say they will report back to the council to fulfill the conditions of their employment but that they won't say a word about having met Remacle and his crew, or the man, Yundur, in the undercity.
You're both free to do as you wish, either within the city or in the surrounding country.
You each gain 169 XP for the day's adventure, but before you can advance in level, you must spend some downtime in training: 6 days, if you can find someone who can provide you with the training you need, or 12 days, if you train yourself without a tutor. Additionally, because of the expensive materials required for study and experimentation, the training will cost 150 gp per day which includes your living expenses.
Also, when you are each in a place where you can count your coins, you find that you have each gained 466 electrum pieces and 233 silver pieces.
Anakis quickly finds somewhere to purchase some Thieves' Tools, and then not knowing where to go for training (especially as her patron gave her powers, rather than a school originally, and not having the money to pay for several days of training), she wanders the city for a bit, practicing her skills in the alleys while she plays with the other street kids. Each night, returning to their lodgings to tell Aluzira and the others (whoever remains with us) about what she learnt throughout the day. Each encounter with the street kids, she would give them 10sp or 2ep so they could get some food and drink for the next little while.
Aluzira will make her way to the nearest marketplace looking for a blacksmith or someone who is selling weapons. She had been doing a lot more fighting than she had expected and wanted to be better prepared this time. After that she will look for an instrument hoping to find a pan flute like the one she’d had, or maybe even a drum. Once she finds those things she’ll make her way to where they’ve been lodged. At night she’d listen to Anakis stories with great interest and spend her days in the Magenta Angel hoping to earn a few more coins. One night when listening to Anakis she perks up and asks a little nervously , “Would the kids perhaps like to hear me play something? Or could I play for them? I mean.” Before muttering to herself, “That’s technically the same thing isn’t it..?” with a face palm.
"Well, perhaps," Anakis says as she taps her lip with a finger, "But the hardest part will be getting them all in one place." She laughs, then stops to think over Aluzira's comment. "I don't know, are they the same?" She shrugs and smiles.
A good set of thieves' tools, Anakis, can be procured in Lower South Seast, the "thieves' ward", an area run by the city's thieves' guild. It costs you the regular price of 25 gp.
When you play with the other street kids, they tell you that a newcomer to the city, someone called Lord Yundur, has started up a home for street kids and that some of their friends have gone to stay there where, it is said, they are very well fed. Some of those you speak with are thinking about going to stay there too. They also remark on the old-time coins you give them, especially the electrum pieces which are made from a metal they've never seen before.
Weapons are for sale most abundantly, Aluzira, in Rub District where the Smiths' Guild presides. Musical instruments can be found for sale in the marketplace in Wuft Hill where you can find a pan flute for 12 gp and/or a drum for 6 gp.
Horace welcomes you back to the Magenta Angels where, performing on a daily basis, you earn enough to buy food for you and Anakis and keep you both in modest accommodations. Of course, any day you spend working doesn't count towards taking a long rest in order to regain spent spell slots which must be a period of seven days uninterrupted.
How many days do the two of you wish to spend on these activities, and what do you do next?
"I've met Mr. Yundur," Anakis says matter-of-factly to the other children, "He was a strange man. But I'm glad he looks after you."
The rest of the time, when she's not with Aluzira, Anakis spends her time talking to the Lord of Shadows, asking for his help in figuring out her powers and practising what she knows. (Spending the time practicing towards her level up.)
While in Rub District she will look for a new dagger and a quarterstaff, then make her way to Wuft Hill and get the pan flute. “Good greif,” she mutters to herself “I keep thinking of things I’ll need,” While in Wuft Hill she will also ask where she can find a Healers Kit and a journal. She will spend the first day working at the Magenta Angels but remembers she can’t use her spells unless she’s completely rested so spends the next 7 days doing so, covering the food and lodging with what’s left of the coins.
(she’s also looking for a healers kit, I’m not sure what the tool tip for it is lol.)
Anakis pouts as she thinks, ultimately wanting most of it, but knowing that's unlikely. "We each have bags full of coin, right? As long as each bag feels about the same, we could just do it that way," she shrugs as she looks to the others.
“That sounds fair,” Aluzira says with a nod, “and trying to count all of it would take a while,” she adds with a chuckle.
Anakis nods, "That was what I was thinking. If we're all carrying about the same weight in our coin bags, we all can say that it's fair for all."
Buttons?
